Acid-catalyzed cyclizations of n-vinyl-α-sulfinylacetamides A novel synthetic approach to erythrinane

Under the Pummerer reaction conditions, N-(1-cyclohexenyl)-N-methyl-α-(methylsulfinyl)acetamide ($\text{7a}$) cyclized in a 5-endo trigonal fashion through the intermediary cation ($\text{8}$) to give the tetrahydro-4H-oxindole ($\text{10}$). The reaction was successively applied to a novel synthesis of erythrinane skeleton.     

Development of high-radiation-sensitive polymer gel for magnetic resonance imaging in three-dimensional dosimetry

We developed a high radiation sensitive polymer gel by modifying the amounts of the gel components and the temperature for the gel preparation. We evaluated its relaxation time linearity against dose and compared the measured dose distribution with the calculated one. For the relaxation time-dose linearity, irradiations were carried out with a linear accelerator using 6 MV photons and doses ranging from 0-5.0 Gy. The relationship between dose and R(2) value (reciprocal of T(2) relaxation time) was measured and it had good linearity over a wide range (0.3-5 Gy). The measured dose distributions were in good agreement with calculated ones. Since the present gel has higher sensitivity and it is synthesized more easily at lower cost than conventional polymer gels, we expect to see improved three-dimensional (3D) dosimetry using it.     

3 dB squeezing by single-pass parametric amplification in a periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystal

We present the experimental observation of pulsed squeezed light from a degenerate optical parametric amplifier pumped by a second harmonic of a continuous-wave mode-locked Nd:YVO4 laser. With a single pass through a 10 mm long periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystal, the classical parametric gain of 11 is observed. The measured noise reduction in the quiet quadrature is 3.2 dB below the shot-noise level.     

A concise route to (+)-lactacystin

A facile chromatography-free route to Kang's intermediate for the synthesis of (+)-lactacystin, a potent proteasome inhibitor, has been developed starting with Brown's asymmetric crotylation of tert-butyl 5-formyl-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxan-5-ylcarbamate, easily available from 2-amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3-diol (Tris).     

Six immunosuppressive features from an ascomycete, Zopfiella longicaudata, found in a screening study monitored by immunomodulatory activity

In a screening study on immunomodulatory fungal metabolites, three known anthraquinones, carviolin (roseo-purpurin) (1), 1-O-methylemodin (2), omega-hydroxyemodin (citreorosein) (4), and a new anthraquinone, omega-acetylcarviolin (3), together with a known steroid, ergosta-4,6,8(14),22-tetraen-3-one (5) and a new steroid, 25-hydroxyergosta-4,6,8(14),22-tetraen-3-one (6) were isolated from an Ascomycete, Zopfiella longicaudata, and found to have moderate immunosuppressive activities. The structure-activity relationships of these metabolites are discussed.     

Efficient synthesis of poly(phenylazomethine) dendrons allowing access to higher generation dendrimers

We have developed a novel synthetic method of phenylazomethine dendrons that uses 4,4'-methylenedianiline instead of 4,4'-diaminobenzophenone to synthesize the precursor of the phenylazomethine dendron and then oxidized the precursor to the next-generation dendron. For this method, the productivity of the dendrons has been significantly increased. Furthermore, as the synthesis of high-generation dendrons becomes easier, synthesis of DPA G5 was achieved. Periodic change of viscosity and density in an oscillating chemical reaction

It was found that the periodic change of the solution viscosity and density was generated in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. This rhythmic phenomenon was observed in both the iron catalyst [[Fe(Phen)(3)](2+)-[Fe(Phen)(3)](3+)] and the cerium catalyst [Ce(III)-Ce(IV)] system, where the solution viscosity and density were synchronized with the redox potential in the in-phase mode. However, the time delay existed between the redox potential and the solution viscosity and density. The behavior of the BZ reaction was also monitored in the presence of the nonionic surfactant. This experiment revealed that, beyond the critical micelle concentration, the phase between the redox potential and the solution viscosity and density was synchronized into the antiphase mode. We suggested that the variation of the catalyst drove the oscillation of the solution viscosity and density in the BZ reaction.     

Laser terahertz-emission microscope for inspecting electrical faults in integrated circuits

A laser terahertz-emission microscope (LTEM) system is proposed and developed for inspecting electrical faults in integrated circuits (IC). We test a commercial operational amplifier while the system is operating. Two-dimensional terahertz-emission images of the IC chip are clearly observed while the chip is scanned with a femtosecond laser. When one of the interconnection lines is cut, the damaged chip has a LTEM image different from that of normal chips. The results indicate that the LTEM system is a potential tool for IC inspection.     

Exchange interaction effects on the optical properties of LuMnO3

We have measured the optical conductivity of single crystal LuMnO3 from 10 to 45000 cm(-1) at temperatures between 4 and 300 K. A symmetry allowed on-site Mn d-d transition near 1.7 eV is observed to blueshift ( approximately 0.1 eV) in the antiferromagnetic state due to Mn-Mn superexchange interactions. Similar anomalies are observed in the temperature dependence of the TO phonon frequencies which arise from spin-phonon interaction. We find that the known anomaly in the temperature dependence of the quasistatic dielectric constant epsilon(0) below T(N) approximately 90 K is overwhelmingly dominated by the phonon contributions.     

Sigmasigma* transition in anti,cisoid alternating oligosilanes: clear-cut evidence for suppression of conjugation effect by a cisoid turn

On the basis of the UV absorption spectra of the anti,cisoid alternating oligosilanes, the first experimental clear-cut evidence was presented for the generally accepted idea that the sigma conjugation in polysilanes does not effectively extend through a tetrasilane fragment with a small dihedral angle such as a cisoid turn.
