Beam profile monitor for annihilation cross section measurements of antiprotons at 100 keV

The ASACUSA (the Atomic Spectroscopy And Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons) collaboration is planning to measure the cross sections of antiproton annihilations at kinetic energy 100 keV on targets of various mass numbers (C,?Ni, Sn, and Pt) using the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) of CERN. No previous measurement exists in this region where the A-dependence of the cross section is expected to deviate from the A $^{\frac{2}{3}}$ (Batty et al, Nucl Phys A 689:721, 2001) as reported by the Obelix collaboration. A beam profile monitor based on secondary electron emission with a grid of electrode pads fabricated on an FR4-type glass-epoxy circuit board was developed for this measurement. The advantage of this kind of detector is that it is simple, lightweight, and low cost. It was used to measure the spatial profile of 100-ns-long beam pulses containing > 6 × 10⁴ antiprotons with an active area of 40?mm?× 40 mm and a spatial resolution of 4 mm.     

Synthesis and analgesic activity of novel heterocycles, [1]benzothiopyrano[3,4-b]pyrrole derivatives

In order to develop analgesic compounds possessing a sulfur atom in the alicyclic ring, novel cis-fused heterocycles, [1]benzothiopyrano[3,4-b]pyrrole derivatives (II) were synthesized via a unique cyclization reaction starting from 4-(4-methoxyphenylthio)-2-butanone (1) or 6-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-2H-1-benzothiopyran-4-one (7). The analgesic effects of benzothiopyranopyrroles (16, 18) were measured by means of the writhing test. The phenolic derivative 18 completely inhibited the appearance of writhing at the dose of 50 mg/kg, but the methoxy derivative 16 had no analgesic effect.     

Synthesis of polyester dendrimers and dendrons starting from Michael reaction of acrylates with 3-hydroxyacetophenone

A new AB₂ type building block for synthesis of dendritic compounds is made starting from Michael addition of 2 equiv of 3-hydroxyacetophenone to acrylate, followed by decarboxylation and deprotection of either carboxyl or hydroxyl protecting groups. [G1]-[G4] dendrons and [G2] dendrimer were synthesized by the reiterative [hydrogenolysis then DCC/DPTS coupling] sequence using a combination of convergent and divergent growth methods.     

Selective cross-catenation of Pd(II) and Pt(II) coordination rings

The reversible cross-catenation of two different coordination rings (Pd(II)- and Pt(II)-linked rings) has been achieved by using the labile nature of the Pd-N interaction and efficient hydrophobic contact between the rings.
