Automatic determination of total aliphatic amines by on-line photometric liquid-liquid microextraction

An automatic flow method for the determination of total aliphatic amines has been developed. Using an integrated micro extraction unit at the detection point that allows continuous on-line monitoring of small organic plug from which amines are extracted. It is based on the formation of ion-pairs between aliphatic amines and sodium 1,2-naphthoquinone-5-sulphonate that are subsequently extracted into chloroform. The gradual enrichment of the organic phase with the ion-pair is continuously monitored at 460 nm. Absorbance readings at a fixed time and the slopes of absorbance-time recordings are the measured parameters used for determination purposes. The proposed method has been applied to the determination of total aliphatic amines in both synthetic and real (food) samples.     

Application of infrared spectroscopy to the assessment of authenticity of tea

Diffusion reflectance fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in the mid-IR region was used to assess the authenticity of tea varieties. The differences between the spectra of 12 different tea varieties (seven black, two green, three semifermented grades) were sufficient to allow their discrimination by the soft independent modelling of class analogy classification method or linear discriminant analysis, despite a significant heterogeneity of the samples as revealed by variance analysis.     

Preconcentration of cadmium by MEUF in sodium dodecylsulphate solutions

The ultrafiltration preconcentration of Cd²⁺ using micellar extraction with 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ), solubilized in anionic micelles of sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS)) were studied. The n-butanol was used as a co-surfactant. Ultrafiltration yields (R, %) on cellulose acetate membranes (wet, 20000 MW-CO) under 400 kPa pressure were determined. Distribution ratios (D) of cadmium between bulk liquid phase and micellar pseudophase were estimated. The constants (app.) for the cadmium-sodium exchange on SDS micelles surface at pH values of 4.8 and 5.3 (3.36 and 3.86, respectively) were determined. It was found, that the values of ultrafiltration yields of the cadmium (at constant concentration of 8-HQ) are influenced not only by the pH and by the concentration values, but also by the ratio of the concentrations of the metal and the anionic surfactant.     

Synthesis and Structure Elucidation of New Regioisomeric 2‐Alkylamino‐6‐aryl‐8,9‐dihydropyrimido[4,5‐b][1,4]diazepin‐4(7H)‐ones

Novel 2‐Alkylamino‐6‐aryl‐8,9‐dihydropyrimido[4,5‐b][1,4]diazepin‐4(7H)‐ones 5a , 5b , 5c , 5d , 5e , 5f , 5g , 5h , 5i , 5j , 5k , 5l , 5m , 5n , 5o were prepared regioselectively by the reaction of 2‐alkylamino‐5,6‐diaminopyrimidin‐4(3H)‐ones 3a , 3b , 3c and dimethylamino propiophenones (Mannich bases) 4a , 4b , 4c , 4d , 4e , 4f . The combination of conventional heating and microwave irradiation approaches provided the possibility of working with both stable and sensitive diaminopyrimidines by controlling parameters such as reaction rates, temperature, and power of irradiation. All products were fully characterized by detailed NMR measurements.     

Formation of coordination compounds with aniline in the interlayer space of Ca<Superscript>2+</Superscript>-, Cu<Superscript>2+</Superscript>- and Fe<Superscript>3+</Superscript>-exchanged montmorillonite

The influence of Ca²⁺-, Cu²⁺- and Fe³⁺-exchanged montmorillonite (MMT) on the type of interaction with aniline in the interlayer space of MMT has been studied by means of X-ray powder diffraction and infrared spectra. Results of X-ray diffraction showed that aniline was successfully intercalated into the interlayer space of MMT. Based on IR spectra evaluation, aniline was indirectly coordinated through a water-bridge in Ca²⁺- and Fe³⁺-MMT and it was indirectly coordinated through a water-bridge as well as protonated in Cu²⁺-MMT (the spectrum of protonated aniline showed deformation and changes in the NH ₃ ⁺ absorption at approximately 1521 cm^?1). It is important to point out that Cu²⁺-MMT indirect coordination and protonation occur simultaneously.     

Solubility and preferential solvation of acetaminophen in methanol + water mixtures at 298.15 K

The equilibrium solubility of acetaminophen in methanol + water binary mixtures at 298.15 K was determined and correlated with the Jouyban–Acree model. Preferential solvation parameters by methanol (δx_1,3) were derived from their thermodynamic solution properties by means of the inverse Kirkwood–Buff integrals method. δx_1,3 values are negative in water-rich mixtures but positive in compositions from 0.32 in mole fraction of methanol to pure methanol. It is conjecturable that in the former case, the hydrophobic hydration around non-polar groups plays a relevant role in the solvation. The higher solvation by methanol in mixtures of similar cosolvent compositions and methanol-rich mixtures could be explained in terms of the higher basic behavior of this cosolvent.     

Lactic acid derivatives with terphenyl molecular core

New lactic acid derivatives, based on terphenyl molecular core laterally substituted by chlorine atom, have been synthesised and their liquid crystalline properties studied. We varied the molecular structure by prolonging the non-chiral chain and analysed the mesogenic properties with respect to its length. We found that all new compounds reveal the SmA*–SmC* phase sequence in an extremely broad temperature interval. The experimental techniques, namely the polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray diffraction and helical pitch measurements, have been applied to establish the physical properties. Studied compounds exhibit very high values of the spontaneous polarisation and the tilt angle grows continuously on cooling up to 42°. The pitch values drop down when prolonging the molecular non-chiral chain.
