Effect of Alkali Metal Cation on Copolymerization of Acrylamide with Salts of 2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic Acid in Aqueous Solutions

The kinetics of radical copolymerization of acrylamide with lithium, sodium, and potassium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonates in concentrated aqueous solutions in the presence of potassium persulfate as initiating agent at pH 9 and 50°C was studied by dilatometry.     

The application of a vehicle routing model to a waste-collection problem: two case studies

In this paper we suggest a unique model for estimating the operating cost of each of three waste-collection systems. Under the traditional system, which is widely used, waste is typically collected in plastic bags and a three-man crew is needed on each vehicle. The other two systems require a one-man crew for vehicle collecting street containers. The side-loader system with fixed body automatically empties street containers into the vehicle body and empties the load at the disposal site. The side-loader system with demountable body allows the separation of the waste collection phase from transport to the disposal site, since the vehicle body can be demounted. We also present two case studies and show how the estimation of operating costs is a critical issue in decisions regarding the type of system to be used for waste collection.     

Possibilities of Production and Use of Rubber-Bitumen Compounds

Procedures are discussed for production of rubber-bitumen compounds based on spent rubber items. A possibility of using these binders for paving is studied experimentally.     

The Markov power moment problem in problems of controllability and frequency extinguishing for the wave equation on a half-axis

In this paper necessary and sufficient conditions of null-controllability and approximate null-controllability are obtained for the wave equation on a half-axis. Controls solving these problems are found explicitly. Moreover, bang-bang controls solving the approximate null-controllability problem are constructed with the aid of solutions of a frequency extinguishing problem in the restricted band (−a,a) for this equation and the Markov power moment problem.     

Non-linear Stability of Modulated Fronts¶for the Swift–Hohenberg Equation

We consider front solutions of the Swift–Hohenberg equation ∂ _t u= -(1+ ∂ _x ²)² u + ɛ² u -u ³. These are traveling waves which leave in their wake a periodic pattern in the laboratory frame. Using renormalization techniques and a decomposition into Bloch waves, we show the non-linear stability of these solutions. It turns out that this problem is closely related to the question of stability of the trivial solution for the model problem ∂ _t u(x,t) = ∂ _x ² u (x,t)+(1+tanh(x-ct))u(x,t)+u(x,t) ^p with p>3. In particular, we show that the instability of the perturbation ahead of the front is entirely compensated by a diffusive stabilization which sets in once the perturbation has hit the bulk behind the front. On c‐Bhaskar Rao designs with block size 4

Several new families of c‐Bhaskar Rao designs with block size 4 are constructed. The necessary conditions for the existence of a c‐BRD (υ,4,λ) are that: (1)λ_min=?λ/3 ≤ c ≤ λ and (2a) c≡λ (mod 2), if υ > 4 or (2b) c≡ λ (mod 4), if υ = 4 or (2c) c≠ λ ? 2, if υ = 5. It is proved that these conditions are necessary, and are sufficient for most pairs of c and λ; in particular, they are sufficient whenever λ?c ≠ 2 for c > 0 and whenever c ? λ_min≠ 2 for c < 0. For c < 0, the necessary conditions are sufficient for υ> 101; for the classic Bhaskar Rao designs, i.e., c = 0, we show the necessary conditions are sufficient with the possible exception of 0‐BRD (υ,4,2)'s for υ≡ 4 (mod 6). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. On the Density-Density Critical Indices¶in Interacting Fermi Systems

The behaviour of correlation functions of d=1$ interacting fermionic systems is determined by a small number of critical indices. We prove that one of them is exactly zero. As a consequence, the behavior of the Fourier transform of the density-density correlation at zero momentum is qualitatively unaffected by the interaction, contrary to what happens at , if is the Fermi momentum. If the Riemann–Christoffel tensor associated with a field of class $\text{C}{}^2$ of positive definite symmetric matrices of order three vanishes in a connected and simply connected open subset $\text{Ω?}\text{R}{}^3$, then this field is the metric tensor field associated with a deformation of class $\text{C}{}^3$ of the set $\text{Ω}$, uniquely determined up to isometries of $\text{R}{}^3$. Interface-related effects on confined excitons in GaAs/AlxGa1−xAs single quantum wells

Confined excitons in non-abrupt GaAs/Al_xGa_1−xAs single quantum wells are studied. The graded interfaces are described taking into account fluctuations in their thickness a and positioning with respect to the abrupt interface picture. Numerical results for confined (0,0),(1,1) and (0,2) excitons in GaAs/Al_0.3Ga_0.7As quantum wells show that while the interfacial fluctuations produce small changes (<0.5 meV) in the exciton binding energies, the confined exciton energies can be red- or blue-shifted as much as 25 meV for wells with mean width of 50 Å and 2 ML wide interfaces.
