Magnetic moments of proton drip-line nuclei13O and9C

The magnetic moments of the proton drip-line nuclei¹³O(I = 3/2^–,T _1/2 = 8.6 ms) and 9C(I = 3/2^–,T _1/2 = 126 ms) have been determined for the first time through the combined techniques of polarized radioactive nuclear beams and-NMR detection. The observed magnetic moments are ¦(¹³O)¦ = 1.3891 ±0.0003 _N and ¦(⁹C)¦ = 1.3914 ±0.0005 _N. Spin expectation values are deduced to be 0.76 and 1.44 for¹³O and⁹C, respectively. While the of¹³O is consistent with the systematics from isospinT= 1/2 mirror pairs, the of⁹C is unusually large, even far larger than the single particle value, = 1.     

High-power CO(2) laser with a Gauss-core resonator for high-speed cutting of thin metal sheets

A novel resonator, the Gauss-core resonator, based on a stable resonator configuration designed to yield a highly focusing beam operating in a large-volume TEM(00) mode, is presented. A 6.2 kW linearly polarized output beam with an M(2) factor of 1.7 is obtained experimentally for a high-power cw CO(2) laser. The capability of the Gauss-core resonator to process laser materials is also studied. We can cut 1-mm-thick mild (soft) steel with a maximum cutting speed of 58 m/min at 5.6 kW and 0.2-mm-thick steel 145 m/min at 2.8 kW.     

Accurate frequency control of a mode-locked laser diode by reference-light injection

Injection locking is employed to narrow the spectrum linewidth of individual modes of an active mode-locked laser diode (ML-LD). The multiple modes of the injection-locked ML-LD lie over 3.0 THz with 25-GHz spacing at 30 dB down; their linewidth and stability, ~25 MHz, are nearly the same as those of the master laser. We also demonstrate the accurate frequency measurement of laser diodes stabilized to molecular (H(13)C (15)N ,(13)C(2)H (2)) absorption lines by use of the injection-locked ML-LD.
