Generation of Selenoaldehydes via Retro Diels–Alder Reaction and Their Behavior in the Reaction with Some Enophiles

Abstract

The [4, 2] cycloadducts of selenoaldehydes and anthracene regenerate selenoaldehydes in situ quantitatively under neutral conditions via thermal retro Diels–Alder reaction. The reactions of selenoaldehydes generated by this method with 2-silyloxy-1,3-butadiene, 2-methoxyfuran, and 5-ethoxyoxazoles are described.     

Closed-form representations for third-order aberrations of two-aspherical mirror aplanats with the mirror tilt and decenter

Approximate equations are derived for imaging aberrations of two-aspherical-mirror aplanats for soft X-ray imaging. These expressions include the Seidel terms for unperturbed states and the axial coma resulting from the tilt and decenter of the mirror surface. A simple analytical method for reducing both the Seidel terms and the axial coma enables us to design novel soft X-ray imaging systems utilizing a wide field of view with reduced sensitivity to mirror misalignments. The method is illustrated by applying it to a two-mirror system for soft X-ray microscopy with a magnification m =−1/50. The design example showed an appreciable reduction in sensitivity, as compared with the existing anastigmatic designs that include a standard Schwarzschild configuration. Imaging aberrations of the novel system are also confirmed by a numerical ray tracing method.     

Efficient synthesis of useful heterocycles via transition metal-catalyzed cascade processes

This paper reports our recent results from synthesis of some useful heterocycles, for example oxazolidinones, indoles, and quinoxalinones, by transition metal-catalyzed cascade processes. The scope and limitations of these procedures and the reaction mechanism for formation of the heterocycles are also discussed.     

Nature of closed‐ and open‐shell interactions between noble metals and rare gas atoms

Interactions between noble metals and rare gases have become an interesting topic over the last few years. In this work, a computational study of the open‐shell (d¹⁰s¹) and closed‐shell (d¹⁰s and d¹⁰s²) noble metals (M = Cu, Ag, and Au) with three heaviest rare gas atoms (Rg = Kr, Xe, and Rn) has been performed. Potential energy curves based on ab initio [MP2, MP4, QCISD, and CCSD(T)] and DFT functionals (M06‐2X and CAM‐B3LYP) were obtained for ionic and neutral AuXe complexes. Dissociation energies indicate that neutral metals have the lowest and cationic metals have the highest affinities for interaction with rare gas atoms. For the same metals, there is a continuous increase in dissociation energies (D_e) from Kr to Rn. The nature of bonding and the trend of D_e and equilibrium bond lengths (R_e) have been interpreted by means of quantum theory of atoms in molecules, natural bond orbital, and energy decomposition analysis. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     

Total Synthesis of Siomycin A: Construction of Synthetic Segments

The five practical segments for the total synthesis of siomycin A, that is, the dehydropiperidine segment A ( 5 ), the pentapeptide segment B ( 3 ), the dihydroquinoline segment C ( 6 ), and the β‐phenylselenoalanine dipeptide segments D ( 7 ) and E ( 4 ), were synthesized. Segment A ( 5 ) was constructed by the coupling of the azomethine ylide and the chiral sulfinimine, followed by the stereoselective reduction of the six‐membered imine function. Segment B ( 3 ) was synthesized by the phenylselenylation of the β‐lactone, stereoselective vinylzinc addition to the chiral sulfinimine, and oxazoline–thioamide conversion. Segment C ( 6 ) was prepared by the one‐pot olefination of the tetrahydroquinoline N‐oxide using triflic anhydride and triethylamine, stereoselective reduction of the methyl ketone function, and regioselective Yb(OTf)₃‐catalyzed epoxide opening by the amino group. Segments D ( 7 ) and E ( 4 ) were synthesized by coupling of the properly protected β‐phenylselenoalanines.     

Total Synthesis of Siomycin A: Completion of the Total Synthesis

The total synthesis of siomycin A ( 1 ), a representative compound of the thiostrepton family of peptide antibiotics, was achieved by incorporating the five synthetic segments A ( 2 ), B ( 3 ), C ( 4 ), D ( 5 ), and E ( 6 ). The dehydropiperidine segment A ( 2 ) was esterified with the dihydroquinoline segment C ( 4 ), and the subsequent coupling with the β‐phenylselenoalanine dipeptide segment D ( 5 ) at the segment C portion followed by lactamization between the segments A and D gave segment A‐C‐D ( 27 ). This was amidated with the pentapeptide segment B ( 3 ) at the segment A portion followed by one‐pot cyclization (between segments A and B) and elongation (with the β‐phenylselenoalanine dipeptide segment E ( 6 ) at the segment A portion), thus furnishing siomycin A ( 1 ).     

Yessotoxin analogues in several strains of Protoceratium reticulatum in Japan determined by liquid chromatography-hybrid triple quadrupole/linear ion trap mass spectrometry

Several strains of Protoceratium reticulatum, one of the dinoflagellates producing yessotoxins (YTXs), were collected from various shellfish producing areas in Japan. YTXs in the cultured strains were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Neutral loss scan monitoring, multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) for more than 20 YTX analogues, and full-scan MS/MS spectra obtained with a hybrid triple quadrupole/linear ion trap mass spectrometer showed that yessotoxin (YTX), 45,46,47-trinoryessotoxin (trinorYTX), 1-homoyessotoxin (homoYTX), and 45,46,47-trinor-1-homoyessotoxin (trinor-1-homoYTX) were the dominant toxins in these strains of P. reticulatum. Enone isomer of 42,43,44,45,46,47,55-heptanor-41-oxoyessotoxin (noroxoYTX enone) was also detected in some strains. Toxin profiles and contents were different among the strains. Some strains produced YTX, trinorYTX, 1-homoYTX, trinor-1-homoYTX, and noroxoYTX enone, whereas other strains produced only YTX or 1-homoYTX. This is the first identification of 1-homoYTX and noroxoYTX enone in P. reticulutum in Japan. Some strains did not produce any detectable YTX analogues.     

Effect of types of proximal femoral fractures on physical function such as lower limb function and Activities of Daily Living

Objectives: This study aimed to assess physical function such as lower limb function and Activities of Daily Living after surgery for proximal femoral fractures ( unstable medial femoral neck fracture and trochanteric fracture). Methods: This study enrolled 68 patients with proximal femoral fractures. Isometric knee extension strength (IKES), the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) hip score, and the number of days required to develop straight leg raising, transfer, and T-caneassisted gait abilities to become independent were assessed. Patients were classified based on the types of proximal femoral fractures, namely unstable medial femoral neck fracture (bipolar hip arthroplasty [BHA] group), stable trochanteric fracture (S group), and unstable trochanteric fracture (US group). Results: IKES and the JOA hip score were significantly better in the BHA group than in the S and US groups. IKES and the JOA hip score were significantly worse in the US group than in the BHA and S groups. Both transfer and T-cane-assisted gait abilities of patients in the BHA and S groups were indifferent. However, all physical functions were significantly worse in the US group. Conclusions: Our study results suggested that physical therapists plan the different rehabilitation program for the patients with proximal femoral fractures who were classified into three types, namely unstable medial femoral neck fracture, stable trochanteric fracture, and unstable trochanteric fracture, instead of two types.
