Enantioselective total synthesis of the potent anti-HIV nucleoside EFdA

A concise enantioselective total synthesis of 4'-ethynyl-2-fluoro-2'-deoxyadenosine (EFdA), an extremely potent anti-HIV agent, has been accomplished from (R)-glyceraldehyde acetonide in 18% overall yield by a 12-step sequence involving a highly diastereoselective ethynylation of an α-alkoxy ketone intermediate.     

Microbial conversion of curcumin into colorless hydroderivatives by the endophytic fungus Diaporthe sp. associated with Curcuma longa

We investigated the microbial conversion of curcumin (1) using endophytic fungi associated with the rhizome of Curcuma longa (Zingiberaceae). We found that Diaporthe sp., an endophytic filamentous fungus, converts curcumin (1) into four colorless derivatives, namely (3R,5R)-tetrahydrocurcumin (2), a novel (3R,5S)-hexahydrocurcumin (3) named neohexahydrocurcumin, (3S,5S)-octahydrocurcumin (4) and meso-octahydrocurcumin (5).     

Monitoring the aggregation processes of amyloid-β using a spin-labeled, fluorescent nitroxyl radical

Amyloid nitroxyl radical (nitroxide) ligands were used to detect amyloid-β fibrils, the main constituents of senile plaques in Alzheimer's disease, using anisotropic ESR spectra, and were found to affect the aggregation process due to the radical functionality. These compounds have great potential as novel and multifunctional probes, combining spin labels, spin probes, and fluorescence probes.     

Highly efficient enzymatic synthesis of 3'-deoxyapionucleic acid (apioNA) having the four natural nucleobases

The synthesis of the 3'-deoxyapionucleoside 3'-triphosphates (apioNTPs) having the four natural nucleobases and their enzymatic incorporation into a DNA-DNA primer-template have been tried. Therminator DNA polymerase was shown to incorporate these apioNTPs effectively giving 43mer DNA-apioNA chimera.     

Fabrication and evaluation of photonic metamaterial crystal

Many researching efforts have been reported to seek various fundamental LC resonance structures, recently. But still the Split Ring Resonator (SRR) is the most famous and major fundamental LC-resonance structure used in the metamaterial. We employed SRR structure as the fundamental LC-resonance mechanism to fabricate photonic crystal with periodic arrangement of two different metamaterial areas composed from SRR arrays on the dielectric substrate. We developed Photonic Metamaterial Crystal (PMC) to realize the more advanced and versatile functions of the metamaterial by 1 dimensional or 2 dimensional periodic arranging of two metamaterial sections which have different dispersion properties due to the different size of SRR structures each other. In this paper, we report the fabrication process, estimation of PMC properties and some possible future application prospects, for instance the PMC waveguide structures and nonlinear properties of PMC observed as selective LC-resonant properties in Raman mapping analysis of PMC. These are quite interesting characters of PMC and the attractive applications as the PMC devices.     

Differences in the yields of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by pressurized liquid extraction and the Japanese official method

To improve the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from sediment samples, we optimized the conditions of pressurized liquid extraction (PLE). The yields increased as the extraction temperature increased from 100 to 190 degrees C, but the effect of increasing pressure (from 15 to 20 MPa) was small. Parameters of 190 degrees C and 20 MPa, near the maximum of the equipment, gave the highest yield. Under these conditions, the yields of 17 PAHs were 1.5 - 34 times those obtained by the Japanese official method (shaking and ultrasonic extraction with acetone at room temperature).     

Quantal master equation valid for any time scale

A new memoryless expression for the equation of motion for the reduced density matrix is derived. It is equivalent to that proposed by Tokuyama and Mori, but has a more convenient form for the application of the perturbational expansion method. The master equation derived from this form of equation in the first Born approximation is applied to two examples, the Brownian motion of a quantal oscillator and that of a spin. In both examples the master equation is rewritten into the coherent-state representation. A comparison is made with the stochastic theory of the spectral line shape given by Kubo, and it is shown that this theory of the line shape can be incorporated into the framework of the present theory.     

Beta-1,3-glucan polysaccharide (schizophyllan) acting as a one-dimensional host for creating supramolecular dye assemblies

We have demonstrated that one-dimensional supramolecular dye assemblies with a uniform diameter can be created by utilizing schizophyllan (SPG) as a one-dimensional host. In the supramolecular nanofibers, the dye molecules are assembled into the different aggregation modes depending on the preparation procedures. The findings establish that SPG is useful for creating the supramolecular nanofibers, where temporal superstructures can be stabilized by the SPG-specific helical higher-order structure. Ascent of open-circuit voltage on diamond-like carbon photovoltaic cell by infrared heating-assisted pulsed-laser deposition

Phosphorus-doped diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were deposited on quartz and p-type silicon (p-Si) substrates by pulsed-laser deposition. Open-circuit voltage (V _oc) and short-circuit density (I _sc/cm²) from a heating process converted from one type of electrode to another and the two types of electrode pattern are shown by the V–I characteristics. The first heating process was by a ceramic heater, and the other was by an infrared heater. We adopted two electrode patterns, from a bipectinate electrode and a plot pattern electrode, to measure electric photovoltaic characteristics. We were able to upgrade V _oc and I _sc/cm² to 35∼45 mV, and 0.24 μA/cm², respectively, under infrared heating. V _oc by the plot pattern electrode was over 2 V under infrared heating and ceramic heating did not match this on deposition by the PLD method.
