Index Heuristics for Multiclass M/G/1 Systems with Nonpreemptive Service and Convex Holding Costs

We consider the optimal service control of a multiclass M/G/1 queueing system in which customers are served nonpreemptively and the system cost rate is additive across classes and increasing convex in the numbers present in each class. Following Whittle's approach to a class of restless bandit problems, we develop a Langrangian relaxation of the service control problem which serves to motivate the development of a class of index heuristics. The index for a particular customer class is characterised as a fair charge for service of that class. The paper develops these indices and reports an extensive numerical investigation which exhibits strong performance of the index heuristics for both discounted and average costs.     

Liquid Ion-Selective Electrodes for Determining Nonionic Surfactants

It was shown that nonionic surfactants (NS) can be determined by potentiometry using liquid NS-selective electrodes. The effect of medium acidity and foreign substances on the operation of liquid NS-selective electrodes was studied. Some properties of NS-selective electrodes were determined.     

On Congruence of Complex Matrices

For each of a standard set of normal forms for (n × n) complex matrices under the relation of congruence, explicit matrices are exhibited which transform, via congruence, the normal form to its transpose.     

Unsteady motion in single-line flow-injection systems

Unsteady motion in single-line flow-injection systems consisting of n tubular elements with valve or hydrodynamic injection is studied theoretically. A formula for the duration of the initial period of unsteady flow is derived. This initial period is much shorter than the mean residence time of the analyte in practical systems. It can therefore be neglected in mathematical modelling of such systems. Experimental data obtained with single-line systems with valve and hydrodynamic injection confirmed the validity of the theoretical equations.     

Upper bounds on correlation decay for one-dimensional long-range spin-glass models

Some recent results on one-dimensional spin-glass models with polynomially decreasing interactions are described.     

Reciprocating sliding wear behavior of laser-clad small amplitude Mo2Ni3Si/NiSi metal silicide composite coatings

Mo₂Ni₃Si/NiSi metal silicide composite coatings with a fine microstructure consisting of Mo₂Ni₃Si primary dendrites and the interdendritic Mo₂Ni₃Si/NiSi eutectics were fabricated on austenitic stainless steel AISI 321 by laser cladding process. Small amplitude reciprocating sliding wear resistance of the coatings is evaluated as functions of normal load and slip amplitude and the wear mechanisms were discussed based on worn surface morphology observations. Results showed that the Mo₂Ni₃Si/NiSi coatings have excellent small amplitude reciprocating sliding wear resistance.     

226Ra in milk of the dairy cattle from the rural region of Pernambuco, Brazil

Summary Studies performed by the Brazilian Nuclear Corporation (NUCLEBRAS), in collaboration with the Geological Survey Company of Brazil (CPRM), identified high levels of natural uranium in the districts of Pedra and Venturosa, in the rural region of the state of Pernambuco (PE) - Brazil, where the maximum value found in rocks was 22,000 mg.     

A new reaction of phosphorylated N-sulfonylimines with hydrophosphoryl agents involving C → N transfer of phosphoryl groups

Hydrophosphoryl nucleophilic agents add to the CN bond of N-sulfonyltrichloroacetimidoylphosphonates to give unstable C,C-diphosphorylated adducts, which undergo competitive 1,2-C → N phosphorotropic rearrangement and dehydrochlorination with the formation of aza-Perkow reaction products, C,N-diphosphorylated dichlorovinylsulfonamides. This is the first reliably identified case of an aza-Perkow transformation for acid phosphites and their initial nucleophilic attack at the C atom of the azomethine bond in the aza-substrates.     

Nature of π-Electronic Transitions in UV Spectra of Deoxyvasicinone and Its Derivatives

The principal types of electronic transitions in absorption spectra of deoxyvasicinone and its 6-amino- and 6-nitro-derivatives were determined by analyzing the electron-density distributions in excited states calculated using ZINDO/S.     

NMR Detection of Phase Transition in a ZSM-5 Silicalite Caused by the Adsorbed Hexane and Decane Molecules

Times of longitudinal T _1b and transverse T _2b magnetic relaxation of hexane and decane molecules in micropores of ZSM-5 silicalite were measured as functions of the content of these liquid n-alkanes in zeolite and of temperature. The stepwise changes in the T _1b and T _2b times were revealed in the region of 8% content of hydrocarbons. The observed changes in the concentration and temperature dependences of T _1b and T _2b times are explained by the rearrangement of silicalite crystal lattice under the action of adsorbed molecules.
