Imaging of spatial structures in crystals with ballistic phonons

Ballistic phonon propagation in single crystals has been used for imaging defect structures in bulk material. We have realized this principle by means of low-temperature scanning electron microscopy. As model cases we have imaged laser drilled holes in single-crystalline sapphire and -quartz samples. Comparing the acoustic images with those obtained by optical transmission microscopy, we found that fine structure seen optically was well reproduced acoustically. In addition strain fields due to plastic deformations could clearly be imaged acoustically. The spatial resolution of our imaging technique is estimated to be a few micrometer. By using two or more phonon detectors, three-dimensional imaging of spatial inhomogeneities becomes possible.     

Characterization of SiO2-P2O5-ZrO2 Sol-Gel/NAFION™ Composite Membranes

Composite membranes were prepared by (a) infiltrating NAFION with SiO₂-P₂O₅-ZrO₂ sol, and (b) recasting a film using NAFION solution containing SiO₂-P₂O₅-ZrO₂ sol. The membranes were characterized by Differential Thermal Analysis and ac-impedance spectroscopy as a function of relative humidity. The influences of the heat treatment (80°C–150°C) and cleaning on the electrical properties were investigated. The incorporation of SiO₂-P₂O₅-ZrO₂ gels into NAFION lead to improvements in its thermal stability and proton conductivity.     

Coherent single pion production by antineutrino charged current interactions and test of PCAC

The cross section for coherent production of a single π^? meson in charged current antineutrino interactions on neon nuclei has been measured in BEBC to be (175±25) 10^?40 cm²/neon nucleus, averaged over the energy spectrum of the antineutrino wide band beam at the CERN SPS; this corresponds to (0.9±0.1) % of the total charged current \(\bar v_\mu \) cross section. The distributions of kinematical variables are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on the PCAC hypothesis and the meson dominance model; in particular, theQ ² dependence is well described by a propagator containing a massm=(1.35±0.18) GeV. The absolute value of the cross section is also in agreement with the model. This analysis thus provides a test of the PCAC hypothesis in the antineutrino energy range 5–150 GeV.     

A novel type of phosphide: synthesis and X-ray crystal structure analysis of (tBu3Si)3P4Li3

The tetraphosphides (tBu3Si)3P4M3 (M = Li, Na) and (tBu2PhSi)3P4Na3 have been synthesized in high yield from the reaction of 3 equivalents of the silanides tBu3SiM (M = Li, Na) and tBu2PhSiNa with P4 in benzene. (tBu3Si)3P4M3 (M = Li, Na) are transformed into the unsaturated triphosphides (tBu3Si)2P3M (M = Li, Na) and tBu3SiPM2 in tetrahydrofuran at ambient temperature.     

Pincer-porphyrin hybrids

[reaction: see text] Starting from tetrakis(3,5-bis(bromomethyl)phenyl)porphyrin, pincer-porphyrin hybrid molecules (tetrakis(ECE-pincer)porphyrin; E = N, P, S) based on a tetraphenylporphyrin skeleton have been prepared in high yields. These multi-ligand site compounds could be selectively metalated at their peripheries, which was shown by X-ray crystallography.
