Synthesis and properties of furo[4,3,2-de][1]benzopyran

A new heterocycle, furo[4,3,2-de][1]benzopyran ( 2 ), was synthesized. A key step in the sequence was the allylic bromination of 3,4-dihydrofuro[4,3,2-de][1]benzopyran ( 8 ) to give 3-bromo-3,4-dihydrofuro[4,3,2-de][1]-benzopyran ( 10 ) using N-bromosuccinimide under irradiation and high dilution conditions. Bromide 10 was dealt with 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene to afford compound 2 . Several reactions of 2 were examined. Protonation of 2 in trifluoroacetic acid occurred at the 2-position to form a pyrylium ion 12 . Catalytic hydrogenation of 2 with palladium on charcoal proceeded smoothly to give 8 . Reduction of 2 by sodium and ethanol afforded 3-ethyl-4-hydroxybenzofuran ( 14 ). Electrophilic substitutions of 2 such as formylation, acetylation, and bromination, occurred easily at the 2-position. The above results show that compound 2 has both properties of benzofuran and 4-methylenepyran.     

Application of Automatic Chromatic Dispersion Compensation for Realization of All-Optical Network

We have studied the algorithm for the automatic chromatic dispersion compensation using bit error rate (BER) and Q-factor optimization for realization of dynamically reconfigurable all-optical network. We have made sure good performance using the compensation system by laboratory experiments.     

Stereoisomers of selenilimines: isolation and reactions of 9-phenylselenoxanthene-N-arylsulfonylselenilimines

The isolates cis- and trans-9phenylselenoxanthene-N-arylsulfonylselenilimines were not interconverted thermally. cis-Isomers were converted to trans-isomers by chloramine-T or -B in a fashion of S_N2 type substitution. cis-Isomers did not rearrange but trans-isomers rearranged thermally to 9-arylsulfonamido-9-phenylselenoxanthenes, whereas both isomers underwent the base-catalyzed intermolecular rearrangement.     

Acoustic characteristics of Ni–Nb–Zr–H glassy alloys by ultrasonic shear waves

The propagation characteristics of shear horizontally polarized (SH) waves passing through (Ni₄₂Nb₂₈Zr₃₀)_100–x H_x (x = 0–15.2) glassy alloys were investigated as a function of hydrogen content. With an increase in hydrogen content, the propagation time and main frequency of the receiving waves show increase and decrease, respectively, indicating expan‐ sion in average atomic distance which comes from solution of hydrogen. In sharp contrast to crystalline alloys, the decrease in damping ratio and the delay in phase with increasing hydrogen suggest a strong settlement of hydrogen into four‐coordination sites surrounded tetrahedrally by four Zr atoms and the resulting increase in dynamic elasticity, respectively. Synthesis and modification of new biodegradable copolymers: Serine/glycolic acid based copolymers

Serine/glycolic acid-based biodegradable polymers have been prepared by ring-opening homopolymerization of 3-(O-benzyl)-L -serinylmorpholine-2,5-dione, and ring-opening copolymerization of the morpholine-2,5-dione derivative and L -lactide/ϵ-caprolactone. The homopolymerization was carried out in the melt at 165°C for 3 min using stannous octanoate as the initiator and continued at lower reaction temperatures (130–150°C) for 48 h, using a molar ratio of monomer and initiator of 1000 yielded a polymer of M_n = 4000. The polymer prepared by homopolymerization of the morpholine-2,5-dione derivative was composed of alternating protected serine and glycolic acid residues. Random copolymers of serine and glycolic acid and L -lactic acid/ϵ-caprolactone were synthesized by copolymerization reaction of 3-(O-benzyl)-L -serinylmorpholine-2,5-dione and lactide or ϵ-caprolactone in the melt at 165°C for 3 min and further reaction at 130°C using stannous octanoate as an initiator. The polymers were deprotected and functionalized through the side chain hydroxyl group of serine residues with an acrylate moiety for applications in injectable drug delivery, cell encapsulation. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Simultaneous kinetic determination of secondary amines and their isomers by a spectrophotometric stopped-flow method based on the formation of dialkyldithiocarbamates

Secondary amines react with carbon disulphide to form stable dialkyldithiocarbamates at high pH in aqueous Triton X-100 solution. The formation rates of dimethyl-, diethyl-, di-n-propyl-, diisopropyl-, di-n-butyl- and diisobutyldithiocarbamates and pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate were measured by a stopped-flow spectrophotometric method. The reaction rates were a function of the pH of the solution and depended on the size and structure of the amines. The rate of isoalkylamines was far slower than that of the n-alkyl analogues. Individual concentrations of amines were determined in a mixture of di-n- and diisopropylamine and in a mixture of diiso- and di-n-butylamine.     

A generating function of higher-dimensional Apostol-Zagier sums and its reciprocity law

We introduce higher-dimensional Dedekind sums with a complex parameter z, generalizing Zagier's higher-dimensional Dedekind sums. The sums tend to Zagier's higher-dimensional Dedekind sums as z→∞. We show that the sums turn out to be generating functions of higher-dimensional Apostol-Zagier sums which are defined to be hybrids of Apostol's sums and Zagier's sums. We prove reciprocity law for the sums. The new reciprocity law includes reciprocity formulas for both Apostol and Zagier's sums as its special case. Furthermore, as its application we obtain relations between special values of Hurwitz zeta function and Bernoulli numbers, as well as new trigonometric identities.
