First example of chiral N-heterocyclic carbenes as catalysts for kinetic resolution

Chiral N-heterocyclic carbenes, which are derived from C2-symmetric 1,3-bis(1-arylethyl)imidazolium salts, catalyze enantioselective acylation of racemic secondary alcohols.     

Effect of compression on interaction between 1,4-dihydropyridine compounds and lactose monohydrate

Manidipine dihydrochloride or benidipine hydrochloride will change to hydrate form in part, when differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) measurement is carried out together with lactose monohydrate. This interaction was accelerated by compressing their mixture. It can be suggested that the interaction may cause by the disruption of crystal structure of lactose monohydrate due to compression to set free of water molecules. A new DSC peak at 170 degrees C, which was not observed in each component, appeared in DSC measurement of a mixture. This will be based on hydrate formed by the interaction, i.e., movement of water molecules. The profile of the plotting of the DSC peak area ratio before and after compression against the compression force changed by the molar ratio of lactose monohydrate in a mixture. In the case of low molar ratio of lactose monohydrate, profiles for manidipine dihydrochloride and benidipine hydrochloride differed from each other. This will be because manidipine dihydrochloride is stickier than benidipine hydrochloride. The profile for manidipine dihydrochloride became more gradual and showed lag compression force region when the amount of addition of the lubricant, magnesium stearate in a mixture increased. The endothermic peak area at 170 degrees C for manidipine dihydrochloride was larger than that for benidipine hydrochloride. It should be suggested that benidipine hydrochloride is easier to be transformed to its hydrate than manidipine dihydrochloride.     

Absolute stereochemistry of citrinadins a and B from marine-derived fungus

[Structure: see text]. Citrinadin A (2) is a pentacyclic indolinone alkaloid isolated from the cultured broth of a fungus, Penicillium citrinum, which was separated from a marine red alga. The absolute stereochemistry of the pentacyclic core in 2 and its new congener, citrinadin B (1), was elucidated by analysis of the ROESY spectrum for the chlorohydrin derivative (3) of 1 as well as comparison of the electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra for 1 and 2 with those of known spirooxiindole alkaloids. On the other hand, the absolute configuration at C-21 bearing an epoxide ring was assigned as S by comparison of the vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of 1 with those of model compounds 2S- and 2R-2,3-epoxy-3,3-dimethyl-1-phenylpropan-1-one (4a and 4b, respectively).     

Thick Silicate Film by an Interfacial Polymerization

A thick silica gel film, corresponding to the glass film of 10–20 micron in thickness, has been formed at the interface between two immiscible liquids, hexane and water, using E-40, a partially polymerized silicon alkoxide, as the precursor. The film formation was possible using both acid- and base-catalyzed water, but was greatly dependent on the type of catalyst. Only the trace of a film was observed for the system catalyzed with a strong electrolyte such as HCl, HNO₃ or NaOH, while a gel film, corresponding to the glass film of several to 10 micron in thickness was formed with a weak electrolyte such as ammonia, organic acid like acetic acid, citric acid, etc., of similar pH value. The direct introduction of organic base catalyst like triethylamine in hexane was much more effective than the use of ammonia water, suggesting that the polymerization of E-40 to form a gel film takes place in the organic phase, where water molecules, as well as undissociated ammonia or organic acids, can diffuse in.     

Photoelectron spectra and angular distribution in reson three-photon ionization of atomic iron: J dependence

Kenetic energies and angular distributions of photoelectrons emitted by three-photon ionization fo atomic iron through two-photon resonant state e⁷D_J and e⁵ D_J, were measured, by using visible lasers. J-resolved photoelectron bands attributab to the a⁶D_J and a⁴F_j ionic states are reported.     

Determination of threo and erythro configurations of 3-fluorophenylalanine for verifying stereochemical aspects of recently reported syntheses

Determination of threo and erythro configurations of both diastereoisomers of 3-fluorophenylalanine on the basis of chemical transformation and X-ray analysis has confirmed that the aziridine ring opening reaction gives the threo isomer stereoselectively, whereas the fluorodehydroxylation reaction affords both isomers nonselectively.     

Preparation of Saccharide-Silica Composites by a Sol-Gel Method and the Application for Optical Resolution of Metal Chelate Compounds

A novel organic-inorganic composite was prepared by a sol-gel process using hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) reacted with a saccharide. During the process, ethoxy groups of the TEOS were replaced with hydroxyl groups of the saccharide and, consequently, saccharide molecules were combined with silica through their hydroxyl groups. Samples obtained under different reaction conditions were used for optical resolution of a metal chelate compound. The resolution ability of the composites was affected by the amount of water added for hydrolysis and of the saccharide. In particular, the amount of water drastically influenced the optical resolution performance. Composites obtained at the lower H2O/TEOS ratio gave the metal chelate compound a higher optical rotation. Three types of composites with the same composition were prepared by kneading, impregnation and by the sol-gel method, and were compared. The sol-gel composite showed the best optical resolution ability. It was concluded that the optical resolution ability was closely related to dispersibility of saccharide in the silica matrix.
