Silochroms as adsorbents and supports in liquid chromatography

The use of macroporous silica gels, silochroms, with homogeneous geometrical structure as adsorbents and supports for liquid stationary phases in liquid chromatography is described.

The selectivity of separation and retention volumes of silochroms depend strongly on the degree of hydroxylation of the surface and on the nature of the mobile phase. In optimizing the parameters, rapid and complete separation of strongly polar isomers and biological active substances and drugs is obtained.

The dependence of retention volumes and column efficiency on the amount of liquid phase, covered on silochrom, has been investigated.     

Photophysical properties of oligo(2,3-thienyleneethynylene)s

Photophysical properties of oligo(2,3-thienyleneethynylene)s (nTE, n denotes the number of thiophene rings, n = 2, 3) in benzene were investigated using steady-state, time-resolved fluorescence, and transient absorption spectroscopies. For 2TE, generation of the radiative S2 and nonradiative S1 states was confirmed. Upon excitation, the S2 state was initially generated and deactivated to the S1 state within 10 ps. The S1 state exhibited the transient absorption band at 470 nm, of which the lifetime was estimated to be 5.3 ns. In the case of 3TE, on the other hand, it was revealed that the radiative S1 state with a transient absorption peak at 650 nm was generated upon excitation. The T1 states of nTE were generated from the S1 states. The quantum yields were estimated to be 0.52 and 0.54 for 2TE and 3TE, respectively. Extremely fast reactions in the higher triplet excited state were indicated for both 2TE and 3TE.     

Estimation of isoelectric points of human plasma proteins employing capillary isoelectric focusing and peptide isoelectric point markers

Synthetic UV-detectable peptide pI markers were used to estimate isoelectric point (pI) values of proteins separated by capillary isoelectric focusing (CIEF) followed by cathodic mobilization in the absence of denaturing agents. The pI calculation and quantitative analysis of purified proteins showed the feasibility of these peptides as pI markers and internal standards in CIEF separation of proteins. Estimation of pI values of major proteins in human plasma was performed using the peptide pI markers, and the values were compared with those previously obtained by gel isoelectric focusing (IEF). Sera of immunoglobulin G (IgG) myeloma patients, which showed characteristic peaks of myeloma IgG in their CIEF patterns, were also subjected to the analysis and the pI values of the myeloma proteins have been estimated.     

Occurrence of synergism between phospholipids and prostaglandins in extracts of some tissues of commercial squid

Modification of polybenzimidazole: Synthesis and thermal stability of poly(N1-methylbenzimidazole) and poly(N1,N3-dimethylbenzimidazolium) salt

Poly(N₁,N₃-dimethylbenzimidazolium) (PDMBI) salt and poly(N₁-methylbenzimidazole) (PMMBI) were synthesized by methylation of commercial polybenzimidazole [poly-2,2′-(m-phenylene)-5,5′-bibenzimidazole (PBI)]. First, the N-lithium salt of polybenzimidazole was formed by treating polybenzimidazole solution of 1-methyl-2-pyrolidinone (NMP) with lithium hydride at 80°C for 18 h. Ninety percent substitution of PMMBI was obtained by treating the N-lithium salt of PBI with equimolar ratio of iodomethane at room temperature. Upon addition of excess iodomethane to the lithium salt of PBI at 80°C, a polymer was formed that showed 100% substitution on the N₁ nitrogen and about 30% substitution of the methyl group on the N₃ nitrogen in the form of N₁,N₃-dimethylbenzimidazolium iodide salt [PDMBI (30%)]. The content of the benzimidazolium iodide salt was increased to about 90% by dissolving PDMBI (30%) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and re-treating with excess iodomethane at 80°C overnight. The modified PBI polymers were characterized by NMR and FTIR. The modified PBI differed in solubility from PBI. PMMBI could be easily dissolved in NMP and PDMBI in DMSO at room temperature. The solution of PDMBI could be mixed with water in all proportions without precipitation. PDMBI could be also dissolved directly in a mixture of DMSO and water (1 : 1). Typical polyelectrolyte behavior of viscosity was found in solution of PDMBI (30%) and PDMBI (90%) when DMSO and a mixture of DMSO and water were used as solvents. A salt effect on viscosity was also found in the mixed solvent solution. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the methyl group on the imidazole ring was unstable above 180°C under nitrogen. When PDMBI was heated under nitrogen, one of the methyl groups was lost with the counterion to result in a neutral PMMBI. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Radical reactions in the photodeccomposition of benzoyl peroxide in solid polycarbonate

Conclusions The decomposition of benzoyl peroxide in solid polycarbonate under UV irradiation is a monomolecular chain process.This process is accompanied by the intensive formation of colored products. After complete decomposition of the benzoyl peroxide, this process passes over to a new initiator stage for continued photoreaction of the polycarbonate. Coumarins of three species of the genusHaplophyllum

The results are given of an investigation of three species of the genusHaplophyllum: H. villosum, H. kowalenskyi, andH. tenue, fromwhich five substances of coumarin nature have been isolated. Of them, two substances (I and II) have been identified as scopoletin and lomatin isovalerate, respectively, while suitable structures have been established for the new compounds tenuidin, villosin, and tenudiol. It has been shown that the coumarin composition of the plants changes with the growth site.
