Electron tomography of Nafion ionomer coated on Pt/carbon black in high utilization electrode for PEFCs

To confirm the superiority of newly developed electrocatalyst layer (ECL) for polymer electrolyte fuel cells, three-dimensional dispersion states of Nafion ionomer in Pt/carbon black agglomerates were analyzed by electron tomography based on multiple TEM images taken at different tilt angles. Uniform distribution of the ionomer has been first observed, proving the high catalyst utilization in the new ECL distinctive from that of the conventional one.     

Two convergent routes to the left-wing fragment of ciguatoxin CTX3C using O,S-acetals as key intermediates

Ciguatoxins, principal causative toxins of ciguatera seafood poisoning, are large ladderlike polycyclic ethers. Here, we report two convergent routes to synthesis of the multiolefinic left half of ciguatoxins based on a newly developed acyl radical strategy. Remarkably, only 13 steps from the monocyclic E-ring were required to construct the left wing. [reaction: see text]     

Full-color photochromism of a fused dithienylethene trimer

A diarylethene fused trimer, 1-(5-(2-(3,5-dimethyl-2-thienyl)hexafluorocyclopententen-1-yl)-2,4-dimethyl-3-thienyl)-2-(5-(2-(2,4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)hexafluorocyclopentene-1-yl)-2,4-dimethyl-3-thienyl)hexafluorocyclopentene, was synthesized. The diarylethene derivative showed full-color photochromic performance by choosing appropriate wavelength of light.     

Chemical reactivities of the cation and anion of M@C82 (M = Y, La, and Ce)

The chemical reduction and oxidation of M@C82 (M = Y, La, and Ce) afford the corresponding anion and cation, respectively, which show unique and interesting chemical reactivities. It is found that the successful reversible gain or loss of electrons by ionization is useful for controlling the stability and reactivity of M@C82 toward both nucleophiles and electrophiles.     

Synthesis of [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (BTBT) and its higher homologs through palladium-catalyzed intramolecular decarboxylative arylation

We report herein an effective method for the construction of 4- and 7-ring benzo-fused thieno[3,2-b]thiophenes, involving palladium-catalyzed intramolecular decarboxylative arylation as the key step.     

Scanning tunneling microscopy observation of initial growth of Sn and Ge1−xSnx layers on Ge(0 0 1) substrates

We have investigated the initial growth of Sn and Ge_1−xSn_x layers on Ge(0 0 1) surface by using scanning tunneling microscopy. After the growth of a 0.035 ML-thick Sn layer at room temperature, Sn clusters lining vertically to a dimer row was observed. In the case of the 0.035-0.018 ML-thick Sn growth at 250 °C, the characteristic surface reconstruction with the step-edge undulation like a comb was observed. In the growth of a Ge_0.994Sn_0.006 layer at 250 °C, the multilayer polynuclear growth with a lot of two-dimensional small domain was observed. These surface reconstructions should be accounted for by the large compressive stress induced in the surface layer due to the incorporation of Sn atoms.     

Thermogravimetry of the products in an imbalance condensation of an aromatic diamine and dichloride

Imbalance condensation of diaminophenylbenzimidazole, DAPBI, with terephthaloyl chloride, TPC was conducted for the purpose of synthesis of macromonomers, expected to be used in syntheses of aromatic polyamides with structural regularities. The products are soluble in dimethylsulfoxide—d6, and their 1H NMR spectra indicate that all the products are carboxyl-terminated. The signal of carboxyphenyl linked to chain ends is different from that of terephthaloyl in the 1H NMR spectra. By use of the ratio of the signal intensity of the former to that of the latter, the number-average degree of polymerization, DP _NMR is determined. With the mole ratio in feed, DP _NMR of the product increases. The TG thermograms of the products are a multistage one. Each stage is classified by temperature and mass loss at an inflection point. Mass loss of each stage classified by temperature at an inflection point corresponds to mass fraction of an aromatic amide with a characteristic degree of polymerization, DP, and that is, the DP distribution of the products is roughly estimated from the TG thermograms. The DP distribution of macromonomers influences performance of aromatic polyamides with structural regularities, derived from the macromonomers. The convenient estimation method of DP distribution by TG is useful in industries of high-performance polymers. To the knowledge, such convenient technique has never reported.     

Annealing behavior of a void network in amorphous silicon

A void network in a-Si films prepared by vacuum deposition was studied. A close relationship in annealing behavior has been observed between the changes in surface area of voids and in the ESR signal strength.     

Kinetic study of radical polymerization of dialkyl fumarates using electron spin resonance spectroscopy

The radical polymerization of dialkyl fumarates (DRF) bearing various ester alkyl groups was kinetically studied. The propagation and termination rate constants were determined using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The introduction of the bulky ester alkyl groups such as a tert-butyl group decreased the termination rate constant as expected. However, it has also been revealed that the bulky groups promote propagation despite the steric repulsion. The propagation rate and mechanism are discussed in relation to the propagation manner, i.e., tacticity of the polymer. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
