Detection and grading for esophageal varices in patients with chronic liver damage: comparison of gadolinium-enhanced and unenhanced steady-state coherent MR images

The purpose of this study was to compare observer interpreted steady-state coherent coronal images and gadolinium-enhanced axial images in terms of the detection and grading of esophageal varices. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and gastrointestinal endoscopy were performed within 2 weeks in 90 patients with chronic liver damage, including 55 with untreated esophageal varices, for periodic screening purposes. Two blinded readers retrospectively reviewed T1- and T2-weighted images with gadolinium-enhanced (gadolinium image set) and steady-state coherent (coherent image set) images. Sensitivity for the detection of esophageal varices was higher (P<.001) in the gadolinium image set (76%) than in the coherent image set (35%); on the other hand, specificity was higher (P<.001) in the coherent image set (91%) than in the gadolinium image set (66%). Furthermore, area under the ROC curve was higher for the gadolinium image set (Az=0.823) than the coherent image set (Az=0.761) (P=.48). Moderate and weak positive correlations with endoscopic grades were found for the gadolinium image (r=0.48, P<.01) and coherent image sets (r=0.34, P=.018). The addition of steady-state coherent imaging to the current routine liver imaging protocol did not improve the detection or grading of esophageal varices, whereas gadolinium-enhanced imaging was found to be potentially valuable. Nevertheless, endoscopy was confirmed to be mandatory in patients with esophageal varices suspected by MRI of the liver.     

Compact directed acyclic word graphs for a sliding window

Suffix trees are a well-known and widely-studied data structure highly useful for string matching. The suffix tree of a string w can be constructed in O(n) time and space, where n denotes the length of w. Larsson achieved an efficient algorithm to maintain suffix trees for a sliding window. It contributes to prediction by partial matching (PPM) style statistical data compression scheme. Compact directed acyclic word graphs (CDAWGs) are a more space-economical data structure for indexing strings. In this paper we propose a linear-time algorithm to maintain CDAWGs for a sliding window.     

General elephants of three-fold divisorial contractions

We treat three-fold divisorial contractions whose exceptional divisors contract to Gorenstein points. We prove that a general element in the anti-canonical system around the exceptional divisor has at worst Du Val singularities. As application to classification, we describe divisorial contractions to compound points, and moreover, we deduce that any divisorial contraction to a compound or point has discrepancy .

     

Quasi likelihood analysis of volatility and nondegeneracy of statistical random field

We construct a quasi likelihood analysis for diffusions under the high-frequency sampling over a finite time interval. For this, we prove a polynomial type large deviation inequality for the quasi likelihood random field. Then it becomes crucial to prove nondegeneracy of a key index _χ0${\chi }_0$. By nature of the sampling setting, _χ0${\chi }_0$ is random. This makes it difficult to apply a naïve sufficient condition, and requires a new machinery. In order to establish a quasi likelihood analysis, we need quantitative estimate of the nondegeneracy of _χ0${\chi }_0$. The existence of a nondegenerate local section of a certain tensor bundle associated with the statistical random field solves this problem.

Hydrogen Gas Sensing of High Electrical Conducting-P2O5-SiO2 Glasses Prepared by Sol-Gel Process

High proton-conducting P₂O₅-SiO₂ glass was applied to the electrolyte of the hydrogen concentration cell for hydrogen gas sensing. 5P₂O₅·95SiO₂ glass was prepared using the sol-gel method and its electrical conductivity and electromotive force were measured at 50°C as a function of both the ambient humidity and hydrogen gas concentration. The electrical conductivities increased with increasing humidity and reached 10^–2 S/cm at 90% relative humidity. The electromotive force of the hydrogen concentration cell, where the glass was used as a membrane, showed good Nernstian response to hydrogen pressure in the high relative humidity region.     

Total synthesis of (+/-)-hedychenone: trimethyldecalin terpene systems via stepwise allenoate diene cycloaddition

The total synthesis of hedychenone 1 is described. The cycloaddition of the hindered diene 2 and the allenecarboxylate 3 has been shown conclusively to proceed via the [2+2] cycloadduct 5 to give a 2:1 mixture of the desired formal Diels-Alder adducts, the exo and endo isomers 4xn and is thus a stepwise [4+2] cycloaddition. The exo isomer 4x was converted in four steps (reduction, oxidation, olefination, and desilylation) into hedychenone 1. [reaction: see text]     

Brønsted acid catalyzed formal insertion of isocyanides into a C-O bond of acetals

The Br?nsted acid catalyzed formal insertion of an isocyanide into a C-O bond of an acetal is described. A diverse array of acyclic and cyclic acetals can be applied to the catalytic insertion to form alpha-alkoxy imidates. Functional groups, such as nitro, cyano, halogen, ester, and alkoxy groups, are tolerant to the reaction conditions employed. The course of the reaction is highly dependent on the structure of the isocyanide. The use of an electron-deficient aryl isocyanide, such as 2c and 2d, is required to selectively obtain the monoinsertion product. When aryl isocyanides containing alkyl substituents, such as 2a and 2b, are employed, two molecules of the isocyanide are incorporated, and the double-insertion product is obtained. The reaction of tert-octyl isocyanide also induces a double incorporation, but the subsequent acid-mediated fragmentation leads to the 2-alkoxy imidoyl cyanide. The monoinsertion products, alpha-alkoxy imidates, can readily be hydrolyzed to alpha-alkoxy esters, realizing the formal carbonylation of an acetal.     

Medicinal flowers. XV. The structures of noroleanane- and oleanane-type triterpene oligoglycosides with gastroprotective and platelet aggregation activities from flower buds of Camellia japonica

The methanolic extract from the flowers buds of Camellia japonica L. (Theaceae) were found to exhibit potent inhibitory activities on ethanol- or indomethacin-induced gastric mucosal lesions in rats. Through bioassay-guided separation, 28-noroleanane-type triterpene oligoglycosides, camelliosides A, B, and C, and an oleanane-type triterpene oligoglycoside, camellioside D, were isolated from the methanolic extract together with five known compounds. The absolute stereostructures of camelliosides were determined on the basis of chemical and physicochemical evidence, which included the structure revision of the nortriterpene aglycons (camellenodiol and camelledionol). The principal oligoglycosides, camelliosides A and B, showed platelet aggregation activity in addition to the gastroprotective effects on ethanol- or indomethacin-induced gastric mucosal lesions in rats.     

The structures of macbecin I and II : New antitumor antibiotics

Macbecin I 1, C₃₀H₄₂N₂O₈, and macbecin II 2, C₃₀H₄₄N₂O₈, were shown to be 2,6-disubstituted benzoquinone and hydroquinone derivatives by an oxidation-reduction relationship, UV. ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectra. Alkaline methanolysis of 1 gave a 2-aminobenzoquinone derivative 5, suggesting an ansa-structure for 1, and acid hydrolysis of 1 gave decarbamoyl products 9,10 and 11, indicative of the location of carbamoyloxy group in allylic position. Spin decoupling studies on 1,3 and 5clarified the partial structures [A], [B], [C] and [D]. From their mutual disposition two structures 1a and 1b, were proposed out of which 1a has been selected for the structure of 1 on the basis of the structure of oxidative degradation product 12. X-Ray analysis of the bromoacetyl derivative of 1 confirmed the above proposed structure and determined the absolute stereochemistry of 1 and 2.
