Two-dimensional Wigner crystal in magnetic fields

Orbital magnetic moment and the frequency dependent conductivities of the Wigner crystal are examined in the harmonic approximation. The effects of scattering on the collective modes are also discussed.     

Molecular structure of phosgene as studied by gas electron diffraction and microwave spectroscopy: The rs,rm, and re structures

The microwave spectra of eight isotopic species of COCl₂ have been observed, and the following rotational constants have been obtained: An analysis of the rotational constants has resulted in the r_s and r_m structures. The equilibrium structure, r_e, has been estimated by combining the r_m parameters derived according to Watson's method and the r_e bond distances estimated in our recent electron-diffraction and spectroscopic studies to be $\text{r}{}_{\mathrm{e}}\text{(CO}\text{) = 1.1756 ± 0.0023}\text{A}\text{?}$, $\text{r}{}_{\mathrm{e}}\text{(CCl}\text{) = 1.7381 ± 0.0019}\text{A}\text{?}$, ∠_eClCCl = 111.79 ± 0.24°.     

Heats of pyridine intercalation with α- and γ-zirconium phosphates

Calorimetric measurements at 25°C were made to determine the thermodynamic quantities for the intercalation of pyridine with α- and γ-zirconium phosphates. These phosphates showed exothermic reactions with ΔH⁰ = ?59.3 and ?21.9 kJ mole^?1, respectively. The large difference between the depyridination temperatures for both intercalates is rediscussed with the aid of the ΔG⁰ data obtained.     

Critical modes of one-dimensional fermion systems

Critical modes of one-dimensional fermion systems are examined by use of the renormalization group technique. Both strongly incommensurate and commensurate bands are treated. Both frequency and momentum dependence and the analytic property of the response functions are determined. It is stressed that for some region of coupling constants the model has anomalous dimensions, i.e. it has critical indices dependent on the coupling constants. The results are applied to predict the temperature dependence of the shift and relaxation of the nuclear magnetic resonances.     

Two types of intramolecular homolytic substitution reactions at group XIV atoms: unusual radical 1,4-Sn shifts from Si to C and carbonylative SHi reaction at Si

4-[(Trimethylstannyl)diphenylsilyl]butanoyl radical, arising from the corresponding 3-(stannylsilyl)propyl radical and CO, undergoes an SHi reaction at Si with extrusion of trimethyltin radical to give silacyclopentanone. The parent 3-(stannylsilyl)propyl radical was also found to isomerize to (3-stannylpropyl)silyl radical via a 1,4-Sn shift from Si to C with a rate constant of 9.3 x 10(4) s-1 at 80 degrees C. Ab initio and DFT MO calculations support a front-side attack mechanism.     

Synthesis and antiviral activities of some 4,4'-dihydroxytriphenylmethanes

4,4'-Dihydroxytriphenylmethanes were synthesized using Br?nsted acid or Lewis acid in yields of 24-86% as target compounds for developing antiviral agents. Most of the 4,4'-dihydroxytriphenylmethanes showed significant activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 (anti-HSV-1 activity) in a plaque reduction assay. Higher cytotoxicity was observed generally in halogenated 4,4'-dihydroxytriphenylmethanes (2a-d) than in non-halogenated derivatives. The non-halogenated derivative, 4,4',4"-trihydroxy-3"-methoxytriphenylmethane (3), showed remarkable antiviral activity with an EC(50) value of 1.8 microg/ml.     

Total synthesis of leustroducsin B

A convergent total synthesis of leustroducsin B (1), which is known to exhibit a variety of biological activities, was successfully carried out. Notable features of our synthesis include construction of the C8 stereocenter by lipase-mediated desymmetrization of meso-diol 4 (90.2% ee) and preparation of the C9-C11 anti-diol moiety by the addition of alkynylzinc reagent 20 to the aldehyde 19. Furthermore, a new diol protecting group, p-silyloxybenzylidene, was developed for the deprotection from densely functionalized substrates under weakly acidic conditions. The protecting group was easily removed in a two-step procedure ((HF)3.Et3N; AcOH-THF-H2O).     

Synthesis of the P-cluster inorganic core of nitrogenases

The [8Fe-7S] core of the P-clusters in nitrogenases is unique among the known [Fe-S] clusters which are essential to electron-transfer processes in nature. The [8Fe-7S] cluster has been thought unstable and to exist only in protein environments. We found that this unusual [8Fe-7S] structure can be self-assembled from the reaction of Fe(II) bis-amide, tetramethylthiourea, 2,4,6-triisopropylbenzenethiol, and elemental sulfur in a specific mole ratio. The structure of the complex isolated therefrom closely resembles that of the reduced form (PN) of the P-clusters, while the 6Fe(II)2Fe(III) oxidation state was manifested by the M?ssbauer study.     

Total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes by sequential chemoselective conjugate addition-stereoselective nitro-Michael cyclization of an omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester

[reaction: see text] An omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester underwent a chemoselective conjugate addition of a nitroolefin moiety with aryllithium to produce a psi-aryl-omega-nitro-alpha,beta-unsaturated ester, which was then stereoselectively cyclized by intramolecular nitro-Michael reaction giving a functionalized cyclohexane applicable to the total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes.
