Intrinsic paramagnetic defects probe superionic phase transition in Ag1−xCuxI (x=0, 0.05, 0.15 and 0.50) nanocrystals

EPR probed the zincblende (γ) to cubic (α) AgI structural phase transition in AgI at 423 K through two intrinsic paramagnetic centers: an Ag²⁺-based hole center (signal ‘A’) and an Ag⁰-based conduction electron center (signal ‘B’) associated with AgI nanocrystallites. Sudden drops in intensity (I_PP), <g>, and ΔH_PP observed at 423 K for pure AgI nanocrystals. Addition of Cu in AgI increases the thermal stability of the cation sublattice as seen from the increase in the transition temperature from 423 K (undoped AgI) to 453 K. Abrupt jumps in the number of spins (N) and reciprocal susceptibility (1/χ) observed at increased phase transition temperatures in Cu-substituted AgI relative to that in undoped AgI reflects progressively strengthened local bonding configuration of γ-AgI structure induced by Cu.     

Dynamic programming—neural network real-time traffic adaptive signal control algorithm

In this paper, an “intelligent” isolated intersection control system was developed. The developed “intelligent” system makes “real time” decisions as to whether to extend (and how much) current green time. The model developed is based on the combination of the dynamic programming and neural networks. Many tests show that the outcome (the extension of the green time) of the proposed neural network is nearly equal to the best solution. Practically negligible CPU times were achieved, and were thus absolutely acceptable for the “real time” application of the developed algorithm.     

Investigations on the antioxidant activity of 5,8-dihydroxy-1,4-dihydro-1,4-methanonaphthalene (DDMN)

5,8-dihydroxy-1,4-dihydro-1,4-methanonaphthalene (DDMN), a substituted phenol, is synthesized by the reduction of a cyclic dione, 1,4,4a,8a-tetrahydro-endo-1,4-methano-naphtha-5,8-dione (THMND). The pulse radiolysis technique has been employed to understand the nature of transient species formed by the reaction of radiolytic species of water radiolysis with DDMN. ^•OH radicals were observed to react with DDMN with a bimolecular rate constant of 1.5 × 10¹⁰ dm³ mol⁻¹ s⁻¹. The inhibition of radiation-induced lipid-peroxidation by DDMN was studied in rat liver microsomes by assessing the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). It was found to be strongly inhibitory. The results suggest that DDMN has very good antioxidant activity and may possibly emerge as a good radio-protector. Dr. Hari Mohan: since deceased.     

Novel optical probe for quantum Hall system

Surface photovoltage (SPV) spectroscopy has been used for the first time to explore Landau levels of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in modulation doped InP/InGaAs/InP QW in the quantum Hall regime. The technique gives spectroscopically distinct signals from the bulk Landau levels and the edge states. Evolution of the bulk Landau levels and the edge electronic states is investigated at 2.0 K for magnetic field up to 8 T using SPV spectroscopy.     

Cu(I)-Catalyzed cycloaddition of constrained azido-alkynes: access to 12- to 17-membered monomeric triazolophanes incorporating furanoside rings

A strained monomeric 12-membered triazolophane was formed by the Cu(I)-catalyzed intramolecular cycloaddition of an azide to an alkyne having a constrained tether incorporating an aromatic ring and a furanoside ring. Similar cycloadditions of azido-alkynes having ester, furanoside and peptidic tethers led to the formation of monomeric triazolophanes of higher ring sizes.     

Ion transport and battery discharge characteristics of polymer electrolyte based on PEO complexed with NaFeF4 salt

Ion-conducting solvent-free solid polymer electrolytes based on polyethylene oxide (PEO) complexed with sodium ferric tetrafluoride (NaFeF₄) were prepared using a solution casting technique. The complexation of the films was investigated through X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic studies. Measurements of DC conductivity in the temperature range 300–370 K and the transference numbers were carried out to investigate the nature of charge transport in the polymer electrolyte system. Transference number data shows that the charge transport in this system is found to be predominantly due to ions. Using these polymer electrolytes, electrochemical cells were fabricated with the configuration of Na/(PEO+NaFeF₄)/(I₂+C+electrolyte). Various cell parameters, such as open circuit voltage, short circuit current, power density, and energy density of the device were evaluated and reported.
