Effective mass anisotropy of hot electrons in nonparabolic conduction bands of n-doped InGaAs films using ultrafast terahertz pump-probe techniques

The anisotropic effective mass of energetic electrons in an isotropic, nonparabolic conduction band is revealed using ultrafast THz-pump-THz-probe techniques in a n-doped InGaAs semiconductor thin film. A microscopic theory is applied to identify the origin of the observed anisotropy and to show that the self-consistent light-matter coupling contributes significantly to the THz response.     

Delocalized quasiparticles in the vortex state of an overdoped high-T(c) superconductor probed by 63Cu NMR

We report the spin Knight shift (K(s)) and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) in the vortex state as a function of magnetic field (H) up to 28 T in the high-Tc superconductor TlSr2CaCu2O6.8 (Tc = 68 K). At low temperatures well below Tc, both K(s) and 1/T1 measured around the middle point between the two nearest vortices (saddle point) increase substantially with increasing field, which indicate that the quasiparticle states with an ungapped spectrum are extended outside the vortex cores in a d-wave superconductor. The density of states (DOS) around the saddle point is found to be kappaN(0)square root[H/H(c2)], with kappa = 0.5-0.7 and N0 being the normal-state DOS.     

Analysis of anomalous vibrational and rotational distributions in the CN(B2Σ+) state produced in the reaction of Ar(3P0,2) metastables with BrCN

The CN(B²Σ⁺ - X²Σ⁺) tail band emission system for μ′ = 11–20 resulting from the energy transfer reaction Ar(³P_0,2) + BrCN in a flowing afterglow apparatus was measured. The vibrational and rotational distributions were determined as a function of argon pressure. Numerous perturbed rotational lines were observed; analysis of the dependences of these lines on argon pressure, with the aid of experimental information already published, led to the following assignments as to the origins of the perturbations: For μ′ = 11, N′ = 20 and μ′ = 13, N′ = 9, the perturbing state is a ⁴Σ⁺; for μ′ = 12, N′ = 10 and 14, μ′ = 14, N′ = 7 and 10, and μ′ = 17, N′ ≈ 17–19 the perturbing state is A ²Π_i. The perturbed rotational line, μ′ = 11, N′ = 20, is found to be the primary source of intensity in the μ′ =11 vibrational band, but in all other cases the perturbed rotational lines do not significantly aid in the populating of the vibrational state. The anomalously high vibrational populations found in the tail band emission system (μ′ = 12, 14, 17 and 18), as well as the significantly high rotational excitations observed in the μ′ = 12–20 vibrational bands, apparently arise directly from the reaction intermediate.     

Non-destructive analysis of the two subspecies of African elephants, mammoth, hippopotamus, and sperm whale ivories by visible and short-wave near infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics

Visible (VIS) and short-wave near infrared (SW-NIR) spectroscopy was used for non-destructive analysis of ivories. VIS-SW-NIR (500-1000 nm) spectra were measured in situ for five kinds of ivories, that is two subspecies of African elephants, mammoth, hippopotamus, and sperm whale. Chemometrics analyses were carried out for the spectral data from 500 to 1000 nm region. The five kinds of ivories were clearly discriminated from each other on the scores plot of two principal components (PCs) obtained by principal component analysis (PCA). It was noteworthy that the ivories of the two subspecies of African elephants were discriminated by the scores of PC 1. The loadings plot for PC 1 showed that the discrimination relies on the intensity changes in bands due to collagenous proteins and water interacting with proteins. It was found that the scores plot of PC 2 is useful to distinguish between the ivories of the two subspecies of African elephants and the other ivories. We also developed a calibration model that predicted the specific gravity of five kinds of ivories from their VIS-SW-NIR spectral data using partial least squares (PLS)-1 regression. The correlation coefficient and root mean square error of cross validation (RMSECV) of this model were 0.960 and 0.037, respectively.     

The activation of molecular oxygen by horseradish peroxidase with sodium sulfite

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) utilizes molecular oxygen (O2) with sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) to oxidize thioanisole and styrene at the exterior of the heme pocket.     

FTIR studies of conformational energies of poly(acrylic acid) in cast films

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic measurements have been undertaken to estimate the conformational energies of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) cast films in the temperature range of 40–130°C. The temperature dependence of the IR spectra in the C=O stretching region has been analyzed to yield the side-chain and backbone conformational energies. The estimated energies are close to those previously obtained by polarized Raman spectroscopic measurements for PAA solutions. Combining the FTIR value of conformational energy with the simplified rotational isomeric state (RIS) model proposed in the Raman analysis provides a persistence length in accordance with earlier SAXS experiments. The data also agree with the Gibbs-DiMarzio predictions, further substantiating the validity of the analysis. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys, 35: 507–515, 1997
