One-pot synthesis of 3-arylaminomaleimides from terminal alkynes and isocyanates

The reaction of aryl acetylide anions with phenyl isocyanate and subsequent addition of a protonating agent such as ethanol affords good yields of 3-aminomaleimides, formed by the cyclization of one molecule of alkyne with two isocyanates. When the reaction is quenched with water instead, cyclopentadienone imines are formed as the major products.     

On the theory of the Buckingham effect

We apply general arguments (based on spatial transformation properties, intrinsic symmetry and dimensional analysis) to the theory of the Buckingham effect (electric-field–gradient-induced birefringence in a gas). These yield, in a simple manner, the temperature-dependent and temperature-independent terms in the birefringence (each to within a numerical factor), and also the expression, derived by Buckingham and Longuet-Higgins, for the effective quadrupole centre of a molecule. We show in addition how the calculation of the two numerical factors can be simplified in our approach.     

Gold-surface binding of molecular switches studied by M?ssbauer spectroscopy

The nonanuclear coordination compound [Mo^IV{(CN)Fe^III(3-methyl-saldptn)}₈]Cl₄ exhibits multiple spin transitions (3-methyl-saldptn = N,N′-bis(3′′-methyl-2′′-hydroxy-benzyliden)-1,7-diamino-4-azaheptane). This spin crossover cluster is bound via a self-assembled monolayer onto a two dimensional array gold surface. M?ssbauer spectroscopy indicates that the thermally and optically induced spin crossover of the compound is maintained. Thereby, the foundation for its potential practical application (e.g. in the field of information storage) was laid.
