OH sensor based on ultraviolet, continuous-wave absorption spectroscopy utilizing a frequency-quadrupled, fiber-amplified external-cavity diode laser

The development of an all-solid-state cw laser system for optical absorption measurements of the OH radical in the UV spectral range is described. The tunable output of a 1064-nm external-cavity diode laser is amplified by use of a Nd:doped, double-clad fiber amplifier. The amplified near-IR radiation is frequency doubled by a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal and then quadrupled in a beta-barium borate crystal. The design and operation of the system and measurements of OH absorption in the (2, 0) band of the A(2)?(+)- X(2)? electronic transition are discussed.     

Diffraction errors in micromirror-array based wavefront generation

Using Laser-based Speckle-Interferometers, the shape of optically rough surfaces can be measured precisely and contactlessly from variable measuring distances even in regions of difficult access. This work is concerned with the integration of a micromirror array (MMA) into an electronic Speckle-Pattern-Interferometer. With the adaptive optics, it is intended to adapt the phasefront of a reference wave to critical surface areas of the measurement object. Yet, due to the topography of the MMA, diffraction effects occur which affect the phase and intensity of the generated wavefront. We demonstrate how these diffraction effects can be efficiently modelled by a Fraunhofer diffraction method. We compare the results of this model to theoretical data obtained by a numerical Fresnel diffraction model and to measurement data obtained from a measurement setup incorporating a multi mirror array.     

Generaton of tunable 16 μm radiation by stimulated hyper-raman effect in strontium vapour

The generation of tunable 16 μm radiation by stimulated hyper-Raman scattering from atomic strontium vapour is reported. The infrared radiation has a linewidth of 0.4 cm⁻¹ which corresponds to that of the nitrogen laser pumped dye laser used as a pump source. Due to relatively low pump intensity the infrared power was only 20 mW. However, the system is easily scalable to a higher conversion efficiency.     

Application of a CW chemical laser for remote pollution monitoring and process control

The measurement of the concentration of gaseous hydrogen fluoride in the exhaust of an aluminum plant by resonance absorption of the radiation of a cw chemical HF laser is reported. The HF concentration has been evaluated taking into account the simultaneous absorption of water vapor and carbon dioxide at the HF laser frequencies. The absorption cross sections for H₂O and CO₂ at the HF laser lines have been determined in laboratory experiments.
