Non-destructive analysis of the two subspecies of African elephants, mammoth, hippopotamus, and sperm whale ivories by visible and short-wave near infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics

Visible (VIS) and short-wave near infrared (SW-NIR) spectroscopy was used for non-destructive analysis of ivories. VIS-SW-NIR (500-1000 nm) spectra were measured in situ for five kinds of ivories, that is two subspecies of African elephants, mammoth, hippopotamus, and sperm whale. Chemometrics analyses were carried out for the spectral data from 500 to 1000 nm region. The five kinds of ivories were clearly discriminated from each other on the scores plot of two principal components (PCs) obtained by principal component analysis (PCA). It was noteworthy that the ivories of the two subspecies of African elephants were discriminated by the scores of PC 1. The loadings plot for PC 1 showed that the discrimination relies on the intensity changes in bands due to collagenous proteins and water interacting with proteins. It was found that the scores plot of PC 2 is useful to distinguish between the ivories of the two subspecies of African elephants and the other ivories. We also developed a calibration model that predicted the specific gravity of five kinds of ivories from their VIS-SW-NIR spectral data using partial least squares (PLS)-1 regression. The correlation coefficient and root mean square error of cross validation (RMSECV) of this model were 0.960 and 0.037, respectively.     

Four guaianolides from Sinodielsia yunnanensis

Four new guaianolides, sinodielides A-D (1-4), were isolated from Sinodielsia yunnanensis WOLFF together with a known polyacetylene, falcarindiol, and two known coumarins, bergapten and scopoletin. Their structures were established by spectral and X-ray analyses.     

Glochidionionosides A-D: megastigmane glucosides from leaves of Glochidion zeylanicum (Gaertn.) A. Juss

Five megastigmane glucosides were isolated from the leaves of Glochidion zeylanicum. One of them was a known compound, blumenol C O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), and the structures of the four new compounds, glochidionionosides A-D (2-5), were mainly elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including a modified Mosher's method. The absolute configurations of the six-membered ring of glochidionionoside D (5) were deduced by beta-D-glucopyranosylation-induced shift trends in the (13)C-NMR spectra and confirmed by X-ray analysis as its p-bromobenzoate (5b), and the axis chirality of C-7 was determined to be R.     

Adsorption and structure of methyl mercaptoacetate on Cu(1 1 1) surface by XPS and NEXAFS spectroscopy

Methyl mercaptoacetate (MA) on Cu(1 1 1) surface was investigated using synchrotron radiation-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. MA adsorbs on the surface via thiolate formation and weak interaction of the carbonyl group with the surface. Two different adsorption states previously reported for methanethiolate and ethanethiolate were confirmed, besides atomic sulfur. NEXAFS measurements support gauche-type conformation of MA whose skeleton lies on the surface.     

Improvement of pharmaceutical potential of all-trans retinoic acid with hydroxypropyl-��-cyclodextrin

2-Hydroxypropyl-??-cyclodextrin (HP-??-CyD) includes all-trans retinoic acid (RA), covering the double-bond area of RA with substituted hydroxypropyl groups on CyD ring, as proved by the nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) between methylene protons on the hydroxypropyl groups and the proton on RA. The formation of an inclusion complex results in hydrophilicity and stability. The effect of RA/HP-??-CyD and that of RA without HP-??-CyD on wrinkle scores and skin elasticity during skin treatment were identical, and the cutaneous stimulus was reduced comparing with RA. The results indicated that the RA/HP-??-CyD complex should help to realize new approaches in skin rejuvenation therapy.     

Addition of dihalocarbenes to 3H-1,5-benzodiazepines. Synthesis of 2H-bisazirino[1,2-a:2′,1′-d][1,5]benzodiazepines

Addition of dihalocarbenes, generated from haloforms using a phase transfer catalyst, to 3H-1,5-benzodi-azepines gave 2H-Bisazirino[1,2-a:2′,1′-d][1,5]benzodiazepines, a new ring system.     

Characterization and quantification of fluoxymesterone metabolite in horse urine by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry

Fluoxymesterone, an anabolic steroid with the 17alpha-methyl,17beta-hydroxy group, has been developed as an oral formulation for therapeutic purposes. However, it is also used illegally in racehorses to enhance racing performance. In this study, we detected 9alpha-fluoro-17,17-dimethyl-18-norandrostane-4,13-dien-11beta-ol-3-one by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), which has not been reported as a fluoxymesterone metabolite so far in horse. It was synthesized for use as a reference standard, and characterized on the basis of (1)H NMR and (13)C NMR spectra, as well as GC/MS EI mass spectra of TMS derivatives. It was excreted as the main metabolite in horse urine, and its reference standard could be synthesized easily. Therefore, this metabolite could be a useful target for a doping test of fluoxymesterone in racehorses.     

Coarse Metal Powder-Assisted pulsed CO2 Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy for the Direct Determination of Heavy Metals in Soil

A novel method of laser-induced plasma spectroscopy utilizing a pulsed transversely excited atmospheric CO₂ laser has been developed for the high-sensitivity determination of heavy metals in soil. A coarse metal powder was used to trap the soil and to assist with plasma generation. When the CO₂ laser (10.6?µm, 1.5?J, 200?ns) was irradiated on the metal and soil powder, a high-temperature and long-lifetime luminous plasma was induced. Fine particles of soil were dissociated and were excited in the plasma region. The method was used for the rapid determination of Cr, Pb, and Hg in loam. The limits of detection for Cr, Pb, and Hg were approximately 0.8, 15, and 0.7?mg/kg, respectively.
