The large-scale circulation, often called "wind," in the confined thermal turbulence of mercury is studied experimentally. The instantaneous velocity profile at 128 points is directly measured using ultrasonic velocimetry. The periodic velocity oscillation is observed in the case of the aspect-ratio Gamma = 1,2 but not in Gamma = 0.5. Its peak frequency is scaled by f(c) proportional Ra(gamma(c)), where Ra is the Rayleigh number and gamma(c) = 0.43,0.45 for Gamma = 1,2. f(c) is close to the wind circulation frequency f(p), and has the same order of transit time from the bottom to the top of the convection cell. A single roll circulation is expected in Gamma = 1; however, axisymmetric toroidal rings may exist near the upper and lower plate for Gamma = 0.5, which are stable up to Ra = 7 x 10 (10).  相似文献

We introduce a new figure of merit (FOM) including the input pump power limit associated with stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) for evaluation of the Kerr nonlinearity efficiency of optical fibers. The new FOM is expressed as gammaL(eff)P(SBS) (gamma is a nonlinearity parameter, L(eff) is effective length, and P(SBS) is the SBS threshold), while the conventional FOM is given by gammaL(eff). Using the new FOM, we perform an efficiency comparison among four types of state-of-the-art nonlinear optical fiber: a Bi2O3-based nonlinear fiber, a silica-based holey fiber, a highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber, and a conventional dispersion-shifted fiber. The Bi2O3-based nonlinear fiber is found to have the best Kerr nonlinearity efficiency owing to the superior nonlinear property of the Bi2O3 glass compared with that of the silica.  相似文献

The degradation of phenol by ultrasonic irradiation in the presence of TiO2 was investigated in complete darkness. The effects of amount of TiO2 and the combination of TiO2 addition with gas (air or oxygen) supply on the degradation kinetics of phenol and the formation of the reaction products were examined. The degradation rate of phenol increased with the amount of TiO2. As the dissolved oxygen concentration increased by supplying oxygen, the degradation rate of phenol also increased. A kinetic model for the disappearance of phenol was proposed. The model takes into account the OH radical formation by direct water degradation, indirect degradation by oxygen atom and indirect degradation by TiO2 catalysis. The calculated results explained well the fact that a higher amount of TiO2 and dissolved oxygen concentration gave faster disappearance rate.  相似文献

Coupling of glycosylated Fmoc-Thr or Fmoc-Ser with N-terminal amino acids on a resin proceeded smoothly under microwave irradiation for 20 min with much higher efficiency (98% yield per coupling) than found in more general conditions. Compared with a conventional protocol, the present method greatly reduces the time required for solid-phase glycopeptide synthesis from 4 days to 7 h, as is the case with the synthesis of Muc-1-related 20-residue glycopeptide carrying five core-2 trisaccharide chains. A clear film was easily prepared by air-drying anaqueous solution of pullulan (6%w/w) containing -cyclodextrin(CD, 1%w/w) and 2-bromoethanol (1%v/w). The resultingpullulan film was used as a substrate for simple measurements ofroom-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) spectra of polycyclicaromatic compounds (PACs). Only a drop (ca. 10 L) of a 100 gmL-1 sample solution in 95% ethanol was spotted onto the surfaceof the disk film (7–8 mm diameter) and the solvent wasallowed to evaporate at room temperature. The sample-spottedfilm was pasted on a glass plate (75 × 20 × 1 mm) with smallamounts of a starch glue. The plate was mounted into a solidsample holder, or alternatively inserted diagonally into a 1-cm cell holder.Without a dry gas flush during the measurements, RTPspectra based on the CD inclusion complexes of PACs wereobtained from six typical two- and three-ring compounds,including naphthalene, acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene,carbazole, and dibenzofuran. Only anthracene did notproduce a discernable phosphorescence signal by the presenttechnique.
