The possibility of making high-contact-angle, rough surfaces from low-contact-angle materials has recently been suggested and demonstrated. A thermodynamic analysis of this possibility in terms of feasibility and stability is presented. It turns out that only roughness topographies that conform to a feasibility condition which is developed in the present paper can support this phenomenon. Even under conditions that support the phenomenon, the high-contact-angle state may not be stable, and transition from the heterogeneous (Cassie-Baxter) wetting regime to the homogeneous (Wenzel) regime with a lower contact angle may occur. In addition, it is suggested to use the general terms hygrophilic and hygrophobic (based on the Greek prefix hygro- that means liquid) to describe low- and high-contact-angle surfaces, respectively.  相似文献

Protein phosphorylation is a type of posttranslational modification which plays an important role in cell regulation and signal transduction. Because of its biological relevance, a considerable amount of interest has been paid to the development of efficient techniques for phosphopeptide analysis. Although advances in MS control have enabled the high-throughput discovery of proteins from limited amounts of sample, automated selection of MS/MS precursor ions based on intensity alone can significantly hamper the detection of low-abundance phosphopeptides. On the basis of the observation that the introduction of a phosphate moiety does not dramatically change peptide retention time in reverse-phase chromatography, phosphopeptide specific MS/MS fragmentation attempts based on LC retention time and m/z were evaluated using a standard protein mixture, then using in vitro phosphorylated myelin basic protein. Results indicated that the majority (98%) of phosphopeptides identified eluted within a +/- 4-min window of the predicted LC elution time. While studies presented here are primarily proof of concept in nature, data suggest that the use of LC retention time prediction could be a valuable constraint for the identification of phosphopeptides within a set of off-line LC deposited sample spots. It is expected that the development of these methods will not only permit the targeted identification of protein phosphorylation sites but also allow the in-depth analysis of the dynamic events linked to the posttranslational modification.  相似文献

Chiral recognition of enantiomers by host compounds is one of the most challenging topics in modern host-guest chemistry. Amongst the well-established methods, mass spectrometry (MS) is increasingly used nowadays, due to its low detection limit, short analysis time, and suitability for analyzing mixtures and for studying chiral effects in the gas phase. The development of electrospray-ionization (ESI) techniques provides an invaluable tool to study, in the gas phase, diastereoisomeric complex ions prepared from enantiomer ions and a chiral selector. This paper reports on an ESIMS and ESIMSMS study of the molecular mechanisms that intervene in the chiral-recognition phenomena observed between amino acids and a chiral crown ether. The modified crown ether, namely (+)-([18]crown-6)-2,3,11,12-tetracarboxylic acid, is used as the chiral selector when covalently bound on a stationary phase in liquid chromatography. This study was stimulated by the fact that, except with threonine and proline, consistent elution orders were observed, which indicates that the D enantiomers interact more strongly with the chiral selector than the L enantiomers. For proline, the lack of a primary amino group is likely to be responsible for the nonresolution of the two forms, whereas the second stereogenic center on threonine could explain the reversed elution order. In light of those observations, we performed mass spectrometry experiments to understand more deeply the enantiomeric recognition phenomena, both in solution by the enantiomer-labeled guest method and in the gas phase by gas-phase ligand-exchange ion/molecule reactions. The results have been further supported by quantum chemical calculations. One of the most interesting features of this work is the identification of a nonspecific interaction between proline and the crown ether upon ESIMS analysis.  相似文献

Monodisperse spherical hollow nanoparticles of mesoporous silica featuring mesopores with a radial orientation in the silica shell were synthesized via a dual-templating method. Specifically designed polystyrene latexes with anionic or cationic surface charges acted as the core templates, while cetyltrimethylammonium bromide served as a co-template to structure the mesopore formation during tetraethoxysilane hydrolysis/condensation. The particles were well-separated and presented homogeneous mesoporous silica shells. Average particle diameters were less than 200 nm, and the particles displayed high values of specific surface area and pore volume. The shell thickness and the hollow core diameter could be tuned independently while the radial pore structure was preserved. A detailed analysis of the nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms proved that the central cavity was completely isolated from the external medium, that is, only accessible through the radial mesopores of the shell. Consequently, our particles gather the advantages of a well-defined structure, straight penetrating channels across the silica shell, and a high accessible porous volume of the central core. These properties make them far better candidates than simple mesoporous particles for any storage and/or controlled release applications.  相似文献

