We report a unique macromolecule consisting of a rodlike helical polyisocyanide backbone with a narrow molecular weight distribution and rigid mesogenic chiral pendants linked via a flexible spacer that exhibits lyotropic nematic and latticelike new smectic (lat-Sm) liquid crystal phases at different concentrations. The unprecedented lat-Sm phase is associated with the smectic ordering of both the stiff polymer backbone and the rigid-rod side groups. A detailed investigation of the films using X-ray scattering and atomic force microscopy revealed a novel tilted smectic layer structure of the polymer backbone aligned perpendicular to the smectic layer of the mesogenic pendants, which arrange in an antiparallel overlapping interdigitated manner. 相似文献

Irradiation by health lamp (HL) light (280–320 nm) more efficiently induced cell killing and mutation in a radiation sensitive mutant (TW8) of Dictyostelium discoideum as compared with the parental wild-type strain (NC4). This light as well as a germicidal lamp-light (254 nm) produced pyrimidine dimers. The dimers were removed from DNA molecules by excision repair in NC4, but more slowly in TW8. It is suggested that pyrimidine dimers are the main DNA damage caused by HL light in D. discoideum , and that this results in cell killing and induced mutation. 相似文献

Insolubility of functional molecules caused by polymorphism sometimes poses limitations for their solution-based processing. Such a situation can also occur in the preparation processes of supramolecular polymers formed in a solution. An effective strategy to address this issue is to prepare amorphous solid states by introducing a “coformer” molecule capable of inhibiting the formation of an insoluble polymorph through co-aggregation. Herein, inspired by the coformer approach, we demonstrated a solubility enhancement of a barbiturate π-conjugated compound that can supramolecularly polymerize through six-membered hydrogen-bonded rosettes. Our newly synthesized supramolecular coformer molecule features a sterically demanding methyl group in the π-conjugated unit of the parent molecule. Although the parent molecule exhibits low solubility in nonpolar solvents due to the formation of a crystalline polymorph comprising a tape-like hydrogen-bonded array prior to the supramolecular polymerization, mixing with the coformer compound enhanced the solubility by inhibiting mesoscopic organization of the tapes. The two monomers were then co-polymerized into desired helicoidal supramolecular polymers through the formation of heteromeric rosettes. 相似文献

Various intermediates for the synthesis of erythronolide A, an aglycon of erythromycin A, are prepared from the corresponding seco‐acids using 2‐methyl‐6‐nitrobenzoic anhydride (MNBA) in the presence of 4‐(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) with or without triethylamine. The efficiency of the MNBA lactonization is assessed by studying this method and comparing the results with those of the other established macrocyclization protocols. It has been finally concluded that (i) the conformationally appropriate substrate for the monomeric cyclization gave the desired lactone in excellent yield under mild reaction conditions in the presence of MNBA and DMAP, (ii) the highly‐strained substrate for the cyclization also afforded the monomeric lactone in relatively good yield at 100°C in toluene, and (iii) the seco‐acid having stable linear conformation, which preferred dimerizing more than forming the monomeric lactone, provided the corresponding diolide in high yield with the constant ratio of the monomer to dimeric lactone (approximately 1/5). © 2009 The Japan Chemical Journal Forum and Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the unprecedented helix-sense controlled polymerization of enantiomerically pure phenyl isocyanides bearing an l- or d-alanine pendant with a long alkyl chain. The polymerization with an achiral nickel catalyst diastereoselectively proceeds, resulting in either a right- or left-handed helical polymer, whose helix-sense can be controlled by the polymerization solvent and temperature. Both the diastereomeric right- and left-handed helical polymers further self-assemble into lyotropic cholesteric liquid crystals with opposite twist-senses. Consequently, the macromolecular helicity and mesoscopic, supramolecular cholesteric twist can be controlled by the molecular chirality of the pendant of a single enantiomeric phenyl isocyanide through the polymerization under either kinetic or thermodynamic control assisted by hydrogen bonds. High-resolution atomic force microscopy revealed their helical conformations and enabled the determination of the helical sense. 相似文献

Summary: Protein chips are important tools for high-throughput analysis of biological events. We have developed a novel method to prepare a protein-based hydrogel, that is, a “Three-Dimensional Nano-structured Protein Hydrogel” (3-D NPH), which is composed of protein and polymer nano-particles. The 3-D NPH could be easily prepared by dispensing a protein and polymer mixture on a substrate. Surprisingly, gold particles conjugated with protein A diffused into the 3-D NPH which was made of mouse IgG through the pores. We have shown that the protein chips made with our 3-D NPH method has tremendously improved sensitivity in detecting protein-protein interactions compared with that of direct protein immobilization methods. 相似文献
