Formation of vortex flows in thin nematic cells

The director field reorientation and the formation of steady vortex flows in doubly and obliquely oriented thin liquid-crystal cells under the temperature gradient have been theoretically described within the nonlinear generalization of the classical Ericksen-Leslie theory for describing liquid crystal hydrodynamics. This generalization allowing the consideration of thermomechanical contributions to the shear stress and to the entropy balance equation has made it possible to describe the formation of a steady two-vortex flow in doubly oriented liquid-crystal cells.

We propose to introduce a geometric control subsystem into the attitude control systems of space-craft that would allow the current system sensor configuration to be determined in real time.     

Expedient Strategy for the Synthesis of 5-Acylethynylpyrrole-2-carbaldehydes

5-Acylethynylpyrrole-2-carbaldehydes have been synthesized from the protected pyrrole-2-carbaldehydes by their transition-metal-free topochemical mechanoactivated ethynylation with acylbromoacetylenes in a solid Al₂O₃ medium (room temperature, 6 h, 41–54% yields).     

Bäcklund transformations between four Lax-integrable 3D equations

Recently a classification of contactly-nonequivalent three-dimensional linearly degenerate equations of the second order was presented by E.V. Ferapontov and J. Moss. The equations are Lax-integrable. In our paper we prove that all these equations are connected with each other by appropriate Bäcklund transformations.     

Solubility of ammonium palmitate in supercritical carbon dioxide

The solubility of ammonium palmitate in supercritical carbon dioxide is studied in the dynamic regime at 308.15–333.15 K and 10.0–35.0 MPa. Experimental data are described in the framework of the Peng–Robinson equation of state.     

Phase visualization in the study of cellular structures by confocal microscopy

It is experimentally shown that recording of the axial hologram, along with the confocal image, expands the possibilities of studying biological structures. Specifically, this approach makes it possible to visualize the phase of object wave without significant changes in the confocal microscope design and using standard methods for image processing.
