Noncritically phase-matched frequency conversion in Gd(x)Y(1-x)Ca(4)O(BO(3))(3) crystal

A nonlinear optical crystal YCa(4)O(BO(3))(3) (YCOB) is phase matchable for third-harmonic generation (THG) of a Nd:YAG laser by type I mixing between 1.064 and 0.532mum . By partial substitution of Gd for Y in YCOB, a solid solution Gd(x)Y(1-x)Ca(4)O(BO(3))(3) gradually changes the phase-matching angles of THG to (theta, ?)=(90( degrees ), 90 ( degrees )) . We present the properties of noncritically phase-matched THG in Gd(x) Y(1-x)Ca(4)O(BO(3))(3) (x=0.28) .     

Discrimination of the geometrical isomers of 2,3-, 2,5-, and 2,6-dimethylpiperazines based on 1 H?Nmr spectral data

¹ H-Nmr spectra of cis and trans isomers of 2,3-, 2,5-, and 2,6-dimethylpiperazines were taken at various temperatures. The spectra of geometrical isomers bearing the ae or ea dimethyl groups showed broadening at lower temperatures. It was clarified that the measurement of the spectra at lower temperatures is useful for the discrimination of the geometrical isomers of dimethylpiperazines.     

Graphical representation of the solutions of the schrödinger equations for a particle in various model potentials

Several one-dimensional Schrödinger equations for a particle trapped in various model potentials are solved analytically or approximately, and the results are plotted by an X—Y plotter. Typical results are illustrated. Several interesting features of the relations between the shape of the potential and the solution of the Schrödinger equation are pointed out. Combination of these results allows reasonable guesses about the forms of the energy levels and wavefunctions for complicated but realistic problems.     

Selective tungsten deposition into ordered nanohole arrays of anodic porous alumina by electron-beam-induced deposition

The selective deposition of a metal (tungsten) into ordered nanohole arrays of an anodic porous alumina membrane was performed using an electron-beam-induced deposition process. After deposition, the membrane was observed and analyzed using electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. It is shown that the deposition was preferentially conducted in the holes in the irradiated area of the electron beam. A calculation of the electron-beam intensity explains the reason for the preferential deposition in the holes. PACS 81.07.-b; 81.16.Rf; 61.46.+w     

A novel procedure for the preparation of zinc reagents: a practical synthesis of (+)-biotin

The use of bromine for activation of zinc dust allowed smooth and reproducible reduction of iodide 1 to the corresponding zinc reagent 2. The zinc reagent 2 obtained by the present protocol was allowed to the Fukuyama coupling reaction with thiolactone 3 to provide a key intermediate 4 for (+)-biotin in high yield using a reasonably fair amount of 1 (1.4 equiv).     

-adic -basis and regular local ring

We introduce the concept of -adic -basis as an extension of the concept of -basis. Let be a regular local ring of prime characteristic and a ring such that . Then we prove that is a regular local ring if and only if there exists an -adic -basis of and is Noetherian.

     

Amino acids and peptides. XXXVIII. Facile synthesis of laminin-related peptide-poly(ethylene glycol) hybrids by the solid phase method

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) has been studied as a drug-carrier for proteins, but not for small peptides. Laminin, a cell adhesive protein, has Tyr-Ile-Gly-Ser-Arg (YIGSR) sequence and peptides containing this sequence inhibit experimental metastasis. We have studied PEG hybrids of YIGSR and other small laminin-related peptides. In a previous paper, we reported preparation of YIGSR-PEG hybrids by combination of the solid phase method and the solution method, but the synthetic procedure was problematic. Here we report a facile synthesis of PEG hybrids of YIGSR (PEG-YIGSR, YIGSR-PEG, PEG-YIGSR-PEG) by the solid phase method.     

Photoinduced dissociation reactions of silver fluoride cluster ions

Photoinduced dissociation in the ultraviolet region has been investigated for Ag _nF _n-1 ⁺ cluster ions. Photodissociation spectrum of Ag₂F⁺ in the energy of 3.8–5.6 eV exhibits several sharp bands corresponding to the transition to electronically excited states. In this dissociation, only the Ag₂ ⁺ ion was observed as a fragment ion. Theoretical calculation indicates that the parent Ag₂F⁺ ion has a linear Ag-F-Ag equilibrium geometries in the ground and excited states. Since conformational changes by excitation of bending vibration are necessary for the fragmentation of an F atom, this indicates that production of Ag₂ ⁺ from Ag₂F⁺ is a result of internal conversion and following conformational changes.
