Characterization and ethylene adsorption of natural and modified clinoptilolites

The ethylene adsorption of Turkey clinoptilolite-rich tuff from Gordes and Bigadic region of western of Anatolia and their exchanged forms (K⁺, Na⁺ and Ca²⁺) were investigated. The clinoptilolite samples were characterized using XRD, TG-DTA and nitrogen adsorption methods. Adsorption isotherms for ethylene on natural and modified forms of both adsorbents at 277 K and 293 K were obtained at pressures up to 38 kPa. Uptake of ethylene increased as Na-CLN < Ca-CLN < K-CLN < Natural CLN for Gordes zeolite at 277 K, 293 K and for Bigadic zeolite at 277 K. For Bigadic zeolites at 293 K, uptake of ethylene increased in the order Ca-CLN < Na-CLN < K-CLN < Natural CLN. It was found that ethylene adsorption capacity of Bigadic clinoptilolite samples was much greater than Gordes clinoptilolite samples except K⁺ modified forms at both temperatures. These results show that both natural clinoptilolites have a considerable potential for the removal of ethylene.     

DNA multiblock copolymers

Single stranded (ss) DNA block copolymers were applied to synthesize DNA multiblock architectures by hybridization; these polymeric bioorganic hybrids were characterized by gel electrophoresis and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry.     

The Refined Composite Downsampling Permutation Entropy Is a Relevant Tool in the Muscle Fatigue Study Using sEMG Signals

Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a valuable technique that helps provide functional and structural information about the electric activity of muscles. As sEMG measures output of complex living systems characterized by multiscale and nonlinear behaviors, Multiscale Permutation Entropy (MPE) is a suitable tool for capturing useful information from the ordinal patterns of sEMG time series. In a previous work, a theoretical comparison in terms of bias and variance of two MPE variants—namely, the refined composite MPE (rcMPE) and the refined composite downsampling (rcDPE), was addressed. In the current paper, we assess the superiority of rcDPE over MPE and rcMPE, when applied to real sEMG signals. Moreover, we demonstrate the capacity of rcDPE in quantifying fatigue levels by using sEMG data recorded during a fatiguing exercise. The processing of four consecutive temporal segments, during biceps brachii exercise maintained at 70% of maximal voluntary contraction until exhaustion, shows that the 10th-scale of rcDPE was capable of better differentiation of the fatigue segments. This scale actually brings the raw sEMG data, initially sampled at 10 kHz, to the specific 0–500 Hz sEMG spectral band of interest, which finally reveals the inner complexity of the data. This study promotes good practices in the use of MPE complexity measures on real data.     

Enthalpies of mixing of liquid systems for lead-free soldering: Cu–Sb–Sn system

Using two different types of high temperature drop calorimeters, partial and integral enthalpies of mixing of liquid alloys were determined in the ternary Cu–Sb–Sn system. The system was investigated along four sections at 1100 K. Experimental data were used to find ternary interaction parameters by applying the Redlich–Kister–Muggianu model for substitutional solutions, and a full set of parameters describing the concentration dependence of the enthalpy of mixing was derived. From these, the isoenthalpy curves were constructed for 1100 K. The entire system shows exothermic enthalpy of mixing at the given temperature.     

Influence of the exchangeable cations on SO<Subscript>2</Subscript> adsorption capacities of clinoptilolite-rich natural zeolite

The sulfur dioxide adsorption on clinoptilolite-rich tuff from Bigadiç region of Western of Turkey and its modified forms (Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺) have been studied at 273 K and 293 K up to 100 kPa. The structural properties of clinoptilolites were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). The quantitative XRD analysis demonstrated that the Natural-B sample is mainly constituted by clinoptilolite (80–85%) with minor contents of quartz (7–8%), feldspar (5–6%) and mica-illit (4–5%). It was found out that the adsorption capacity and the affinity of SO₂ with clinoptilolite samples depended mainly on the type of exchanged cations and decreased as Na-B > K-B > Mg-B > Natural-B > Ca-B for both temperature. These results show that clinoptilolite-rich zeolites are considered potentially good adsorbents for SO₂ removal.     

Stereoselective hydrosilylation of enals and enones catalysed by palladium nanoparticles

A highly versatile and efficient hydrosilylation method by palladium nanoparticle catalysis allows the direct and chemoselective synthesis of 1) enolsilanes of high isomeric purity, 2) saturated aldehydes or ketones, or 3) the corresponding saturated acetals from α,β-unsaturated aldehydes or ketones. The choice of the product is determined by simply switching the solvent from THF to mixtures of THF/water or THF/alcohol.     

An investigation of frequently consumed edible oils in Turkey in terms of omega fatty acids

The fatty acid profiles of frequently consumed oils and crops cultivated in Turkey were investigated in regard to omega fatty acids. Analyses were carried out on commercially sold oils, sunflower, olive, and fish oils, and oils extracted from fatty seeds of hazelnut, walnut, olive, sunflower, poppy, sesame, and pumpkin, and butter produced in Turkey. Hazelnut and olive oils were found to be rich in omega-9 (oleic acid 18:1), walnut, poppy seed, sesame, and pumpkin seed were rich in omega-6 (linoleic acid 18:2), and butter was rich in short chain fatty acids and omega-9. Fish oil, from mackerel, was the richest in omega-3 fatty acids and fatty acid diversity. There were some alterations between commercially sold oils and oils extracted from seeds in regard to fatty acid percentages and variety.     

Synthesis of DNA block copolymers with extended nucleic acid segments by enzymatic ligation: cut and paste large hybrid architectures

Ultra-high molecular weight DNA/polymer hybrid materials were prepared employing molecular biology techniques. Nucleic acid restriction and ligation enzymes were used to generate linear DNA di- and triblock copolymers that contain up to thousands of base pairs in the DNA segments.
