Three novel quassinoids, javanicolides A and B, and javanicoside A, from seeds of Brucea javanica

Two novel quassinoids, javanicolides A and B, and one novel quassinoid glucoside, javanicoside A were isolated from the seeds of Brucea javanica Merr. (Simaroubaceae), along with four known quassinoids, yadanziolides A and D, and bruceins D and E, and two known quassinoid glucosides, yadanziosides D and L. Their structures were elucidated by the analysis of spectral data and chemical evidence.     

Determination of the specific interaction of disubstituted aromatic compounds on hydrous zirconium oxide-loaded porous polymer resin

Summary A porous polymer resin loaded with hydrous zirconium oxide (Zr-gel) was evaluated as a stationary phase for the liquid chromatographic separation of disubstituted aromatic compounds. The prepared Zr-gel was used to separate disubstituted phenols andortho-substituted benzoic acid derivatives in reversed-phase mode. The retention time of catechol was greater than those of other disubstituted phenols; this implies that the Zr-gel has specificity for the phenolic hydroxyl group. The retention behavior ofortho-substituted benzoic acid derivatives on the Zr-gel was also evaluated in reversedphase mode using buffer. Phthalic acid was specifically retained in the vicinity of pH 6.0, which has been regarded as the equal adsorbic point. Similar behavior was also observed for salicylic acid, although the retention time of salicylic acid was less than that of phthalic acid. It seems that the specific retention behavior of hydrous zirconium oxide is a result of complexation with ligands such as hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. The results of this study have revealed that the retention mechanism of hydrous zirconium oxide is a combination of ion exchange and interaction based on complexation with ligands.     

Synthesis of pyrido[1′,2′:1,2]imidazo[4,5-b]pyrazines from 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanopyrazine with 2-aminopyridines

Novel synthesis of the title compounds by the facile cyclization between 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanopyrazine and various 2-aminopyridines under relatively mild conditions is described. The reactivity depended on the basicity of 2-aminopyridines.     

Efficient photochemical oxetane formation from 1-methyl-2,4,5-triphenylimidazole and benzophenones

In contrast to simple imidazoles, 1-methy1–2,4,5-triphenylimidazole ($\text{1}$) produced stable oxetane photoadducts $\text{3b}$ - $\text{e}$ with good efficiency upon irradiation in the presence of benzophenone derivatives $\text{2b}$ - $\text{e}$ in acetonitrile solution. Irradiation in the solid-phase was also studied. The oxetanes $\text{3b}$ - $\text{e}$ readily underwent cycloreversion by acid catalysis or by heating.     

Selective separation of Am(III) from lanthanides(III) by solvent extraction with hydrophobic field of "superweak" anion

The weakly coordinating hydrophobic anion TFPB-, whose surface is covered with a hydrophobic field, gives rise to a selective separation of Am(III) from lanthanides(III) in their solvent extraction even with a hard-donor extractant that shows no selectivity for Am(III) in traditional solvent extraction.     

Dansyl-Modified γ-Cyclodextrin as a fluorescent sensor for molecular recognition

The crystal structure of thiamine iodide sesquihydrate has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods as a host-guest model for coenzyme-substrate interactions. The asymmetric unit contains two chemical units. Both the thiamine molecules A and B, which are crystallographically independent, assume the usualF conformation and have a disordered hydroxyethyl side chain. An iodide anion (or a water molecule) bridges the pyrimidine and thiazolium rings of molecule A (or B) by forming a hydrogen bond with the amino group and an electrostatic contact with the thiazolium ring to stabilize the molecular conformation. In the crystal the thiamine molecules self-associate to form a pipe-like polymeric structure, in which four thiamine hosts surround an iodide guest and hold it through C(2)-H...I hydrogen bonds and thiazolium...I electrostatic interactions. Crystal data: C₁₂H₁₇N₄OS⁺·I^– · 1.5 H₂O, monoclinic,P2₁/c, a=12.585(2), b=25.303(5), c=12.030(2) Å, =115.15(1)°,V=3468(1) ų,Z=8,D _c=1.606 g cm^–3,R=0.045 for 3328 observed reflections. Two-carbon ring expansion of cyclobutanone skeletons by nickel-catalyzed intermolecular alkyne insertion

The reaction of cyclobutanone with an alkyne in the presence of a nickel(0) catalyst formally achieves intermolecular alkyne insertion between the carbonyl carbon and the α-carbon of a cyclobutanone, providing a six-membered carbocyclic skeleton.     

Single molecular multianalyte sensor: jewel pendant ligand

[structure: see text] The jewel pendant ligand has multiple chromogenic units combined in a single molecule with the dyes linked to a semiselective binding site by three heteroatoms (O, N, S) having different HSAB characteristics, to indicate diverse response to individual transition metal ions. Using a single-molecular multianalyte sensor, multiple analytes could be determined with a minimal sensing system.     

Synthesis,structure, and magnetic properties of dinuclear cobalt(II) complexes with a new phenol-based dinucleating ligand with four hydroxyethyl chelating arms

A new end-off type acyclic ligand with four hydroxyethyl arms, 2,6-bis[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aminomethyl]-4-methylphenol [H(bhmp)], formed dinuclear cobalt(II) complexes [Co(2)(bhmp)(OAc)(2)]BPh(4) (1) and [Co(2)(bhmp)(OBz)(2)]BPh(4) (2). The complex 1.2.5CH(3)CN (C(50)H(62.5)BCo(2)N(4.5)O(9)) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with dimensions a = 25.424(5) A, b = 13.376(2) A, c = 29.913(6) A, beta = 105.930(3) degrees, and V = 9781(3) A(3) and with Z = 8. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a mu-phenoxo-bis(mu-acetato)dicobalt(II) core structure containing two octahedral cobalt(II) ions. Electronic spectra were investigated for 1 and 2 in the range 400-1800 nm, and the data were typical for the octahedral high-spin cobalt(II) complexes. Magnetic susceptibility was measured for 1 and 2 over the temperature range 4.5-300 K, and the data were analyzed well using our theoretical method. The best fitting parameters were kappa = 0.77, lambda = -116 cm(-1), Delta = 572 cm(-1), and J = -0.44 cm(-1) for complex 1 and kappa = 0.96, lambda = -93 cm(-1), Delta = 616 cm(-1), and J = -0.33 cm(-1) for complex 2.     

Antithrombogenicity of cultured endothelial cell-detached surface

To examine the antithrombogenicity of cultured endothelial cell-detached surface, a simple hybrid vascular model tube consisting of a glass tube and endothelial cells was constructed. To detach the endothelial cells from the inner surface of the model tube, a steady shear stress of 2 or 8 N m(-2) was imposed onto the surface of endothelial cell monolayer by means of a coaxial double cylinder rotational-type apparatus. Coagulation of blood in contact with the endothelial cell-detached surface was examined using a damped oscillation rheometer. Coagulation of whole blood in the cell-detached tube occurred at about 40 min, which was almost the same as that in the endothelial cell-coated tube. A few platelets without shape change adhered to the endothelial cell-detached surface. These data suggest that the endothelial cell-detached surface may exhibit antithrombogenic and anticoagulant surfaces. Biochemical analyses showed that the glass surface, where endothelial cell was detached, was covered with components such as collagen type IV that is considered to be produced from the endothelial cells on the glass surface.
