Observation of the effects of radially sheared electric fields on the suppression of turbulent vortex structures and the associated transverse loss in GAMMA 10

Vortexlike turbulent structures in hot-ion mode plasmas with several keV are observed in the case with a radially produced weak shear of electric fields E(r). However, a strong E(r) shear formation due to a high ion-confining potential phi(c) production clears up these vortices together with plasma-confinement improvement and disappearance of both drift-wave and turbulencelike Fourier spectral signals. These findings are based on three-time progress in phi(c) in comparison to phi(c) attained 1992-2002. The significant advance of phi(c) is well extended in line with proposed potential-formation physics scalings.     

Diastereoselective photochromism of bisbenzothienylethenes with an oxycarbonyl-related functional group on the side chain

Nine 1-[2-(1-substituted)ethyl-3-benzothienyl]-2-(2-methyl-3-benzothienyl)hexafluorocyclopentenes (4-substituted benzoyloxy, N-arylcarbamoyloxy, and aryloxycarbonyloxy) were synthesized. They showed diastereoselective photochromic ring closure upon UV irradiation. Among them, 4-nitrophenoxycarbonyloxy-substituted compound recorded a remarkable 94% diastereomer excess with 91% conversion to the closed form.     

Experimental observation of soft X-rays and suprathermal ions from rare-gas cryogenic solid targets

We investigated characteristics of the soft X-ray emission in the wavelength range of 6–16 nm using various rare-gas cryogenic solid targets irradiated with a nanosecond laser pulse. Suprathermal ions having a maximum velocity of the order of 10⁷ cm/s were detected for three rare-gas targets (Ar, Kr, and Xe). The spatial distributions of the soft X-rays and the suprathermal ions were measured for Xe cryogenic solid targets and found to vary as cos² and cos⁵, respectively, where is the angle to the target normal. By integrating the observed cos² spatial distribution, the conversion efficiency of the soft X-ray emission in the wavelength range from 6 to 16 nm was evaluated to be 0.2%/pulse. Glochidionionosides A-D: megastigmane glucosides from leaves of Glochidion zeylanicum (Gaertn.) A. Juss

Five megastigmane glucosides were isolated from the leaves of Glochidion zeylanicum. One of them was a known compound, blumenol C O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), and the structures of the four new compounds, glochidionionosides A-D (2-5), were mainly elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including a modified Mosher's method. The absolute configurations of the six-membered ring of glochidionionoside D (5) were deduced by beta-D-glucopyranosylation-induced shift trends in the (13)C-NMR spectra and confirmed by X-ray analysis as its p-bromobenzoate (5b), and the axis chirality of C-7 was determined to be R.     

Dissolution behavior of homologously generated surfactant molecular complexes (SMC) in aqueous media: A clue to the elucidation of the phenomenon "solubilization"

The solution behavior of homologously obtained crystalline surfactant molecular complexes (SMCs) that are generated between quaternary ammonium bromide and several additive materials has shed light on the recognition of fundamentals of solubilization. It has been revealed that the SMCs derived from long-alkyl-chain surfactants are sufficiently dissolved in water through the path of micellar dispersion above the cmc's of the complex surfactants, whereas the short-chain homologues cannot dissolve in water but dissociate the complexes, resulting in a heterogeneous phase made up of the liberated additives. The fact agrees perfectly with the familiar aspects of solubilization by surfactant; i.e., the longer the alkyl chain of the surfactant becomes, the more effective it is for solubilization. Based on these results, it has been deduced that the possibility for any pair of surfactant and solubilizate (additive) to realize solubilization simply depends on the relative importance of equilibrium of dissociation or association of the SMC species in aqueous medium.     

Control of flow rate in supercritical fluid chromatography

Summary Supercritical Fluid Chromatograph was constructed using two pumps and two restrictors. With this system in conjunction with the fused silica column packed with relatively large particles (40 μm), the flow rate was controlled both for isobaric and pressure programmed operations. Application of this system to the determination of molecular weight distribution of polystyrene oligomers was presented.     

Reproduction of distance matrices and original time series from recurrence plots and their applications

We propose a method to reproduce distance matrices and original time series from recurrence plots. The procedure is to (i)convert a recurrence plot to a weighted graph and (ii)calculate a distance between each pair of nodes on this weighted graph. We demonstrate this method by reproducing the topological shape of original time series. We also propose two applications. The first application is to obtain the maximal Lyapunov exponent from a recurrence plot without reproducing the shapes of original time series. The second application is to reconstruct a common deterministic driving force from observations of forced systems. Thus, the method opens new fields in data analysis.
