Synthesis of tungsten carbide nanopowder via submerged discharge method

Tungsten carbide nanopowder was prepared via pulsed discharge of bulk tungsten and graphite rods immersed in pure ethanol. The effect of discharge parameters on the characteristics of final products was investigated. Structural and morphological characterization of nanopowder was performed by means of X-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy. In order to determine the feasibility of using synthesized material as an electrocatalyst, tungsten carbide nanopowder was tested for hydrogen evolution. A correlation was found between morphology of nanoparticles, their phase composition and electrocatalytic activity.     

Gravitational lensing and rotation curve

Based on the geodesic equation in a static spherically symmetric metric we discuss the rotation curve and gravitational lensing. The rotation curve determines one function in the metric without assuming Einstein’s equations. Then lensing is considered in the weak field approximation of general relativity. From the null geodesics we derive the lensing equation. The gravitational potential U(r) which determines the lensing is directly give by the rotation curve U(r) = −v ²(r). This allows to test general relativity on the scale of galaxies where dark matter is relevant.     

Investigations on the dynamics of ferro- and antiferroelectric betaine compounds

Measurements of the dielectric permittivity around the ferroelectric transition of betaine arsenate and around the antiferroelectric one of deuterated betaine arsenate reveal relaxation-type dispersions in the upper MHz-region. The data analysis points to two mechanisms which contribute to the low temperature phase transitions of these crystals. In case of betaine phosphate Raman-spectra demonstrate that besides the antiferroelectric transition at 86 K a second structural transition exists at 81 K. Both transitions correlate with dielectric anomalies and the unit cell doubles at 81 K.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. H.E. Müser on the occasion of his 60th birthday     

Positron-lifetime study of vacancy annealing in neutron-irradiated GaAs

Positron-lifetime measurements have been used to study the annealing of vacancies in neutron-irradiated GaAs. The vacancies which are interpreted as defects in the Ga sublattice disappear in a single annealing stage (at 500°C in GaAs doped with Si or Zn, and at 600°C in Cr-doped GaAs).

The problem of uniqueness of monotone continuous linear extensions of $$T_{(2N)} = \{ 1,T_1 ,...,T_{2N} \} \in E'_{(2N)} = \prod\limits_{n = 0}^{2N} {E'_n } $$ is solved. A characterization of a relativistic QFT in terms of finitely many VEV's is derived. All results are illustrated by an explicit discussion of the extension problem for special cases ofT ₍₄₎={1,0,T ₂,T ₃,T ₄}. This discussion contains explicitly necessary and sufficient conditions onT ₍₄₎ for the existence of minimal extensions and some convenient sufficient conditions.     

Untersuchungen über den Phytolgehalt von Pflanzen

Zusammenfassung Es wurde festgestellt, daß der Phytolgehalt von Blättern der Roßkastanie (Aesculus hippocastanum) im Laufe der Vegetationsperiode von praktisch Null in den Knospen mit der Ausbildung der Blätter rasch zum Maximalwert ansteigt. Es sind keine Anhaltspunkte dafür gegeben, daß wesentliche Phytolmengen außer den im Chlorophyll gebundenen in den Knospen oder grünen Blättern vorhanden sind. Dagegen bleibt bei der herbstlichen Laubverfärbung der Phytolgehalt noch erhalten und nimmt erst mit der Verrottung der abgefallenen Blätter ab.Blätter und Stengel von Feuerbohnen (Phaseolus multiflorus), die in Dunkelheit gezogen wurden und praktisch chlorophyllfrei waren, enthielten auch kein Phytol.     

Problems, Models and Complexity. Part II: Application to the DLSP

In Part I of this study, we suggest to identify an operations research (OR) problem with the equivalence class of models describing the problem and enhance the standard computer-science theory of computational complexity to be applicable to this situation of an often model-based OR context. The Discrete Lot-sizing and Scheduling Problem (DLSP) is analysed here in detail to demonstrate the difficulties which can arise if these aspects are neglected and to illustrate the new theoretical concept. In addition, a new minimal model is introduced for the DLSP which makes this problem eventually amenable to a rigorous analysis of its computational complexity.     

Tunable UV radiation at short wavelengths (188–240 nm) generated by sum-frequency mixing in lithium borate

Sum-frequency mixing (₃=₁+₂) of UV laser radiation (₁=266 nm and 213 nm) and tunable coherent infrared light (₂=1.2–2.6 m) in lithium borate (LBO) generates radiation at short wavelengths (₃=188–242 nm). The UV radiation at ₁ is produced by the fourth and fifth harmonic of a pulsed Nd-YAG laser. The infrared light is generated with an optical parametric oscillator of beta barium borate. The phase-matching angle is measured as function of ₃ and compared with calculated values. For UV laser radiation at shorter wavelengths (173 nm₁213 nm) the calculations predict an extension of the tuning range of the sum-frequency generated at ₃ to wavelengths as short as the LBO transmission cutoff at 160 nm.     

Investigation of the NMR enhancement factor in CuMn spin glasses

The NMR enhancement factor of a frozenCuMn spin glass has been measured at a temperatureT?T _g /5. The measurements were performed as function of static magnetic fields of different directions. A two component model of a spin glass has been outlined. One component being a “system of single spins” and the other one being a “subsystem of clusters”. Both components were attributed to different kinds of interaction being RKKY and dipole interaction respectively. The effective anisotropy field of the single spin system consists of two unidirectional contributionsH _a ^s andH _a ^c , which have been measured for different conditions. A second anisotropy fieldH _d binds the cluster system to the system of single spins. All anisotropy fields depend on the annealing temperature of the alloys.     

Analysis of Prigogine's theory of subdynamics

We discuss in full detail the basic results of the theory of subdynamics. We analyse the regularity requirements of the projective components of the resolvent in the theory and correct a recent mathematical result of M. Courbage regarding the impossibility of simultaneous analytic continuation of the collision and creation operators. We offer further some critiques on the interpretation of the various results of the subdynamics formalism.
