PREPARATION OF PHOTOFUNCTIONAL POLYMER THIN FILMS BY LANGMUIR-BLODGETT TECHNIQUE

Polymer LB films containing photofuntional groups were prepared by the copolymerization of N-dodecylacrylamide (DDA), which has an excellent property to form a stable monolayer and LB multilayerswith photofunctional monomers. Tris(2, 2'-bipyridine) ruthenium complex, Ru(bpy)_3~(2+), one of the most well-known redox-active sensitizer, was incorporated into the DDA copolymer. The photogalvanic effect based onthe photoinduced electron transfer using the ruthenium complex in the polymer LB monolayer was discussed.     

Molecular orientation of azobenzene chromophores in ultrathin polymer nanosheets studied by attenuated total reflection spectroscopy

This paper describes characterization of molecular orientation for azobenzene moieties in a polymer nanosheet. Copolymers of N-[4-(phenylazo)phenyl] acrylamide (PAZoA) with tert-pentyl acrylamide (tPA) were synthesized and the monolayers deposited on tapered quartz waveguides by Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique. Spectroscopic properties of the copolymer (p(tPA/PAZoA)) monolayers were monitored by integrated optical waveguide technique on the molecular level. Molecular orientation of the azobenzene was precisely determined by polarized absorption spectra. It was found that the azobenzene groups took a horizontal orientation and distributed uniformly in the p(tPA/PAZoA) monolayer without significant PAZoA aggregation. Photoisomerization process from trans to cis form was also investigated. More than half of the trans form (60–70%) was photoisomerized under unpolarized light irradiation, and the photoisomerization rate was independent on the PAZoA contents. This implies that the microenvironment of PAZoA moieties was almost the same in three different p(tPA/PAZoA) monolayers.     

Remarks on torsionfreeness and its applications

In this article, we shall characterize torsionfreeness of modules with respect to a semidualizing module in terms of the Serre’s condition (S_n). As its applications, we give a characterization of Cohen-Macaulay rings R such that R_𝔭 is Gorenstein for all prime ideals 𝔭 of height less than n, and we will give a partial answer of Tachikawa conjecture and Auslander-Reiten conjecture.     

Regioselective alkyl and alkynyl substitution reactions of epoxy alcohols by the use of organoaluminum ate complexes: regiochemical reversal of nucleophilic substitution reactions

Unprecedented nucleophilic substitution reactions of 2,3-epoxy-1-alkanols with alkyl- and alkynylaluminum ate complexes have been studied and demonstrated to occur at the C2 position with extremely high stereoselectivity, i.e., with exactly reversed regioselectivity to that obtained in the substitution reactions by normal organoaluminum reagents, resulting in the formation of the C2-alkyl and C2-alkynyl substitution products in excellent yields.     

Pt(II)- or Au(III)-catalyzed [3+2] cycloaddition of metal-containing azomethine ylides: highly efficient synthesis of the mitosene skeleton

[reaction: see text] Only 1-3 mol % of PtCl(2) or AuBr(3) was sufficient to promote generation and [3+2] cycloaddition of transition-metal-containing azomethine ylides derived from N-(o-alkynylphenyl)imines bearing an internal alkyne moiety. A highly efficient method for the preparation of synthetically useful tricyclic indole derivatives having a substituent at the 3-position of the indole nucleus was established by this method.     

Molecular optical gating devices based on polymer nanosheets assemblies

We describe here a polymer nanosheet assembly that serves as a molecular photoswitching and optical exclusive OR (EXOR) logic gate. Separate polymer nanosheets (monolayers) containing phenanthrene, anthracene, and dinitrobenzene chromophore were prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique (LB films). A bilayer-couple, consisting of phenanthrene (sensitizer) monolayer and dinitrobenzene (acceptor) monolayer, and the other couple, of anthracene monolayer and dinitrobenzene monolayer, were confirmed to function as a photodiode showing current rectification on light irradiation. The two photodiodes are connected as each photocurrent direction becomes opposite. In the polymer photodiode array (LB films), anodic photocurrent was observed when the anthracene was selectively excited. On the other hand, cathodic photocurrent was observed by selective excitation of the phenanthrene. Moreover, the output photocurrent displayed a very small value when the phenanthrene and anthracene were excited simultaneously. The performance is discussed for this gate's application to an optical EXOR logic gate.     

Synthesis and anti-HIV-1 activity of novel 10-thiaisoalloxazines,a structural analog of C-5 and/or C-6 substituted pyrimidine acyclonucleoside

A series of novel 10-thiaisoalloxazine derivatives bearing an alkoxymethyl or benzyloxymethyl moiety at the N-1 position has been synthesized through the bromination of 1-substituted-5-hydroxyuracils and subsequent condensation with aminobenzenethiol in a one-pot reaction. Contrary to the previous report, the formation of intermediary 5,6-diethoxy-5-hydroxy-5,6-dihydrouracil seems to be not the necessary factor for the formation of the thiaisoalloxazines, since the reaction proceeds in tetrahydrofuran (THF) or acetonitrile far more smoothly than in ethanol. The anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 activity of the resulted thiaisoalloxazine derivatives was evaluated in lymphocyte cells based on the inhibitory activity against the viral-induced cytopathic activity. Among the derivatives, compounds 6, 7, and 8 bearing an alkoxymethyl moiety at the N-1 position exhibited modest inhibitory activity towards the cytotopathic effect of HIV-1.
