Photonic bandgap fiber with a silica core and multilayer dielectric cladding

A new technique for fabricating a photonic bandgap fiber is proposed. A multilayer Si--SiO2 film is deposited upon a silica glass fiber, and a clear bandgap is observed in the loss spectrum. The properties of the bandgap are easily controlled by adjustment of the thickness and the refractive index of the multilayer film.     

Vacuum-cored hollow waveguide for transmission of high-energy, nanosecond Nd:YAG laser pulses and its application to biological tissue ablation

A vacuum-cored hollow waveguide has been found to transmit 1064-nm, Q-switched Nd:YAG laser pulses. With this scheme, laser-induced air breakdown was completely suppressed, and the laser-induced damage threshold of the waveguide's inner coating was significantly increased. With a 1-m-long, 1-mm inner-diameter, cyclic olefin polymer-coated silver hollow waveguide, the maximum transmitted laser energy was as great as 158 mJ/pulse (20.1 J/cm(2)), at a repetition rate of 10 Hz in a 90 degrees -bent waveguide condition. The corresponding transmitted peak laser power was 17.6 MW. With the transmitted laser pulses, deep ablation of myocardium tissues was demonstrated in vitro.     

Stable phase of metallic hydrogens at high pressures

The stable phase of metallic hydrogens at zero temperatures is studied by the structural expansion. A number of structural transitions are predicted to occur with increase of the pressure.     

Alkane oxidation via photochemical excitation of a self-assembled molecular cage

The photoexcitation of a self-assembled M6L4-type coordination cage accommodating photochemically inert alkane guests (e.g., adamantane and cyclooctane) led to the regioselective oxidation of the guest within the cage. Under anaerobic conditions, the guest oxidation was accompanied by the stable radical formation as indicated by ESR spectrometry (g = 2.002) and change in solution color (from colorless to blue). These phenomena were shown to be characteristic of the self-assembled molecular systems: i.e., from the M6L4 supersetGn assembly, none of the components (M, L, or G) can be eliminated for the unusual oxidation and/or radical formation.     

Infrared-laser delivery system based on polymer-coated hollow fibers

Infrared Er : YAG laser delivery systems based on hollow fibers with an internal polymer layer has been developed. The system consists of a hollow fiber as the delivery medium, a launching coupler for effective coupling between the laser beam and the fiber, and a sealed hollow-fiber tip attached at the output end of the fiber. Fabrication process of the fiber and attachment of the delivery system is reported.     

Two new brominated C15-acetogenins from the red alga Laurencia japonensis

Abstract

We report on the chemical characteristics of the red alga Laurencia japonensis, collected off the coast of Yoshio, Katsuura, Boso Peninsula, Japan. We isolated two new brominated C₁₅-acetogenins in this species, which we name katsuurenyne A (1) and katsuurenyne B (2), along with two already known halogenated terpenes [2,10-dibromo-3-chloro-α-chamigrene (7) and aplysiadiol (8)]. We extensively analysed spectral data (from IR, ESI-MS, 1D-NMR and 2D-NMR) to confirm the structure of these compounds.     

Fabrication Techniques and Characteristics of Ultra-Thin Optical Polarizing Films Using Gold Island Films

Fabrication techniques of ultra-thin optical polarizing films using gold island films have been investigated for the near-infrared region. The polarizing films are fabricated by stretching the periodic multilayers consisting of gold island layers and glass layers. We have experimentally investigated the optimum fabricating conditions necessary to induce large optical anisotropy into the gold island layers and have formed submicrometer-thick polarizing films with an extinction ratio of ≥20 dB in a near-infrared region longer than 800 nm. These polarizing films could be useful micro-polarizers for fiber-embedded in-line optical devices, micro-optics, and hybrid integrated optics.     

Loss reduction of dielectric-coated metallic hollow waveguides for CO2 laser light transmission

A condition for reducing transmission loss of a dielectric-coated metallic hollow waveguide is shown theoretically when the inner metallic surface is not perfect. It is also shown that the transmission loss for CO₂ laser light is 10.6 μm wavelength is able to be estimated from an attenuation spectrum of a short waveguide. By fabricating a ZnSe coated Ag hollow waveguide of short length, we have shown that it has a lower loss than a Ge coated waveguide for CO₂ laser light.     

Excitation dependent losses and temperature increase in various hollow waveguides at 10.6 μm

Theoretical and experimental studies have been made on excitation dependent transmission properties of various hollow waveguides at 10.6 μm. A heat problem of the waveguide has been experimentally treated when high powered CO₂ laser light is launched.
