On-line textile quality control using optical Fourier transforms

Fourier transformation and spatial filtering offer the possibility of detecting structural defects in a fabric. In this paper a method based on an optical Fourier transform technique during the weaving process is described. Significant variations in the Fourier pattern occurring in the presence of defective fabric are recognised with a CCD sensor joined to an electronic hardware system performing a simple algorithm.

Control of crankshaft finish by scattering technique

The paper describes a new sensor dedicated to measure and check the surface quality of mechanical products. The results were obtained comparing the light scattered from two different ranges of angles by means of 16 photodiodes. The device is designed for obtaining valid data from curved surfaces as that of a crankshaft. Experimental measurements show that the ratio between scattered and reflected light intensity increases with the surface roughness. This device was developed for the off-tolerance detection of mechanical pieces in industrial production. Results of surface quality on crankshaft supplied by Renault were carried out.     

On the reactivity of nitrosoimidazoles with acids (the Cusmano–Ruccia reaction): a continuous source of new ring-into-ring interconversion

An extension of the ‘Cusmano–Ruccia’ reaction is reported. 6-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-methyl-5-nitrosoimidazo[2,1-b]oxazole by the action of hydrochloric acid gives 3-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-5-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole (13); presumably via ammonium ion, CO₂ and methanol elimination. The relevance of the nature of the atom of the B-ring linked to C-2 of the imidazole for the occurrence of the ring-into-ring interconversion has been once more confirmed.

Partitioning study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons between water and some selected water-insoluble phases

An investigation on the partitioning of naphthalene and phenanthrene between water and some water-insoluble phases has been carried out by Uv-vis-NIR spectrophotometry. The analysis of the experimental results emphasized the role of intermolecular interactions and structural features of the hosting phases as driving forces of the partitioning of these polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The critical comparison of the resulting distribution constants allowed to evaluate the potentials of some extracting phases to set up sensitive analytical methods and/or effective environment remediation technologies.
