Studies in spiroheterocycles. Part XVII. synthesis of novel fluorine containing spiro[indole-pyranobenzopyran] and spiro[indenopyran-indole] derivatives

An elegant one-step synthesis of two novel spiro ring systems viz: spiro[3H-indole-3,4′-(2′-amino-3′-carbonitrile-[4′H]-pyrano[3,2-c]benzopyran)]-2,5′(1H)-dione8 and spiro[(2-amino-3-carbonitrile-indeno[1,2-b]pyran)-4(5H)>3′-[3H]indole]-2′,5(1′H)-diones in 80–85% yields is described. The spiro heterocycles were prepared by the reactions of fluorine containing 3-dicyanomethylene-2H-indol-2-ones with 4-hydroxy-2H-1-benzopyran-2-one and 1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione respectively. The synthesized compounds have been characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, ir, pmr, ¹⁹F nmr and mass spectral data.     

N-benzamidosalicylaldimine complexes of copper(II), nickel(II), cobalt(II), iron(II), manganese(II), oxyvanadium(IV) and oxytitanium(IV)

Summary N-benzamidosalicylaldimine (H₂L) complexes of Cu^II, Ni^II, Co^II, Fe^II, Mn^II. VO_IV and TiO_IV have been prepared. The ligand probably coordinates to the metal from the hydroxyl, carbonyl and imino groups.     

Phase-Transfer Catalysis: Acylation of β-Dicarbonyl Compounds

The alkylation of β-dicarbonyl compounds under phase-transfer conditions has been studied in detail and, in virtually all of the reported examples, the C-alkylation products have been found to predominate.^1–6 Only when the reaction rate is slow is there any evidence for O-alkylation as, for example, when there is steric hindrance to the approach of the alkylating agent to the carbanionic centre.^1,7 There is no record, however, of the corresponding acylation reactions.

Both the relative reactivities and the initial isomer distributions in the sulphonation of polycyclic hydrocarbons were found to be strongly dependent on the composition of reaction medium.     

Flow of a particular class of non-Newtonian visco-elastic and visco-inelastic fluids near a stagnation point

Zusammenfassung Die Bewegungsgleichungen für die stationären Strömungen einer besonderen Klasse nichtnewtonscher viskoelastischer und viskounelastischer Flüssigkeiten nahe einem Staupunkt sind nach der Kármán-Pohlhausen-Methode integriert worden. Es hat sich gezeigt, dass der Effekt der Querviskosität und Viskoelastizität durch den dimensionslosen ParameterR=a/ beziehungsweiseK=a/ dargestellt werden. Aus der Betrachtung der Dissipationsfunktion folgern wir, dass der ganze Umfang der negativen Werte vonK undR physikalisch zulässig ist. Die zweidimensionalen Grenzschichtgleichungen für viskoelastische Flüssigkeiten sind abgeleitet worden.     

Colloid chemical studies of polystyrene latices polymerized without any surface-active agents

Summary The influence of secondary minimum for the stability of spherical colloid has been studied using a series of soap-free polystyrene latices from 350 m to 1400 m in diameter.The critical flocculation concentration (c. f. c.) and the zeta-potential at the c. f. c. for each latex were determined with several salts of different ionic valencies. The values of c. f. c. varied with the particle size, reaching a maximum value at 750 m and then decreasing gradually with the diameter.Another phenomenon detected in the experiment was the complete reversibility of coagulation which was observed only in the cases of large size latices, i. e., the coagulates of large size particles were fully redispersed in the solution by stirring. The time-dependence of their sedimentation curves was reproducible.These experimental results could not be explained by the simple theoretical consideration for stability of suspension. The satisfactory explanation is given only using the term of secondary minimum of interaction potential, i. e., the origin of coagulation was shifted from the ordinary primary minimum to the shallow secondary minimum at about 750 m of the particle diameter.

Zusammenfassung Der Einfluß des Sekundär-Minimum auf die Stabilität von Kolloiden wurde an seifenfreien Polystyrol-Latex-Suspensionen mit einem Durchmesser von 350 m bis 1400 m untersucht. Die kritische Flockungskonzentration (c. f. c.) und das Zeta-Potential bei c. f. c. wurde mit verschiedenen Salzen bestimmt.Der Wert von c. f. c. ändert sich mit der Teilchengröße.Ein weiterer wichtiger experimenteller Befund ist die vollständige Reversibilität der Flockung bei größeren Latices.Derartige Versuchsergebnisse können durch das Sekundär-Minimum befriedigend erklärt werden.

Synthese von Hydroxybenzylbenzimidazolen

Zusammenfassung Eine Reihe von Hydroxybenzylbenzimidazolen wurde durch Kondensation verschiedener aromatischer o-Diamine mit Brommandelsäuren unter Verwendung von 6n-HCl als Kondensationsmittel hergestellt. Für die Substituenten in der Benzolhälfte wurden die Stellungen 4(7)-, 5(6)-, 5,6- oder 4,6(5,7)- ge-wählt; der Phenylrest der Hydroxybenzylhälfte trägt ein Bromatom in der o- oder p-Stellung. Die Darstellung der o-Brom-mandelsäure wird beschrieben.

A series of hydroxybenzylbenzimidazoles has been synthesized by condensing various aromatic o-diamines with bromomandelic acids using 6 N hydrochloric acid as condensing agent. o-Phenylene diamines to yield benzimidazoles substituted at positions 4(7)-, 5(6)- or 4,6(5,7)- were selected; the phenyl group of the hydroxybenzyl moiety carries a bromo substituent in the o- or p-position. The preparation of o-bromomandelic acid is described in some detail.
