An improved algorithm for solving biobjective integer programs

A parametric algorithm for identifying the Pareto set of a biobjective integer program is proposed. The algorithm is based on the weighted Chebyshev (Tchebycheff) scalarization, and its running time is asymptotically optimal. A number of extensions are described, including: a technique for handling weakly dominated outcomes, a Pareto set approximation scheme, and an interactive version that provides access to all Pareto outcomes. Extensive computational tests on instances of the biobjective knapsack problem and a capacitated network routing problem are presented.

The renaissance of palladium(II)-catalyzed oxidation chemistry

Palladium(II)-catalyzed oxidations constitute a paramount reaction class but have remained immature over the past few decades. Recently, this field has reappeared at the forefront of organometallic catalysis. This emerging area article outlines recent developments in palladium(II)-catalyzed oxidation chemistry with discussion of potential future growth.     

Polymer-brush stationary phases for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography

Synthesis of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) brushes from the inside of silica capillaries by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) yields unique stationary phases for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). Although PHEMA brushes have only a small effect on the separation of a set of phenols and anilines, derivatization of PHEMA with ethylenediamine (en) allows baseline resolution of several anilines that co-elute from bare silica capillaries. Derivatization of PHEMA with octanoyl chloride (C8-PHEMA films) affords even better resolution in the separation of a series of phenols and anilines. Increasing the thickness of C8-PHEMA coatings by a factor of 2 enhances resolution for several solute pairs, presumably because of an increase in the effective stationary phase to mobile phase volume ratio. Thus, this work demonstrates that thick polymer brushes provide a tunable stationary phase with a much larger phase ratio than is available from monolayer wall coatings. Through appropriate choice of derivatizing reagents, these polymer brushes should allow separation of a wide range of neutral molecules as well as compounds with similar electrophoretic mobilities.     

Crystal and molecular structure ofS-methyl(pentafluorosulfanyl)thiocarbamate

The X-ray structure of S-methyl(pentafluorosulfanyl)thiocarbamate, SF₅NHC(O)SCH₃, has been determined from three-dimensional diffractometer data and refined by full-matrix least-squares techniques. The crystals are monoclinic:P2₁/m,a=5.008 (5),b=7.811 (2),c=9.348 (4) Å, =99.08 (7)°, andZ=2; finalR=0.046 for 517 observed reflections. The structure comprises hydrogen-bonded (NHO) chains with the component monomers in thecis, cis-conformation, i.e., the arrangement of the nonhydrogen and nonfluorine atoms is nearly planar, the SF₅ group and the O are in acis position with respect to the C-NH bond, and the O and the CH₃ group are in acis position with respect to the C(O)-S bond. Theoretical methods including MNDO and molecular modeling were used to study the relative stabilities of the four possible conformations of SF₅NHC(O)SCH₃.     

Synthetic erythropoietic proteins: tuning biological performance by site-specific polymer attachment

Chemical synthesis in combination with precision polymer modification allows the systematic exploration of the effect of protein properties, such as charge and hydrodynamic radius, on potency using defined, homogeneous conjugates. A series of polymer-modified synthetic erythropoiesis proteins were constructed that had a polypeptide chain similar to the amino acid sequence of human erythropoietin but differed significantly in the number and type of attached polymers. The analogs differed in charge from +5 to -26 at neutral pH and varied in molecular weight from 30 to 54 kDa. All were active in an in vitro cell proliferation assay. However, in vivo potency was found to be strongly dependent on overall charge and size. The trends observed in this study may serve as starting points for the construction of more potent synthetic EPO analogs in the future.
