Within an auditory channel, the speech waveform contains both temporal envelope (E(O)) and temporal fine structure (TFS) information. Vocoder processing extracts a modified version of the temporal envelope (E') within each channel and uses it to modulate a channel carrier. The resulting signal, E'(Carr), has reduced information content compared to the original "E(O)?+ TFS" signal. The dynamic range over which listeners make additional use of E(O)?+ TFS over E'(Carr) cues was investigated in a competing-speech task. The target-and-background mixture was processed using a 30-channel vocoder. In each channel, E(O)?+ TFS replaced E'(Carr) at either the peaks or the valleys of the signal. The replacement decision was based on comparing the short-term channel level to a parametrically varied "switching threshold," expressed relative to the long-term channel level. Intelligibility was measured as a function of switching threshold, carrier type, target-to-background ratio, and replacement method. Scores showed a dependence on all four parameters. Derived intensity-importance functions (IIFs) showed that E(O)?+ TFS information from 8-13 dB below to 10 dB above the channel long-term level was important. When E(O)?+ TFS information was added at the peaks, IIFs peaked around -2 dB, but when E(O)?+ TFS information was added at the valleys, the peaks lay around +1 dB.  相似文献

Psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) were measured for sinusoidal signals with frequency f(s)?= 31.5, 40, 50, 63, and 80 Hz, using sinusoidal and narrowband-noise maskers. For the former, conditions were included where a pair of beating tones was added to reduce the use of cues related to beats. Estimates of each subject's middle-ear transfer function (METF) were obtained from equal-loudness contours measured from 20 to 160 Hz. With decreasing f(s), the PTCs became progressively broadened and markedly asymmetrical, with shallow upper skirts and steep lower skirts. For the sinusoidal maskers, the tips were more irregular than for narrowband-noise maskers or when beating tones were added. For f(s)?= 31.5 and 40 Hz, the tips of the PTCs always fell above f(s). Allowing for the METF so as to infer underlying filter shapes resulted in flatter lower skirts, especially below 40 Hz, and reduced the frequency at the tips for f(s) between 31.5 and 50 Hz; however, the tips did not fall below 40 to 50 Hz. The bandwidths of the PTCs increased with decreasing f(s) below 80 Hz. However, bandwidths remained roughly constant if the METF was included as part of auditory filtering for frequencies below 40 Hz.  相似文献

Spectrally shaped steady noise is commonly used as a masker of speech. The effects of inherent random fluctuations in amplitude of such a noise are typically ignored. Here, the importance of these random fluctuations was assessed by comparing two cases. For one, speech was mixed with steady speech-shaped noise and N-channel tone vocoded, a process referred to as signal-domain mixing (SDM); this preserved the random fluctuations of the noise. For the second, the envelope of speech alone was extracted for each vocoder channel and a constant was added corresponding to the root-mean-square value of the noise envelope for that channel. This is referred to as envelope-domain mixing (EDM); it removed the random fluctuations of the noise. Sinusoidally modulated noise and a single talker were also used as backgrounds, with both SDM and EDM. Speech intelligibility was measured for N?=?12, 19, and 30, with the target-to-background ratio fixed at -7 dB. For SDM, performance was best for the speech background and worst for the steady noise. For EDM, this pattern was reversed. Intelligibility with steady noise was consistently very poor for SDM, but near-ceiling for EDM, demonstrating that the random fluctuations in steady noise have a large effect.  相似文献

The spectral emittance of deposits left by bituminous and sub-bituminous coals under oxidizing conditions have been measured in situ. Pulverized coal is injected into a down-fired entrained-flow reactor. Ash accumulates on a probe in the reactor effluent and radiation emitted by the ash layer is recorded using a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. Values for the spectral emissive power emitted by the ash and the surface temperature of the ash are extracted from these data. These results are then used to calculate the spectral emittance of the deposit. The spectral emittances of ash deposits formed by burning Illinois #6 (bituminous) coal and Powder River Basin (sub-bituminous) coal were measured between 3000 and 500 wavenumbers. The spectral emittance of the deposit left by the bituminous coal has a constant value of approximately 0.46 between 3000 and 2400 wavenumbers. Between 2200 and 1200 wavenumbers, the spectral emittance of the deposit increases from approximately 0.47 to approximately 0.61. Between 1200 and 500 wavenumbers, the spectral emittance is relatively constant at 0.61. The spectral emittance of the deposit left by the sub-bituminous coal is also relatively constant between 3000 and 2400 wavenumbers at a value of 0.29. Between 2200 and 500 wavenumbers, the spectral emittance of deposits from the sub-bituminous coal increases from approximately 0.29 to 0.55. Differences between these spectral emittance measurements and those measured ex situ illustrate the importance of making in situ measurements. Band emittances were calculated using the measured spectral emittances, and band emittances of the deposits are reported as functions of temperature.  相似文献

We propose a mechanism for optical trapping of dark excitons by linearly polarized unabsorbed standing waves, with a potential depth of the order of a few meV. Since this trapping, based on carrier exchanges with virtual excitons coupled to unabsorbed photons, equally acts on bright and dark states, Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons--which occurs in dark states--must appear as dark spots in a cloud of bright excitons, at the trap potential minima, when the temperature decreases.  相似文献

We present an asymptotically exact analysis of the problem of detecting communities in sparse random networks generated by stochastic block models. Using the cavity method of statistical physics and its relationship to belief propagation, we unveil a phase transition from a regime where we can infer the correct group assignments of the nodes to one where these groups are undetectable. Our approach yields an optimal inference algorithm for detecting modules, including both assortative and disassortative functional modules, assessing their significance, and learning the parameters of the underlying block model. Our algorithm is scalable and applicable to real-world networks, as long as they are well described by the block model.  相似文献

The cerium γ?α transition was investigated using high-pressure, high-temperature angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on both poly- and single-crystalline samples, explicitly addressing symmetry change and transformation paths. The isomorphic hypothesis of the transition is confirmed, with a transition line ending at a solid-solid critical point. The critical exponent is determined, showing a universal behavior that can be pictured as a liquid-gas transition. We further report an isomorphic transition between two single crystals (with more than 14% of volume difference), an unparalleled observation in solid-state matter interpreted in terms of dislocation-induced diffusionless first-order phase transformation.  相似文献

We demonstrate that soliton perturbation theory, though widely used, predicts an incorrect phase distribution for solitons of stochastically driven nonlinear Schr?dinger equations in physically relevant parameter regimes. We consider the initial‐value problem for the regularized Boussinesq‐type equation in the class of periodic functions. Validity of the weakly nonlinear solution, given in terms of two counterpropagating waves satisfying the uncoupled Ostrovsky equations, is examined. We prove analytically and illustrate numerically that the improved accuracy of the solution can be achieved at the timescales of the Ostrovsky equation if solutions of the linearized Ostrovsky equations are incorporated into the asymptotic solution. Compared to the previous literature, we show that the approximation error can be controlled in the energy space of periodic functions and the nonzero mean values of the periodic functions can be naturally incorporated in the justification analysis.  相似文献
