A new sample holder for excitation of transverse sound waves

A simple non-resonant sample holder with inclined electrodes is described by means of which transverse sound waves in the GHz range are easily generated by an evaporated piezoelectric layer. Because of its small size it is especially well suited for cryostat applications.

Magnetic anisotropy and pressure dependence of the order temperature in in the Gd3 (FeTi)29 compound

In this work we report ac initial magnetic susceptibility under pressure, singular point detection (SPD) and linear thermal expansion measurements in the Gd₃(FeTi)₂₉ intermetallic compound. From these measurements we have determined the anisotropy field, the order temperature and its pressure dependence. The thermal exapansion measurement shows an Invar-like anomaly at the order temperature, T_C = 520 K, which decreases under increasing pressure with a slope of dT_C/dp = 2.7 K/kbar. As the Gd³⁺ ion is isotropic, no contribution to the anisotropy from the 4f sublattice is and low values of the anisotropy fields have been observed.     

Simultaneous single-shot imaging of OH and O2 using a two-wavelength excimer laser

A technique is described for simultaneous single-shot imaging of OH and O₂. Laser-induced fluorescence of both molecules is excited by a tunable KrF laser, which is operated simultaneously on two wavelengths. By using two CCD detectors with image intensifiers and suitable filters, separate images of OH and O₂ distributions in H₂/O₂ and hydrocarbon/air flames were obtained.

Let X₁, X₂,…, X_n be identically distributed possibly dependent random variables with finite pth absolute moment assumed without loss of generality to be equal to 1. Denote the order statistics by X_1:n, X_2:n,…, X_n:n. Bounds are derived for E(X_n:n) when it is assumed that the X_i's are (i) arbitrarily dependent and (ii) independent. The effect of assuming a symmetric common distribution for the X_i's is discussed. Analogous bounds are described for the expected range of the sample. Bounds on expectations of general linear combinations of order statistics are described in the independent case.
