Metal-directed synthesis and photophysical studies of trinuclear v-shaped and pentanuclear x-shaped ruthenium and osmium metallorods and metallostars based upon 4'-(3,5-dihydroxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine divergent units

A new series of V-shaped trinuclear metallorods and X-shaped pentanuclear metallostars has been prepared by the reaction of metal complexes bearing pendant phenolic functionalities with complexes containing electrophilic ligands. Specifically, {M(tpy)2} motifs (M=Ru or Os; tpy=2,2':6',2'-terpyridine) bearing one or two pendant 3,5-dihydroxyphenyl substituents at the 4-position of the central ring of the tpy have been reacted with the complexes [Ru(tpy)(Xtpy)]2+ (X=Cl or Br) to form new ether-linked species. The energy transfer from ruthenium to osmium in these complexes has been investigated in detail and the efficiency of transfer shown to be highly temperature dependent; the energy transfer is highly efficient at low temperature, whereas at room temperature nonradiative and nontransfer deactivation of the excited {Ru(tpy)2}* domains is most significant.     

On the estimation of the reaction mechanisms of thermal decomposition of solids from the fraction reacted at the maximum reaction rate

A procedure is developed for determining equilibrium constants of reactions of the type: A (solid) ? B (solid) + C (gas) from TG data. The method is based upon the overlapping of both formation and decomposition TG diagrams when an appropriate heating rate is applied.     

Effect of the roughness factor on the surface oxidation of ruthenium catalysts

The surface oxidation of ruthenium catalysts with different roughness factor values has been analyzed. It is shown that electro formation of oxidized species on the exposed surface of ruthenium is strongly affected by the rougher characteristics of the surface. This effect has been explained through the addition and removal of protons to and from the oxidized species.

Molybdenum amido complexes with single Mo-N bonds: synthesis,structure, and reactivity

Reactions of the complex [MoCl(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)(CO)(2)(phen)] (1) (phen=1,10-phenanthroline) with potassium arylamides were used to synthesize the amido complexes [Mo(N(R)Ar)(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)(CO)(2)(phen)] (R=H, Ar=Ph, 2 a; R=H, Ar=p-tolyl, 2 b; R=Me, Ar=Ph; 2 c). For 2 b the Mo-N(amido) bond length (2.105(4) A) is consistent with it being a single bond, with which the metal attains an 18-electron configuration. The reaction of 2 b with HOTf affords the amino complex [Mo(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)(NH(2)(p-tol))(CO)(2)(phen)]OTf (3-OTf). Treatment of 3-OTf with nBuLi or KN(SiMe(3))(2) regenerates 2 b. The new amido complexes react with CS(2), arylisothiocyanates and maleic anhydride. A single product corresponding to the formal insertion of the electrophile into the Mo-N(amido) bond is obtained in each case. For maleic anhydride, ring opening accompanied the formation of the insertion product. The reaction of 2 b with maleimide affords [Mo(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)[NC(O)CH=CHC(O)](CO)(2)(phen)] (7), which results from simple acid-base metathesis. The reaction of 2 b with (p-tol)NCO affords [[Mo(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)(CO)(2)(phen)](2)(eta(2)-MoO(4))] (8), which corresponds to oxidation of one third of the metal atoms to Mo(VI). Complex 8 was also obtained in the reactions of 2 b with CO(2) or the lactide 3,6-dimethyl-1,4-dioxane-2,5-dione. The structures of the compounds 2 b, 3-OTf, [Mo(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)[SC(S)(N(H)Ph)](CO)(2)(phen)] (4), [Mo(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)[SC(N(p-tol))(NH(p-tol))](CO)(2)(phen)] (5 a), and [Mo(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)[OC(O)CH=CHC(O)(NH(p-tol))](CO)(2)(phen)] (6), 7, and 8 (both the free complex and its N,N'-di(p-tolyl)urea adduct) were determined by X-ray diffraction.     

Synthesis of new 6-substituted purinyl-5′-nor-1′-homocarbanucleosides based on indanol

A series of new 6-substituted purinyl-5′-nor-1′-homocarbanucleosides based on indanol were synthesized from (±)-cis-3-hydroxymethyl-1-indanol, an appropriately functionalized derivative of which was reacted with 6-chloropurine in the presence of NaH and 18-crown-6 ether to prepare a key intermediate that gave access to the target molecules, purinylcarbanucleosides in which position 6 is occupied by a chloro, hydroxy, methoxy, amino or substituted phenyl group.     

Closed‐form rectangular atomic wave functions of an N‐dimensional atom

A closed‐form expression has been derived to obtain the N‐dimensional rectangular atomic wave functions. The wave functions can be obtained straightforwardly with the knowledge of the angular momentum quantum numbers and the dimension and there is no need to employ recursive methods as in previous works. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
