Protective Effect of Ferulic Acid against Hydrogen Peroxide Induced Apoptosis in PC12 Cells

Ferulic Acid (FA) is a highly abundant phenolic phytochemical which is present in plant tissues. FA has biological effects on physiological and pathological processes due to its anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidative properties, however, the detailed mechanism(s) of function is poorly understood. We have identified FA as a molecule that inhibits apoptosis induced by hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) or actinomycin D (ActD) in rat pheochromocytoma, PC12 cell. We also found that FA reduces H₂O₂-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in PC12 cell, thereby acting as an anti-oxidant. Then, we analyzed FA-mediated signaling responses in rat pheochromocytoma, PC12 cells using antibody arrays for phosphokinase and apoptosis related proteins. This FA signaling pathway in PC12 cells includes inactivation of pro-apoptotic proteins, SMAC/Diablo and Bad. In addition, FA attenuates the cell injury by H₂O₂ through the inhibition of phosphorylation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). Importantly, we find that FA restores expression levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a key neuroprotective effector, in H₂O₂-treated PC12 cells. As a possible mechanism, FA increases BDNF by regulating microRNA-10b expression following H₂O₂ stimulation. Taken together, FA has broad biological effects as a neuroprotective modulator to regulate the expression of phosphokinases, apoptosis-related proteins and microRNAs against oxidative stress in PC12 cells.     

Chemical and genetic diversity of Ligularia virgaurea collected in northern Sichuan and adjacent areas of China. Isolation of 13 new compounds

Root chemicals and DNA sequences were analyzed for Ligularia virgaurea collected in the northern Sichuan Province and adjacent areas of China. Thirty-eight samples were found to contain five chemotypes, two known and three new ones. From samples of the new chemotypes, 13 new compounds were isolated, including 3 sesquiterpene dimers and some rearranged eremophilanes. The DNA sequences suggested that the chemotype differentiation had a genetic origin.     

Insulinomimetic Zn(II) complexes as evaluated by both glucose-uptake activity and inhibition of free fatty acids release in isolated rat adipocytes

We prepared 4 new Zn(II) complexes with Zn(O4), Zn(N(2)O(2)), and Zn(S2O2) coordination modes and evaluated their insulinomimetic activities in an in vitro study. The insulinomimetic activities of bis(pyrrole-2-carboxylato)zinc (Zn(pc)2), bis(alpha-furonic acidato)zinc (Zn(fa)2), bis(thiophene-2-carboxylato)zinc (Zn(tc)2), and bis(thiophene-2-acetato)zinc (Zn(ta)2) complexes were found to be higher than that of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4). Zn(ta)2 showed the highest insulinomimetic activity among the Zn(II) complexes because of its high lipophilicity.     

Effects of the molecular properties of mixed solvents on the elution of alkyl benzoates in RPLC.

The retention behavior and mechanism of methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, buthyl and isobuthyl benzoates have been studied at different eluent compositions of aqueous mixtures with water-soluble organic solvents (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, acetonitrile (AN), 1,4-dioxane and tetrahydrofuran (THF)) in RPLC. The retention of the solutes is discussed based on the solvent composition, solvent polarity (ETN value), preferential solvation, hydrogen bonding and solvent clusters of the eluents. The smaller ETN values and the larger preferential solvation of the mixed solvent eluted the solutes faster. The IR spectra of HDO suggested that the solvents, except for methanol and ethanol, break the hydrogen bonding between water molecules, resulting in fast elution of the solutes. Based upon the results, we chose an optimum solvent composition for the separation of benzoates and applied it to the determination of the benzoates in clove.     

Polymerization and photoinitiation behavior in the light-cured dental composite resins

The polymerization behavior and photoinitiation process in the visible light-cured dental composite resins were studied using ESR and IR spectroscopies. The concentration of methacryl propagating radical corresponded to the transmittance of irradiated light. While the radical was stable and long-lived in the cured resin, its concentration quickly decreased in the oral cavity due to the ventilation of atmospheric oxygen accompanied by respiration. Camphorquinone radical in the presence of tertiary amine easily initiated the radical polymerization. A decrease in monomer consumption was explained by the inhibition effect of oxygen in the photoinitiation process. Post-curing by the residual radical proceeded effectively in the deeper part of the resin.     

Preparation of poly(1,4-phenylene)s by electro-oxidative polymerization

The effect of substituents on the electropolymerization of benzene derivatives and the redox properrties of the corresponding polymers were determined using Brown's substituent constants (σ⁺). Electron-donating groups lower the oxidation potential by which increase in the current efficiency was observed. However, stabilization of the produced cation radicals by the electron-donating groups resulted in a decrease in the polymerization efficiency. The appropriate values of σ⁺ for the efficient polymerization ranged near ?1.5.     

Mössbauer study on a two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnet YFeMnO4

Magnetic ordering of YFeMnO₄ has been studied with Mössbauer spectroscopy in the temperature range between 4.2 K and 300 K on the conditions of gamma rays parallel to and perpendicular to thec-axis. It is revealed that the spin system orders like a Heisenberg spin system in a triangular antiferromagnet with an anisotropic axis parallel to thec-axis.
