Harmonic and intermodulation generation in quantum-well diodes

A Fourier-series model describing the current-voltage characteristic of a quantum-well diode (QWD) is presented. Using this model, closed-form expressions are obtained for the harmonic and intermodulation performance of a QWD excited by a multisinusoidal voltage superimposed on a dc voltage.     

Differential oscillator strengths and dipole polarizabilities for transitions of the helium sequence

The dipole radial integral for an initial discrete 1s state and a final continuum state has been calculated under the screened hydrogenic model. In this model, single-electron hydrogenic wave functions are employed and the initial and the final states are treated by two different effective-charge parameters. Numerical values of differential oscillator strengths for transitions from 1s 21S to the continuum for the helium sequence ions are obtained. Also calculated are the dipole polarizabilities, which are found to be in excellent agreement with the results of other authors.     

1‐Acetyl‐3′‐(4‐bromophenyl)‐3′‐chlorospiro[3H‐indole‐3,2′‐oxetan]‐2(1H)‐one

In the title compound, C₁₈H₁₃BrClNO₃, the heterocyclic ring of the indole is distorted from planarity towards an envelope conformation. The orientations of the indole, oxetane, chloro and bromo­phenyl substituents are conditioned by the sp³ states of the spiro‐junction and the Cl‐attached C atoms.     

Natural and fallout radionuclide concentrations in the environment of Islamabad

A study on the concentration of natural and fallout radionuclides in environmental samples collected from different localities of Islamabad was performed. For the determination of gamma-emitters such as ²³⁸U, ²³²Th, ⁴⁰K and ¹³⁷Cs high purity germanium (HPGe) detector was used while for the analysis of ⁹⁰Sr, a beta-emitter, liquid scintillation counting system was used. The indoor absorbed dose rate was measured by a CaF₂ : Dy thermoluminescence detector. Other radiation parameters were also determined to evaluate the radiation hazard. All the results were well within the permissible limits showing that there is no radiation hazard in the environment of Islamabad.     

Two New and a Known Compound from Lawsonia inermis

A new obtusafuran derivative, lawsonicin ( 1 ), and a new naphthaquinone, lawsonadeem ( 2 ), along with a known constituent, vomifoliol ( 3 ), were isolated from the aerial parts of Lawsonia alba and characterized by chemical transformation and spectroscopic experiments, including 2D‐NMR techniques.     

Terpenoids of the essential oil ofLedum hypoleucum

The chemical composition of the terpenoids of the essential oil ofLedum hypoleucum growing in the Far East has been studied. It differs fromL. palustre by a larger amount of compounds of the bisabolane series in the essential oil. Among the monoterpenoids, p-cymene, -phellandrene, and ascaridole predominate. The main components of the sesquiterpenoids are ar-curcumene and ar-turmerone, now found for the first time inLedum essential oils.Tomsk State Medical Institute. Organic–inorganic nanocomposites prepared from fluoro-aramid and silica

Fluoro-aramid-based sol/gel-derived nanocomposites were synthesized by condensing a mixture of 4,4′-(hexafluoro-isopropylidene)dianiline and 1,3-phenylenediamine with terephthaloylchloride (TPC) in dimethylacetamide. TPC was added in slight excess to produce amide chains with carbonyl chloride end groups and then replaced with alkoxy groups using aminophenyltrimethoxysilane to develop bonding with the silica network. Mechanical, dynamic mechanical thermal, water absorption and morphological measurements were carried out on the thin hybrid films. Increase in the tensile strength and modulus was observed as compared to pristine polyamide. The thermal decomposition temperature was found in the range of 400–500 °C. The water absorption was found to be reduced with higher silica content. The glass transition temperature and the storage moduli increased with increasing silica concentration. The maximum increase in the T _g value (345 °C) was observed with 20 wt% silica. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the uniform distribution of silica in the matrix with an average particle size ranging from 8 to 50 nm.     

Negative ion FAB mass spectroscopy of some ribose alkylated 5'-UMP derivatives

Characteristic fragment ions obtained in Fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectroscopy of ribose alkylated Uridine 5'-monophosphate (5'-UMP) derivatives in negative ion mode are described. All the compounds examined exhibited either [M]- or quasimolecular ion [M - H]- the fragmentations can be used to characterize these nucleotides.     

Aqueous phenylacetic acid as a low-dose fluorescence dosimeter

Total fluorescence of aqueous phenylacetic acid system at neutral pH has been evaluated as low-dose -ray chemical dosimeter, using the fluorescence accessory of a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The useful working range of the system is from 4 to 70 Gy. The postirradiation stability of the dosimeter response has been studied at different pH's, storage temperatures and light conditions. The post-irradiation stability of the dosimeter decreases with an increase in storage temperature. The stability is not affected in diffuse sunlight but it is very unstable in direct sunlight.     

Uptake of Tm(III) ions onto polyurethane foam from H2O - ethanol mixture containing 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN)

Summary The sorption of microquantities of Tm(III) ions on washed polyurethane foam (PUF) from a mixture of aqueous solution and ethanol containing PAN was examined. The maximum sorption of 3.18^. 10^-6M solution of Tm(III) ions was observed at pH 8 with 30-minute equilibration time. The optimum ratio of aqueous-ethanol phase for the sorption of Tm(III) ions was found to be 3:1 v/v, respectively. The sorption rate of metal ions on PUF is followed a first order kinetics and obeyed the equation for an intra particle diffusion process. The equilibrium concentration data of Tm(III) ions could be described satisfactorily by several adsorption isotherms. The Freundlich adsorption isotherm constants 1/nand K_Fare 0.66±0.02 and (5.7±0.3)^. 10^-3mol^. g^-1, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm constants for monolayer coverage (Q) and binding strength of sorption (b) are (2.5±0.7)^. 10^-5mol^. g^-1and (1.6±0.1)^. 10⁴l^. mol^-1, respectively. The sorption capacity derived from Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm is (1.7±0.2)^. 10^-4mol^. g^-1and the sorption free energy (E) is 9.8±0.2 kJ^. mol^-1indicating chemisorption phenomena. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the sorption of Tm(III) ions onto PUF is endothermic, entropy driven and spontaneous in nature.
