Elimination of Listeria inoculated in ready-to-eat carrots by combination of antimicrobial coating and γ-irradiation

A combined treatment of an edible coating composed of trans-cinnamaldehyde (TCN; 0.5% p/p) with γ-irradiation was investigated against Listeria inoculated in peeled mini-carrots. First, the D₁₀ value (γ-irradiation dose required to eliminate 90% of the bacterial population) of TCN was evaluated under air. This treatment resulted in a 3.66-fold increase in relative bacterial radiosensitivity (RBR) as compared to the control without antimicrobial coating. Secondly, the shelf life of mini-carrots during 21 day of storage at 4 °C was studied. Antimicrobial coating containing TCN was assayed in combination with two irradiation doses (0.25 and 0.5 kGy). Results suggested that the inactive coating did not have any antimicrobial effect against Listeria while the coating containing TCN resulted in a 1.29 log reduction in carrots packed under air after 21 days of storage. Hence, these observations indicated that the combination of irradiation with antimicrobial coating played an important role in enhancing the radiosensitization of Listeria to γ-irradiation.     

Improvement of the mechanical and barrier properties of methylcellulose-based films by treatment with HEMA and silane monomers under gamma radiation

Methylcellulose (MC)-based films were prepared by casting from its 1% aqueous solution containing 0.5% vegetable oil, 0.25% glycerol and 0.025% Tween^®-80. Puncture strength (PS), puncture deformation (PD) and water vapor permeability (WVP) of the films were found to be 147 N/mm, 3.46 mm, and 6.34 g mm/m² day kPa, respectively. The monomer, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) (0.1–1%, w/w) was incorporated into the MC-based solution and films were prepared by casting. Films were then exposed to gamma radiation (5–25 kGy) and it revealed that 1% HEMA containing films showed the highest PS values (282 N/mm at 10 kGy). Silane monomer (3-aminopropyl tri-ethoxy silane) (0.1–1%, w/w) was also added into the MC-based films and were found to improve the strength of the films significantly. In comparison between HEMA and silane treatment onto MC-based films, it was observed that silane performed better strength and barrier properties. Surface morphology of the monomer treated films was examined by scanning electron microscopy and suggested better appearance than MC-based film.     

Synthesis of 3,7-diiodo-2,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']difurans: functional building blocks for the design of new conjugated polymers

3,7-Diiodo-2,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']difurans are efficiently prepared by an iodine-promoted double cyclization. This new heterocyclic core is readily modified by the attachment of alkyl chains for improved solubility. The use of these compounds for the synthesis of new conjugated polymers is also reported.     

Review of inventory systems with deterioration since 2001

This paper presents an up-to-date review of the advances made in the field of inventory control of perishable items (deteriorating inventory). The last extensive review on this topic dates back to 2001 (Goyal S.K. and Giri B.C., Recent trends in modeling of deteriorating inventory, European Journal of Operational Research, 134, 1–16). Since then, over two hundred articles on this subject have been published in the major journals on inventory control, indicating the need for a new review. We use the classification of Goyal and Giri based on shelf life characteristics and demand characteristics. Contributions are highlighted by discussing main system characteristics, including price discounts, backordering or lost sales, single or multiple items, one or two warehouses, single or multi-echelon, average cost or discounted cash flow, and payment delay.     

Cuts, matrix completions and graph rigidity

This paper brings together several topics arising in distinct areas: polyhedral combinatorics, in particular, cut and metric polyhedra; matrix theory and semidefinite programming, in particular, completion problems for positive semidefinite matrices and Euclidean distance matrices; distance geometry and structural topology, in particular, graph realization and rigidity problems. Cuts and metrics provide the unifying theme. Indeed, cuts can be encoded as positive semidefinite matrices (this fact underlies the approximative algorithm for max-cut of Goemans and Williamson) and both positive semidefinite and Euclidean distance matrices yield points of the cut polytope or cone, after applying the functions 1/π arccos(.) or √. When fixing the dimension in the Euclidean distance matrix completion problem, we find the graph realization problem and the related question of unicity of realization, which leads to the question of graph rigidity. Our main objective here is to present in a unified setting a number of results and questions concerning matrix completion, graph realization and rigidity problems. These problems contain indeed very interesting questions relevant to mathematical programming and we believe that research in this area could yield to cross-fertilization between the various fields involved.

Stability of the structure of a Riemann wave with two large shocks. We construct a global weak solution of an hyperbolic system of conservation laws, close to a Riemann problem which contains two large shock waves. Under some stability and damping conditions, we define a version of the scheme of A. Bressan which maintains the structure with two shocks in the solution and leads to refined estimates.

     

Studies of benzylisoquinolines. Comparison of the reactivity of the methylene group in 1-benzyl and 4-benzylisoquinolines

While examining the oxidation of 4-benzylisoquinolines to the corresponding 4-benzoylisoquinolines as well as the reactivity of these ketones towards hydroxylamine, reduction reagents and Grignard's reagents, there was found a definite difference in the behavior of the methylene group for these compounds as compared to that of papaverine (1-benzylisoquinolines).     

Curves with nodes,cusps and ordinary triple points

Summary We prove a ?virtual connectedness? theorem for plane curves with nodes, cusps and ordinary triple points. Irreducible curves are so obtained from virtually connected arrangements of lines.

The configuration of venoterpine

Exploration of the lithium–aluminum–silver system. Crystal and electronic structure analysis of new phases Li6.98Al4.15Ag0.87 and LiAlAg2

The lithium–aluminum–silver ternary system has been investigated and two new phases Li_6.98Al_4.15Ag_0.87 and LiAlAg₂ were characterized using both powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. These phases crystallize in the cubic system, space group (a=6.344(1), 6.3124(5) Å), they, respectively, display the Pearson's cF12- and cF16-type structural arrangements. Compared to Li₂AlAg, the only phase in the system reported so far, the structure of Li_6.98Al_4.15Ag_0.87 is disordered owing to atomic substitutions and contains a full site vacancy. Band structures and densities of states of Li_6.98Al_4.15Ag_0.87, LiAlAg₂ and Li₂AlAg have been calculated by a first principle pseudopotential method using the plane-wave basis CASTEP package.