We propose a novel evanescent wave scattering imaging method using an objective-type total internal reflection system to image and track single gold nanoparticles (GNPs) in solution. In this imaging system, only a millimeter-scale hole is employed to efficiently separate GNPs scattering light from the background reflected beam. The detailed experimental realization of the imaging system was discussed, and the effect of the hole size on imaging was investigated. We observed that the hole diameters from 2.5 to 4 mm are suitable to perform the scattering imaging by adjusting the incidence angle. The technology was successfully applied to track single gold nanoparticles in solution and on live cell membrane via the anti-epidermal growth factor receptor antibody. Compared to total internal fluorescence microscopy, the resonance light scattering detection has no photobleaching or blinking inherent to fluorescent dyes and quantum dots. Compared to conventional dark-field microscopy, the evanescent wave illumination can be conveniently applied to study membrane dynamics in living cells. Additionally, the objective-based configuration provides a free space above the coverslip, and allows imaging and concomitant manipulation of live cells in culture by microinjection, patch-clamping, AFM and other techniques.  相似文献

The colloidal behavior of eight synthetic procyanidins (three monomers, four dimers, and a trimer) has been investigated in water or in a winelike medium using DOSY NMR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. Different behavior was observed for monomers and oligomers. Monomers self-associate with a high affinity constant (37-53 M(-1)) to form micelles at low cmc (critical micelle concentration) values (1-5 g.L(-1)). These micelles undergo a time-dependent coalescence process to form hazes and precipitates. As for dimers and the trimer, self-association also occurs but with a lower affinity (approximately 6 M(-1)) and at higher cmc values (10-20 g.L(-1)) to form small micelles (<5 nm) that remain stable throughout the experiment. The presence of 10% ethanol does not significantly affect the self-association constant for monomers and oligomers but increases their cmc values by approximately 50% and decreases the micelle size by a factor 2. However, the presence of 20 mM NaCl appears to negate the effect of ethanol. This study helps to clarify the role of procyanidin monomers versus oligomers in wine turbidity and demonstrates that procyanidin oligomers are fully available to interact with saliva proteins.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Here, we present the effect of copper (II) oxide nanoparticles (nCuO) on dielectric and electro-optical parameters of a newly prepared ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture, namely W302. The FLC mixture, comprising of pyrimidine compounds, was characterised through dielectric spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM) and other electro-optical methods. The material parameters such as spontaneous polarisation, rotational viscosity, response time and tilt angle of W302 were found to be 14 nC/cm2, 240 mPa.s, 150 µs and 28?, respectively. The phase transition temperatures of W302 were observed through DSC and further confirmed by the dependence of dielectric loss factor in homogeneously aligned FLC sample with temperature. We also demonstrate the observance of a low-frequency dielectric relaxation mode due to the unwinding of the helix, called as partially unwound helical mode (p-UHM) along with Goldstone mode. The behaviour of p-UHM has been systematically studied with temperature and applied bias field. Further, dispersion of nCuO into host W302 has shown a significant increase in dielectric permittivity. Also, the p-UHM relaxation peak in the dielectric regime has disappeared with the incorporation of nCuO. These studies would be useful to fabricate better electro-optical devices for display, switching and beam steering applications. The formulation and characterization of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture W302 composed of pyrimidine compounds is presented. Then, we observed the effect of copper (II) oxide nanoparticles (nCuO) on dielectric and electro-optical parameters of a newly prepared and characterized FLC mixture.  相似文献

Abstract

In this study, a novel series of benzothiazole-thiazolylhydrazine (3a–3i) was synthesized and their structures were characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR spectrometry, and mass spectroscopy. These compounds were evaluated as inhibitors of type A and type B monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzymes. The most active compound 3b (2-((2-(2-(4-(4-Nitrophenyl)thiazol-2-yl)hydrazineylidene)-2-phenylethyl)thio)benzothiazole) showed strong inhibitory activity at hMAO-A (IC50 of 0.095?±?0.004?µM). Furthermore, compound 3i (2-((2-(2-(4-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)thiazol-2-yl)hydrazineylidene)-2-phenylethyl)thio)benzothiazole) showed significant inhibition profile on hMAO-A with the IC50 values 0.141?±?0.006?µM.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to conduct a comparative evaluation of some biological properties of methanol and water extracts of leaves of five Juniperus taxa growing in Turkey: J. communis L. var. communis (Jcc), J. communis L. var. saxatilis Pall. (Jcs), J. drupacea Labill. (Jd), J. oxycedrus L. subsp. oxycedrus (Joo), J. oxycedrus L. subsp. macrocarpa (Sibth. & Sm.) Ball. (Jom). The antioxidant properties were examined in vitro; both in the DPPH and in the reducing power tests, Joo methanol extract resulted the most active (IC50?=?0.09?±?0.01mg/mL and ASE/mL?=?2.56?±?0.06). In the TBA assay, Jcs methanol extract exhibited the highest activity (IC50?=?4.39?±?0.47?μg/mL). The extracts displayed bacteriostatic activity against Staphylococcus aureus, and Jd methanol extract resulted the most effective (MIC?=?19.53?μg/mL); no effect on the S. aureus biofilm formation was observed. The extracts resulted non-toxic in the Artemia salina lethality bioassay. Finally, the phenolic profile of the methanol extracts was characterized by HPLC-PDA/ESI-MS.  相似文献
