Idealized collision model for reactive scattering: Energy dependence of the cross section for CH3I + K → CH3 + Kl

The energy and temperature dependence of the reaction cross section for CH₃I + K → CH₃ + KI have been calculated using the reaction probability obtained from the idealized model of collinear, impulsive interaction between the atoms K and I and between the group CH₃ and I. Calculated values of the cross section agree very closely with the postmaximum data by Gersh and Berastein.     

Metastasis-suppressor KAI1/CD82 induces homotypic aggregation of human prostate cancer cells through Src-dependent pathway

To investigate the functional role of KAI1/CD82, a metastasis suppressor for human prostate cancer, in the regulation of homotypic cell adhesion, we transfected KAI1 cDNA into DU 145 human prostate cancer cells and established stable transfectant clones with high KAI1/CD82 expression. The KAI1 transfectant cells exhibited significantly increased homotypic cell aggregation in comparison with the control transfectant cells. This aggregation of the KAI1 transfectants was further enhanced upon exposure to anti-CD82 antibody, suggesting that KAI1/CD82 may be involved in the intracellular signaling for the cell adhesion. Among several signal pathway inhibitors tested, PP1, an inhibitor of Src family kinases, significantly suppressed homotypic aggregation of the KAI1 transfectant cells. Ligation of KAI1/CD82 with anti-CD82 antibody increased endogenous Src kinase activity of the KAI1 transfectant cells. When different types of src expression constructs were retransfected into the KAI1-transfected DU 145 cells, kinase-negative mutant src transfectant cells exhibited much lower homotypic aggregation than the mock cells transfected with an empty vector. Moreover, homotypic aggregation of the mutant src transfectant cells was not enhanced by KAI1/CD82 ligation with anti- CD82 antibody. These results suggest that Src mediates the intracellular signaling pathway of KAI1/CD82 for the induction of homotypic adhesion of human prostate cancer cells.     

Anomalies in the asymmetric hydroboration of olefins with the 11 adduct of (+)-α-pinene and BH3 · THF

The hydroboration of cis-2-butene and cis-3-hexene with pure diisopinocampheylborane (IPC₂BH) and monoisopinocampheylborane (IPCBH₂), both prepared from (+)-α-pinene, were studied. In contrast to IPC₂BH, which yielded R-(?)-2-butanol and R-(?)-3-hexanol in 98.4 and 94.5% optical purities, IPCBH₂ yielded S-(+)-2-butanol and S-(+)-3-hexanol in 23.6 and 19.7% optical purifies respectively. PMR examination of the methanolyzed products were utilized to establish the species present in the freshly prepared and aged $\text{1}\text{1}$ adduct from (+)-α-pinene and BH₃ · THF. The results confirm the interpretation previously advanced for the major differences realized in asymmetric hydroboration with the fresh and aged $\text{1}\text{1}$ adducts.     

Molecular structure and pseudopolymorphism of squamtin A from Annona squamosa

The cyclopeptide, squamtin A (1, formula: C₃₉H₆₀O₁₁N₈S), was found to crystallized in two pseudopolymorphisms, i.e. 1·(H₂O)_3.5 and 1·(H₂O)_3.9. The composition of the amino acids and their linkage sequences are the same. The main differences between the two kinds of crystals lie in the positions and occupancies of the water molecules, the positions of the sulfur atoms and the conformation of the side chains. The absolute configuration of 1 is established by X-ray analysis in combination with the Marfey's analysis of its hydrolysates.     

Analysis of bufadienolides in the Chinese drug ChanSu by high-performance liquid chromatography with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry

The qualitative analysis of bufadienolides in the Chinese drug ChanSu was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry (APCI-MS/MS). Bufadienolides are the major bioactive constituents of ChanSu, which is used to treat heart failure and cancer in traditional Chinese medicine. The APCI-MS fragmentation behavior of bufadienolides was studied. For bufadienolides with only hydroxyl substituents, the fragmentation was characterized by successive eliminations of H(2)O and CO molecules, and the profile of MS/MS product ions was correlated with the number of hydroxyl groups. If a C-16 acetoxyl group was present, the fragmentation of [M+H](+) ions was triggered by initial loss of 60 Da (HOAc). The elimination of CO was significant for bufadienolides with a 19-formyl group, and the 19-hydroxyl group could be characterized by the loss of 30 Da (HCHO). These fragmentation rules were applied to the identification of bufadienolides in a methanolic extract of ChanSu, which was separated on a C(18) column with gradient elution. A total of 35 bufadienolides were identified, including four new constituents. The method established here facilitated the convenient and rapid quality control of ChanSu crude drug and its pharmaceutical preparations.     

Symmetric Skorohod topology onn-variable functions and hierarchical Markov properties ofn-parameter processes

Summary We introduce a new Skorohod topology for functions of several variables. Since ann-variable function may be viewed as a one-variable function with values in the set of (n–1)-variable functions, this topology is defined by induction from the classical Skorohod topology for one-variable functions. This allows us to define the notion of completen-parameter symmetric Markov processes: Such processes are, for any 1pn, rawp-parameter Markov processes (in the sense of our previous paper [17]) with values in the space of (n–p)-variable functions. We prove, for these processes and their Bochner subordinates, a maximal inequality which implies the continuity of additive functionals associated with finite energy measures. We finally present several important examples.     

A solvothermal synthesis and the structure of K4Ag2Sn3S9 x 2KOH

A novel layered K(4)Ag(2)Sn(3)S(9) x 2KOH was synthesized solvothermally. A mixture of ethanol and HSCH(2)CH(SH)CH(2)OH was used for the synthesis. The HSCH(2)CH(SH)CH(2)OH plays an important role and appears to serve as a mineralizer for the solvothermal reaction. A layer comprises Sn(3)S(9)(6)(-) clusters linked by Ag(+) ions and possesses two types of 1D channels in which potassium ions are located. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic P2(1)/m space group [a = 7.8071(2) A, b = 27.3508(1) A, c = 10.5008(2) A, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 103.874(1) degrees, gamma = 90 degrees, Z = 4]. Its crystal structure, composition analysis, and IR are presented.
