Studies on sesquiterpenoids—III Some derivatives of guaiol

When guaiol was dehydrated with such reagents as thionyl chloride-pyridine, phosphorus oxychloride-pyridine or potassium bisulphate, the isopropenyl derivative (IIa) was always obtained as a main product, together with a small amount of IIb. Catalytic reduction of IIa in alkaline media afforded -dihydroguaiene (V), while in neutral or acid media it gave a mixture of V and its double bond isomer (VI).     

121Sb Mössbauer spectroscopic study on electronic states of pentavalent organoantimony compounds

A systematic study of pentavalent organoantimony compounds, (RC₆H₄)₃SbX₂ (R=H,p-CH₃,p-F,p-Cl,p-CF₃,o-CH₃; X=Cl, Br), was carried out to examine the effect on Mössbauer parameters of the substituent on the aromatic ring. The Mössbauer parameters obtained in polycrystalline form reflected the steric effect caused by the position of the substituent on the aromatic ring. On the other hand, measurements in frozen organic solutions revealed that the electron density and electric field gradient at and around the antimony nucleus became smaller when the more electron-attractive group was introduced into thepara position.     

Direct observation of split-off exciton and phonon structures in absorption spectrum of silicon

The split-off band exciton of silicon has been observed in the absorption spectrum by using a wavelength modulation technique. The spin-orbit splitting of the valence band is determined to be 44.1 ± 0.3 meV at 1.8 °K. The structures associated with some two-phonon indirect transitions have also been observed in the absorption spectrum.     

Fringe formula for projection type moiré topography

The rays that form moiré fringes in projection type moiré topography are discussed. It is shown that the nodal-ray formula conventionally used in projection type moiré topography gives erroneous results for an object located close to the lenses. An alternative formula based on principal rays is proposed and compared with the conventional nodal ray formula. The principal ray formula proposed can be applied to a wide class of optical systems, including a telecentric system.
