Synthesis and properties of poly(phenylacetylenes) having two polar groups or one cyclic polar group on the phenyl ring

Phenylacetylene (PA) derivatives having two polar groups (ester, 2a – d ; amide, 4) or one cyclic polar group (imide, 5a – c ) were polymerized using (nbd)Rh⁺[(η⁶‐C₆H₅)B^?(C₆H₅)₃] catalyst to afford high molecular weight polymers (～1 × 10⁶ – 4 × 10⁶). The hydrolysis of ester‐containing poly(PA), poly( 2a) , provided poly(3,4‐dicarboxyPA) [poly ( 3 )], which could not be obtained directly by the polymerization of the corresponding monomer. The solubility properties of the present polymers were different from those of poly(PA) having no polar group; that is, poly( 2a )–poly( 2d ) dissolved in ethyl acetate and poly( 4 ) dissolved in N,N‐dimethylformamide, while poly(PA) was insoluble in such solvents. Ester‐group‐containing polymers [poly( 2a )–poly( 2d )] afforded free‐standing membranes by casting from THF solutions. HCN laser scattering on the JIPP T-IIU tokamak

A 4-channel HCN laser scattering system has been developed and applied to the JIPP T-IIU tokamak. Main aim of this system is to study microturbulence excited in the plasma, especially in the high power ICRF heating experiment. The observed density fluctuations are in a frequency range of the electron diamagnetic drift wave and have broad frequency spectra. The main part of the wavenumber is found to satisfy the condition of . In the heating experiments, deterioration of the energy confinement time is observed, and the density fluctuation level increases with the increase of the heating power.     

Semidifferential electroanalysis with a solid working electrode

Semidifferential electroanalysis is described for hexacyanoferrate(III), dichromate, copper(II), p-aminophenol, p-benzoquinone, m-dinitrobenzene, guanine, guanosine, adenine, and adenosine at a stationary solid working electrode. Nearly symmetrical, peaked curves are obtained for the electrode processes of all the samples investigated. The predicted dependence of peak height and peak potential on concentration, electrode area, and potential scan rate are confirmed-experimentally for the glassy carbon disk electrode. It is demonstrated that the technique with the solid working electrode provides higher sensitivity and better resolution than ordinary linear sweep voltammetry. The sensitivity is somewhat worse than in differential pulse voltammetry, but the technique has the advantage of Speed.     

Synthesis and ion selectivity of macrocyclic metacyclophanes analogous to spherand-type calixarenes

Novel macrocyclic compounds, hexahydroxy[1.0.1.0.1.0]- (2b) and octahydroxy[1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0]metacyclophane (2c) have been prepared in 50–70% yield by base-catalyzed condensation of 5,5-di-tert-butyl-2,2-dihydroxybiphenyl (1) with formaldehyde in refluxing xylene. An attempted alkylation of the flexible macrocycles2b and2c with ethyl bromoacetate in the presence of Cs₂CO₃ under acetonitrile reflux gave only one pure stereoisomer3 and4, respectively, while other possible isomers were not observed. The structural characterization of these products is also discussed. The two-phase solvent extraction data indicated that hexaethyl ester3 and octaethyl ester4 show strong metal affinity, comparable with that of the corresponding calix[n]arenes, and a high K⁺ selectivity was observed for octaethyl ester4.¹H-NMR titration of hexaethyl ester3 and octaethyl ester4 with KSCN clearly demonstrate that a 11 complex is formed which is stable on the NMR time scale.This paper is dedicated to the commemorative issue on the 50th anniversary of calixarenes.     

Spectrofluorimetric assay for acyl CoA-cholesterol acyltransferase

A sensitive assay for acyl CoA-cholesterol acyltransferase (EC 2.3.1.26) in rat liver microsomal and mitochondrial preparations is described. The lowered cholesterol concentration in the enzyme reaction with oleoyl CoA is determined spectrofluorimetrically by using the cholesterol oxidase/peroxidase/p-hydroxyphenylpropionic acid system. The assay requires as little as 20 μg of protein in the enzyme preparation.     

A synthesis of 2-substituted 2-aminoethanol derivatives having inhibitory activity against protein kinase C.

A series of 2-aminoethanol derivatives was synthesized and their inhibitory activities against protein kinase C were investigated. Among these compounds, 2-endo-hexadecylamino-5-norbornene-2- exo-methanol (4h) and 2-endo-hexadecylamino-5-norbornene-2,3-exo-dimethanol (4i) inhibited protein kinase C at the IC50 values of 2 x 10(-5) and 1 x 10(-5) M, respectively, but not protein kinase A at a concentration of 1 x 10(-3) M. The structure-activity relationships are discussed.
