Through layer-by-layer adsorption (LBL) technique, the positively charged multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and negatively charged graphene multilayer film were formed on graphite-poly(diallyldimethylammoniumchloride)-polystyrenesulphonate (Gr/PDDA/PSS) modified electrode. Due to large surface area and remarkable electrocatalytic properties of MWCNTs and graphene, the Gr/(PDDA/PSS-[MWCNTs-NH 3 + -graphene-COO?]5) electrode exhibits potent electrocatalytic activity towards the electro-oxidation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). A substantial decrease in the overpotential was observed at modified electrode, and the electrode showed high sensitivity to the electrocatalytic oxidation of NADH. The modified electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The diffusion coefficient was calculated by chronocoulometry. Chronoamperometric studies showed the linear relationship between oxidation peak current and the concentration of NADH in the range 25–250?μM (R?=?0.999) with the detection limit of 0.1?μM (S/N?=?3). Further, dopamine, uric acid, acetaminophen and hydrogen peroxide do not interfere in the detection of NADH. The ability of MWCNTs and graphene to promote the electron transfer between NADH and the electrode exhibits a promising biocompatible platform for development of dehydrogenase-based amperometric biosensors. The ability of three species of birds to discriminate among selected harmonic complexes with fundamental frequencies varying from 50 to 1000 Hz was examined in behavioral experiments. The stimuli were synthetic harmonic complexes with waveform shapes altered by component phase selection, holding spectral and intensive information constant. Birds were able to discriminate between waveforms with randomly selected component phases and those with all components in cosine phase, as well as between positive and negative Schroeder-phase waveforms with harmonic periods as short as 1-2 ms. By contrast, human listeners are unable to make these discriminations at periods less than about 3-4 ms. Electrophysiological measures, including cochlear microphonic and compound action potential measurements to the same stimuli used in behavioral tests, showed differences between birds and gerbils paralleling, but not completely accounting for, the psychophysical differences observed between birds and humans. It appears from these data that birds can hear the fine temporal structure in complex waveforms over very short periods. These data show birds are capable of more precise temporal resolution for complex sounds than is observed in humans and perhaps other mammals. Physiological data further show that at least part of the mechanisms underlying this high temporal resolving power resides at the peripheral level of the avian auditory system. 相似文献

Sound localization allows humans and animals to determine the direction of objects to seek or avoid and indicates the appropriate position to direct visual attention. Interaural time differences (ITDs) and interaural level differences (ILDs) are two primary cues that humans use to localize or lateralize sound sources. There is limited information about behavioral cue sensitivity in animals, especially animals with poor sound localization acuity and small heads, like budgerigars. ITD and ILD thresholds were measured behaviorally in dichotically listening budgerigars equipped with headphones in an identification task. Budgerigars were less sensitive than humans and cats, and more similar to rabbits, barn owls, and monkeys, in their abilities to lateralize dichotic signals. Threshold ITDs were relatively constant for pure tones below 4 kHz, and were immeasurable at higher frequencies. Threshold ILDs were relatively constant over a wide range of frequencies, similar to humans. Thresholds in both experiments were best for broadband noise stimuli. These lateralization results are generally consistent with the free field localization abilities of these birds, and add support to the idea that budgerigars may be able to enhance their cues to directional hearing (e.g., via connected interaural pathways) beyond what would be expected based on head size. 相似文献
