Diagonal F-Thresholds on Binomial Hypersurfaces

In this article, we study the diagonal F-threshold, that is, the F-threshold of the maximal ideal with respect to the maximal ideal itself. In particular, we give a formula of the diagonal F-thresholds for binomial hypersurfaces, and compare the diagonal F-thresholds with F-pure thresholds for strongly F-regular binomial hypersurfaces.

As a result, we prove that those diagonal F-thresholds always exist and they are rational numbers in that case.

Temporal formation of optical anisotropy and surface relief during polarization holographic recording in polymethylmethacrylate with azobenzene side groups

The formation of polarization holographic gratings with both optical anisotropy and surface relief (SR) deformation was studied for polymethylmethacrylate with azobenzene side groups. Temporal contributions of isotropic and anisotropic phase gratings were simultaneously determined by observing transitional intensity and polarization states of the diffraction beams and characterizing by means of Jones calculus. To clarify the mechanism of SR deformation, cross sections of SR were characterized based on the optical gradient force model; experimental observations were in good agreement with the theoretical expectation. We clarified that the anisotropic phase change originating in the reorientation of the azobenzene side groups was induced immediately at the beginning of the holographic recording, while the response time of the isotropic phase change originating in the molecular migration due to the optical gradient force was relatively slow.     

Realization of the Open-Boundary Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process on a Ring

We propose a misanthrope process, defined on a ring, which realizes the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process with open boundaries. In the misanthrope process, particles have no exclusion interaction in contrast to those in the simple exclusion process, while the hop rates depend on both numbers of particles at departure and arrival sites. Arranging the hop rates, we can recover the simple exclusion property and moreover have condensation if the number of particles exceeds that of sites. One condensate grows at an arbitrary single site and then behaves as an external reservoir providing and absorbing particles. It is known that, under some condition, the misanthrope process has an exact solution for the steady-state probability distribution. We exploit this to investigate the present model in an analytical manner.     

Ecologically valid defocus blur contributes to avoidance of interocular suppression in half-occluded zones

In this study, the effect of defocus blur on the avoidance of interocular suppression in half-occluded zones, which are the monocular zones formed by occlusion, was examined. Six human adults observed a pair of colored random-dot stereograms, and the cumulative time of disappearance of the half-occluded zones was measured. There were three defocus blur conditions (blurry-background, blurry-occluder, and nonblur) and two fixation conditions (fixation-front and fixation-back). The author found that the cumulative time of disappearance was shorter under the blurrybackground condition of the fixation-front condition and under the blurry-occluder condition of the fixation-back condition than under the other conditions. These results indicate that ecologically valid defocus blur contributes to the avoidance of interocular suppression in the half-occluded zones.
