Completely regioselective, highly stereoselective syntheses of cis-Bisfullerene

cis-Bisfullerene[60] adducts of 6,13-disubstituted pentacenes (R = Ph, 4'-hydroxymethylphenyl) are synthesized in 75% to 85% isolated yields under kinetically controlled Diels-Alder conditions. The cycloadditions are completely regioselective and highly stereoselective, with only traces of the diastereomeric trans-bisfullerene[60] adducts forming.     

Preparation of 1-ferrocenyl-2-methyl-1-propylamine,a highly effective chiral template in asymmetrically induced synthesis

The 1-ferrocenyl-2-methyl-1-propylamine (2a)is the most effective chiral template in asymmetrically induced peptide synthesis by stereoselective four component condensation (4CC). Two routes for the synthesis of this amine via its N,N-dimethyl derivative (12a) an described. One route involves the conversion of 12a into the corresponding azide 14a by treatment with methyl iodide/sodium azide in diglyme/water and subsequent reduction of the azide. The preferred other route consists of treating 12a with thioglycolic acid/formic acid to yield the carboxymethylmercapto derivative 9a and transformation of the latter into 2a with aqueous ammonia/ammonium chloride/mercuric chloride. Some related reactions are also discussed.     

13C-NMR-spektren stereoisomerer 1,4-dialkylspiro[4.5]decan-derivate

The ¹³C NMR spectra of a series of 7-substituted 1,4-dialkylspiro[4.5]decanes and of suitable reference compounds are assigned and the derived substituent effects upon the chemical shifts are discussed. In particular, consideration of γ and δ-effects allows the differentiation between 1,4-cis- and 1,4-trans-compounds. Furthermore, the (relative) configuration of the chiral spiroatom C-5 is determined.     

Ternary Fission

In this review paper, ternary fission is defined as the break-up of heavy nuclei into three fragments of approximately equal mass. This relatively new type of nuclear decay has been investigated intensively during the last decade. Muga has studied ternary fission induced by thermal neutrons in uranium. The results of his experiments are discussed in detail. Ternary fission can definitely be observed and studied in the interaction of heavy target elements with 39 MeV alpha particles, 20 GeV protons, and 300—400MeV argon ions. The ratio of binary-to-binary fission for uranium is approximately 10^?4: 100 in the interaction of 39 MeV alpha particles, approximately 0.1:100 for 20 GeV protons, and 3:100 for 400MeV argon ions. A theoretical model for the interpretation of ternary fission, the “cascade model”, is described. The paper concludes with a discussion of the possible connection of ternary fission with the production and decay of still undiscovered super-heavy elements (Z = 114).     

Electrode processes in the oxidation of tetrahydroisoquinoline derivatives

The electrochemical oxidation of the alkaloid laudanosine (Ia) to O-methylflavinantine (II) has been studied in acetonitrile solvent. Using cyclic voltammetry, rotating disc voltammetry and preparative electrolyses on several alkaloids, simple aliphatic amines and aromatic compounds, some aspects of the mechanism of this coupling reaction are elucidated. The first anodic wave for laudanosine at platinum has E_p=0.55 V vs. Ag/Ag⁺. The electrode rapidly becomes partially passivated at potentials above 0.5 V. This is due to a film which “dissolves” below 0.5 V, at a rate independent of the potential. It is shown that the reaction (Ia)→(II) proceeds at 0.5 V by initial oxidation of the amine moiety. If acids such as sodium bicarbonate are added to the anolyte the amine is protonated causing the first wave to disappear. Oxidation at 1.1 V under these acidic conditions produces the same product, but more rapidly and in significantly higher yield because electrode filming and side reactions resulting from the amine oxidation are abrogated.     

13C-NMR. Spectroscopy of naturally occurring substances. XXXII. Vincaleucoblastine and related alkaloids.

The total assignment of the ¹³C-shifts of the complex Vinica rosea L. alkaloids vincaleucoblastine, leurosidine and leurosine and of a synthetic isomer of the latter is presented. The structure of leurosidine is corrected and a tentative structure for the acid-catalyzed product of isomerization of leurosine is proposed.     

Infrared and Raman spectral interpretations of the ferroelectric phases of NaH3(SeO3)2 and NaD3(SeO3)2

The infrared and Raman spectra of NaH₃(SeO₃)₂ and NaD₃(SeO₃)₂ have been recorded from 24 to 300°K. The interpretation, assignments, and analysis of the spectral studies are presented on the paraelectric α phase (proton disordered), ferroelectric β phase (proton ordered) and ferroelectric γ phase (proton ordered). A discussion of a newly proposed proton-triggered phase transition mechanism and a possible origin of the hydrogen-bonded OH stretching region of KH₂PO₄-type ferroelectrics is given.     

A study of solar erythema radiation doses

Abstract —Using semi-empirical analytic formulas for the transmitted and scattered ultraviolet spectral irradiance at the ground (Green, A. E. S., T. Sawada and E. P. Shettle, Photochem. Photobiol. 19 , 251–259, 1974), we calculate erythema dose rates and daily erythema doses. Results are illustrated graphically, and for the purpose of photobiological applications are given in terms of approximate analytic forms, with parameters presented in tabular form. The relative erythema data assembled by W. W. Coblentz and R. Stair (U.S. Bureau of Standards J. Res. 12 , 13–14, 1934), as fit by an analytic form, is taken as a standard spectrum in our calculations. Other forms of erythema spectra are also compared.
