Synthesis of di-branched heptasaccharide by one-pot glycosylation using seven independent building blocks

[reaction: see text] We describe an efficient synthesis of di-branched heptasaccharide 1 having phytoalexin elicitor activity in soybeans by one-pot glycosylation. The synthesis involves chemo- and regioselective sequential six-step glycosylations using seven independent building blocks and sequential removal of acyl- and benzyl ether-type protecting groups. The coupling of seven building blocks requires only four chemoselective activitable leaving groups of glycosyl donors. Both the glycosylation and deprotection reactions can be achieved utilizing a parallel manual synthesizer.     

Reactivities of Stable Rotamers: XLIV. Ring-Opening Reactions of 1-(9-Fluorenyl)-2-(2-methyl-2-oxiranyl)naphthalene Rotamers With Acids and the Structure of Oxiranes

X-ray crystallography of the ap-form of the 1-(9-fluorenyl)-2-(2-methyl-2-oxiranyl)naphthalene has revealed that the carbon atom of the oxirane which is connected to the naphthyl group in this compound is almost planar. The specific structural features of the epoxy ring in this compound are caused by sterical effects and by the presence of a -system in the immediate vicinity of the oxirane ring. Certain differences have been found also in reactivity of rotational isomers of 2-X-substituted 1-[1-(9-fluorenyl)-2-naphthyl]ethyl cations (X = O, S, Se). At X = O arose more deprotonation product from the -position of the oxygen than in reactions of sulfur and selenium-containing analogs. Reactions of epoxides with zinc chloride almost exclusively gave the corresponding aldehydes.     

An anthracene-based Cd fluorescent chemosensor with a 4,7-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-9-hydroxy-1,4,7-triazanonyl group as a highly selective chelator to Cd over Zn

We have developed a Cd²⁺ fluorescent chemosensor with high selectivity as well as sensitivity by tethering a 4,7-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-9-hydroxy-1,4,7-triazanonyl chelator to anthracene. This sensor features the ability to discriminate Cd²⁺ from Zn²⁺ to a high degree (K_dZn/K_dCd = 560) in a pH 7.2 buffer.     

Enhancement of Acid‐Catalyzed Esterification by the Addition of Base

General acid‐catalyzed reaction can be enhanced by the addition of base. Self‐catalyzed esterification of benzoic acid and octan‐1‐ol was enhanced by the addition of certain base such as imidazole. The rate of the esterification was accelerated as the concentration of imidazole increased. Trans‐esterification of 4‐nitrophenyl acetate was promoted in chloroform by the mixture of benzoic acid and imidazole, but not by benzoic acid or imidazole alone.

Simple system for evaluating retardation of liquid crystal cells using grating type liquid crystal polarization splitters

We propose a unique optical system for measuring the retardation of birefringent films using a pair of liquid crystal (LC) gratings; that is, the examined birefringent films are inserted between two LC gratings. Because the LC grating functions as a polarization beam splitter for circularly polarized light, the proposed system is optically equivalent to the measurement system using a pair of two circular polarizers. First, the polarization splitting performance of the LC grating is discussed. It is found that a sufficiently high voltage (such that the retardation is less than a half wavelength) has to be applied for the almost pure circularly polarized diffracted light. Next, the measurement of the retardation of a homogeneous LC cell as an examined birefringent film was demonstrated using the proposed method. The proposed method is revealed to have the same measurement performance as that of the conventional method using a pair of linear polarizers and has an advantage that there is no need for the optic axis of the test birefringent specimen to be set at a specific angle.     

Chiral Palladacycle Catalysts Generated on a Single‐Handed Helical Polymer Skeleton for Asymmetric Arylative Ring Opening of 1,4‐Epoxy‐1,4‐dihydronaphthalene

Post‐polymerization C? H activation of poly(quinoxaline‐2,3‐diyl)‐based helically chiral phosphine ligands (PQXphos) with palladium(II) acetate afforded chiral phosphapalladacycles quantitatively. In situ generated palladacycles exhibited enantioselectivities up to 94 % ee in the palladium‐catalyzed asymmetric ring‐opening arylation of 1,4‐epoxy‐1,4‐dihydronaphthalenes with arylboronic acids.     

Gold nanoparticles located at the interface of anatase/rutile TiO2 particles as active plasmonic photocatalysts for aerobic oxidation

Visible-light irradiation (λ > 450 nm) of gold nanoparticles loaded on a mixture of anatase/rutile TiO(2) particles (Degussa, P25) promotes efficient aerobic oxidation at room temperature. The photocatalytic activity critically depends on the catalyst architecture: Au particles with <5 nm diameter located at the interface of anatase/rutile TiO(2) particles behave as the active sites for reaction. This photocatalysis is promoted via plasmon activation of the Au particles by visible light followed by consecutive electron transfer in the Au/rutile/anatase contact site. The activated Au particles transfer their conduction electrons to rutile and then to adjacent anatase TiO(2). This catalyzes the oxidation of substrates by the positively charged Au particles along with reduction of O(2) by the conduction band electrons on the surface of anatase TiO(2). This plasmonic photocatalysis is successfully promoted by sunlight exposure and enables efficient and selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols at ambient temperature.
