The near-surface ion distribution at the solid-liquid interface during the Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction (HOR)/Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) on a rotating platinum disc electrode is demonstrated in this work. The relation between reaction rate, mass transport and the resulting surface pH-value is used to theoretically predict cyclic voltammetry behaviour using only thermodynamic and diffusion data obtained from the literature, which were confirmed by experimental measurements. The effect of buffer addition on the current signal, the surface pH and the ion distribution is quantitatively described by analytical solutions and the fragility of the surface pH during reactions that form or consume H(+) in near-neutral unbuffered solutions or poorly buffered media is highlighted. While the ideal conditions utilized in this fundamental study cannot be directly applied to real scenarios, they do provide a basic understanding of the surface pH concept for more complex heterogeneous reactions. 相似文献

We investigate the effects of the probe apex geometry, overlap of the electric double layers (EDLs) and Debye screening on surface potential mapping with scanning electrochemical potential microscopy (SECPM). The simulation consists of scanning a tip parallel to the electrode surface over a charged hemispherical nano-particle adsorbed on the electrode surface. As expected, a clear dependence of the apparent size of the imaged particle on the probe apex geometry has been noticed. Injector-internal thermal desorption from edible oils or fats enables the analysis of a wide range of compounds in oils or extracts of fatty food without prior removal of the sample matrix. The oil or fat is deposited onto the wall of the injector liner. The solutes of interest are evaporated, leaving behind the sample matrix. The injector is kept at a temperature volatilizing the solutes of interest, but minimizing evaporation of the bulk material of the oil. This technique was optimized regarding sample deposition on the liner wall (Part 1) and desorption of high boiling compounds, such as migrants from food packaging materials into simulant D (olive oil) or fatty food (Part 2). The sample liquid should be transferred to the liner wall and spread to a thin film in order to facilitate the release of high boiling components. Visual experiments with perylene-containing solutions showed that the oil must be diluted to reduce the viscosity (separation from the needle tip). The oil concentration should not exceed 20% in order to rule out that squirting sample liquid drops to the bottom of the vaporizing chamber. Further dilution to about 10% oil improves spreading of the liquid to a thin film. A rather high boiling solvent should be used, such as n-butyl acetate, to prevent thermospray at the needle exit and violent evaporation from the liner wall with sputtering liquid. Aromatics of a C15? C30 mineral oil fraction, the “batching oil” used for producing jute fabrics, were analyzed for estimating the toxicity of oil transferred from jute bags to foods. Group-type pre-separation according to ring systems occurred on a LC NH2 column with pentane and small additions of methanol as eluent. Ternary complexes between the macrocyclic host cucurbit[8]uril, dicationic dyes, and chiral aromatic analytes afford strong induced circular dichroism (ICD) signals in the near‐UV and visible regions. This allows for chirality sensing and peptide‐sequence recognition in water at low micromolar analyte concentrations. The reversible and noncovalent mode of binding ensures an immediate response to concentration changes, which allows the real‐time monitoring of chemical reactions.
