Higgs–Dilaton cosmology: Are there extra relativistic species?

Recent analyses of cosmological data suggest the presence of an extra relativistic component beyond the Standard Model content. The Higgs–Dilaton cosmological model predicts the existence of a massless particle – the dilaton – associated with the spontaneous symmetry breaking of scale invariance and undetectable by any accelerator experiment. Its ultrarelativistic character makes it a suitable candidate for contributing to the effective number of light degrees of freedom in the Universe. In this Letter we analyze the dilaton production at the (p)reheating stage right after inflation and conclude that no extra relativistic degrees of freedom beyond those already present in the Standard Model are expected within the simplest Higgs–Dilaton scenario. The elusive dilaton remains thus essentially undetectable by any particle physics experiment or cosmological observation.     

Complications in the Castagnoli-Cushman reaction: An unusual course of reaction between cyclic anhydrides and sterically hindered indolenines

Attempted reaction of indolenines (which represent rather sterically hindered cyclic imines) with a series of dicarboxylic acid anhydrides yielded no expected product, the Castagnoli-Cushman lactam. Instead, products presumably formed via N-acyliminium species trapping by a carboxylate anion. Among them, hydrolytically labile 2:2 adducts of an indolenine and a cyclic anhydride, containing a 16-membered cyclic core, are particularly intriguing. This result contradicts the recently reported successful Castagnoli-Cushman reaction of indolenines with homophthalic anhydride suggesting a mechanistic switch in the course of the reaction.     

Propagation of extremely short pulses in a graphene–boron nitride bilayer

In this study we investigate the propagation of extremely short optical pulses in a thin film formed by a graphene grown on a boron nitride substrate. Conduction electrons of the system are described on the basis of the long-wavelength effective Hamiltonian in the case of low temperatures; the electromagnetic field being taken into account within the framework of the classical Maxwell equations. The time evolution of the pulse?s shape for different speeds and maximum amplitudes of an extremely short pulse is analyzed.     

Room temperature MgI2-catalyzed Friedel–Crafts reaction between electron-rich (het)arenes and ethyl glyoxylate

Magnesium iodide-catalyzed addition of electron-rich (het)arenes to ethyl glyoxylate proceeds at room temperature with high chemoselectivity to afford ethyl 2-(het)aryl- 2-hydroxyacetates in yields up to 95%.
