Thermoanalytical study on the chlorination of hydrated aluminas and transition aluminas

The chlorination processes of four hydrated aluminas (bayerite, gibbsite, pseudoboehmite, boehmite) and four transition aluminas (η-,γ-,δ-,θ-Al₂O₃) were studied in the presence of active carbon by means of a gas-flow DTA apparatus. In the case of hydrated alumina systems three exothermic peaks appeared at about 230, 460 and 500°C or above, which corresponded to the formation of hydrogen chloride, white needle-like crystals and the chlorination of hydrated aluminas, respectively. On the other hand, in transition alumina systems, only one exothermic peak due to the chlorination of transition alumina appeared at 580–670°C. The relationship between the chlorination behavior and structure of transition aluminas was discussed.     

(6Li,d) reactions on 24Mg and 26Mg at 73 MeV

The ^{24, 26}Mg(⁶Li, d)^{28, 30}Si reactions have been studied at 73 MeV bombarding energy. The angular distributions were analyzed with exact finite-range distorted wave Born approximation calculations assuming a direct α-cluster transfer. Extracted spectroscopic strengths leading to low-lying levels of ²⁸Si and relative spectroscopic strengths between transitions to ²⁸Si and ³⁰Si ground states are consistent with those previously obtained by several α-transfer reactions. Many strongly populated levels have been observed at E_x ? 10 MeV for ²⁸Si. A marked similarity was found between the deuteron spectrum and the ²⁴Mg(α, α)²⁴Mg excitation function in this excitation energy region. A brief comparison of the present α-transfer results with previous two-nucleon transfer data leading to ^28,30Si is also presented.     

A tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) derivative tethered to a cis-PtCl2(amine)2 moiety: syntheses, spectroscopic properties, and visible-light-induced scission of DNA

A tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) derivative having two N-(3-ammoniopropyl)carbamoyl pendant units has been prepared and reacted with cis-PtCl2(DMSO)2 (DMSO = dimethyl sulfoxide) to give a heteronuclear Ru(II)Pt(II) dimer having a cis-Pt(II)Cl2(aliphatic amine)2 unit, [Ru(bpy)2(mu-bridge)PtCl2](PF6)2 (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, bridge = 4,4'-bis(N-(3-aminopropyl)carbamoyl)-2,2'-bipyridine). The ESI-TOF mass spectrum of the Ru(II)Pt(II) dimer shows a set of signals corresponding to {[Ru(bpy)2(mu-bridge)PtCl2](PF6)}(+) (m/z 1181.1). The MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer) luminescence intensity is enhanced upon the platination of two amine units, presumably due to the formation of a relatively rigid metallocycle. More interestingly, the luminescence intensity is further enhanced by the complexation of the Ru(II)Pt(II) dimer with either 5'-GMP (guanosine 5'-monophosphate disodium salt) or calf thymus DNA. Visible-light-induced scission of supercoiled pBR322 DNA is found to be efficiently enhanced in the presence of the title Ru(II)Pt(II) dimer.     

Pd/C-catalyzed chemoselective hydrogenation in the presence of diphenylsulfide

[Structure: see text] A Pd/C-catalyzed chemoselective hydrogenation using diphenylsulfide as a catalyst poison has been developed. This methodology selectively hydrogenates olefin and acetylene functionalities without hydrogenolysis of aromatic carbonyls and halogens, benzyl esters, and N-Cbz protective groups.     

Optical Haar Wavelet for Extracting Edge Features along Arbitrary Directions

A novel circular Haar wavelet (CHW), which is obtained by a radially distributed polarization state, is proposed. Optical wavelet transforms using the proposed CHW are implemented by computer simulations. The proposed CHW is shown to have remarkable features: (1) it is useful for detecting outlines of input images; (2) one polarization component is available for extracting an edge feature along a required direction; and (3) unlike the previously proposed CHW (Z. He and S. Sato: Opt. Lett. 19 (1994) 686), this one can be applied to a multi-resolution edge extraction (Y. Sheng, D. Roberge and H. H. Szu: Opt. Eng. 31 (1992) 1840).     

Coaxial holographic data storage without recording the dc components

A technique of recovering the data pages from Fourier holograms recorded without the dc components is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally by use of a coaxial holographic storage system. A reconstructed image is obtained by adding a phase-modulated dc component of the signal beam on reading. The bit error rate of the reconstructed image is comparable with that for the hologram recorded with the dc component as well. Since high intensities of the dc components are not recorded in this technique, the dynamic range of the recording media can be saved, which potentially contributes to increasing the number of multiplexed holograms.
